PPCLI Fonds 24 Berkeley Albert James Franklin fonds . – 1888-2015 (predominant 1945-2002). – 2.5 m of textual records and other material. SK10560 Berkeley Albert James Franklin, known as “Bark”, “BAJ”, or “Badge”, was born 19 February 1927 at Drumheller, Alberta. He enlisted for the Pacific Force and joined the 2 nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in 1945 at Currie Barracks, Calgary. He was detailed to the PPCLI Regimental Police at Camp Shilo, Manitoba and at Currie Barracks in 1946 and 1947. He participated in Exercise Haines in the Yukon in February-March 1947 and was a member of the Special Air Service Company in 1948. He participated in Exercise Eagle in 1949. He served with both the 1 st and 3 rd Battalions of PPCLI as a Platoon Sergeant in Korea, 1952-1953. Later promoted to Staff Sergeant, he served with the First Battalion, D Company as Battalion Orderly Sergeant in Fort MacLeod, Germany, 1955-1957. He retired as a Master Warrant Officer in 1970 and resided in Calgary until his death on 13 April 2003. In his retirement he was active with the PPCLI Association and the Korea Veterans Association of Canada. He was a volunteer with the PPCLI Museum, an advocate for the rights of veterans, and author of self- published books and pamphlets on military history and political issues. He was married to Enid Marion Franklin, 1928-2014, and had two children, Marilyn and Gordon. The fonds contains some of BAJ Franklin's personal and family papers, subject files, manuscripts, newsletters, self-published pamphlets, files on individual Korean War veterans, scrapbooks, visual material, and military manuals compiled or collected by BAJ Franklin including photographs, nominal rolls, personal accounts, and news articles covering many diverse topics such as the Korean War, Korean Voluntary Service Medal, the First Canadian Parachute Battalion, Special Air Service Company, parachute training, training exercises, military discipline and dress, troopings and parades, the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Band, arms training, turbans, women in combat, base closures, and training accidents. Berkeley Albert James Franklin fonds . – 1888-2015 (predominant 1945-2002). – 2.5 m of textual records and other material.

SK10560 Berkeley Albert James Franklin, known as “Bark”, “BAJ”, or “Badge”, was born 19 February 1927 at Drumheller, Alberta. Series 2 Research files. – [ca. 1910]-2005. – 64 cm of textual records and other material. – This series consists of files of information and pictures which BAJ Franklin kept for his own reference purposes, as well as files he contributed to as a volunteer with the PPCLI Archives . – The files have been arranged alphabetically by subject.

Series 3 Files on individuals. – [ca. 1995]-2003. – 9 cm of textual records and other material. – This series consists of files on BAJ Franklin’s old PPCLI comrades. Many of the files include portraits and citations for medals won. – Arranged alphabetically.

Series 4 BAJ’s booklets. – 1984-[ca. 2001]. – 26 cm of textual records and other material. – 1 poster. – This series consists of pamphlets which BAJ Franklin created for distribution to his friends and to the PPCLI Archives. The pamphlets were reproduced in small quantities using a photocopier, and often consist of reproductions from published sources with his handwritten commentaries. Includes some files of news clippings. Subject matter includes military history, his own military experiences, and contemporary military controversies. – Metal fasteners have been removed for conservation reasons. – Arranged alphabetically by title.

Series 5 Scrapbooks. – 1950-[ca. 2002] – 32 cm of textual records and other material. – This series, like series 4, consists of visual and textual material compiled from various sources and reproduced using a photocopier. The works were larger in volume, often requiring three-ring binders, and were intended to be permanent commemorations of Franklin’s military experiences and advocacy. The Airborne Bridge, in two editions, was considered to be a published book. – Most binders and fasteners have been removed for conservation reasons. – Arranged alphabetically by title.

Series 6 Photographs. – [ca. 1888]-2000. – ca. 1687 photographs. – This series consists predominantly of photographs created or collected by BAJ Franklin, documenting his military career, particularly his experiences training as a paratrooper in the late 1940s. – Arranged in accession number order.

Series 7 Manuals, aides-mémoire, précis. – 1914-1967. – 85 cm of textual records. – This series consists of books, pamphlets, and brochures containing standing orders, instructions, and information for personnel serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. Most of these materials were used by BAJ Franklin in the performance of his duties, and a few were collected by him. – The series is organized into subseries: ( 7a) PPCLI and other units in which BAJ served, in chronological order; (7b) the Canadian Army, including manuals produced by the British Army but reissued by the Canadian Army; and (7c) manuals produced by other governments and agencies.

Series 8 Collected records of other service personnel. – 1940-1948. – 10 cm of textual records. – This series consists of a flight log and handbook used by Pilot Officer N.R. Fraser, 1943-1946; classroom notes of BAJ Franklin’s colleague Pte Leslie A. White while training in
