PPCA Licensor Profile In addition to licensing sound recordings on behalf of all major and multinational record companies in Australia (including Sony BMG, EMI, Warners and Universal), PPCA also licenses the catalogues of hundreds of independent and smaller record labels. These labels cater to a vast range of music tastes from rock, pop and country to metal, electronica, religious, reggae, indigenous rock, funk and experimental music. To illustrate the wide variety of music covered by a PPCA licence, each edition of In the Loop features a profile of one of our many Licensors and its catalogue which is licensed by PPCA. They are especially soulful, melodic and easy listening, so these tend to be very popular with restaurants, cafes, hotels and some of the more elegant bars and lounges. 4. Original Works - Rod Tamlyn, Managing Director

1. What kind of music does Original Works release?

Original Works’ main focus is adult contemporary with a bias towards the niche instrumental markets. We like working with artists that display high levels of expression and virtuosic ability.

In addition, we create music for strategic brand and positioning campaigns for large businesses which they can then release into any commercial avenue they choose.

2. What are some of your key releases to date?

Our key releases include albums by Tommy Emmanuel titled Only and the double live album Live One. The depth of expression, technical ability and dynamics of these recordings capture the magic of Tommy’s solo guitar like no other. Tommy is a musician who will be talked about and admired long into the future.

3. What type of business could play your music?

These releases contain a wide variety of solo guitar works. Only showcases original pieces by Tommy, and Live One is the ultimate collection of acoustic guitar arrangements of well known tunes by Peter Allen, The Beatles and some of Tommy’s older hits. My personal favourites are the ballads. They are especially soulful, melodic and easy listening, so these tend to be very popular with restaurants, cafes, hotels and some of the more elegant bars and lounges.

4. Do you have any exciting releases or events coming up?

Soon to be released for the Australian market is an album by Tommy Emmanuel and Jim Nicols entitled Happy Hour. It is two of the world’s best players having fun with some great jazz standards in a tribute to their mentor and friend - the legendary Chet Atkins. The spontaneity and musical vocabulary is simply stunning – this will be one for jazz guitar enthusiasts.

Original Works has several other projects currently in production at the moment, so stay tuned.

Every year PPCA compiles the Top 100 Most Broadcast Recordings and the Top 100 Most Broadcast Artists. For 2007, US superstar P!nk dominated both categories, taking top honours as the most broadcast artist and most broadcast song with U + Ur Hand. Australia’s own Eskimo Joe, Silverchair, Rogue Traders, Pete Murray and Evermore join big international acts such as Justin Timberlake and Scissor Sisters to round out the top 20 most broadcast recordings.

In compiling the Most Broadcast Artists for 2007, six Australian acts broke the top 20 while an additional ten made the top 50 for 2007. For a full run down of the top 100 please visit the licensing tab at www.ppca.com.au

FAQIs there any legal requirement for me to pay PPCA licence fees?

It is illegal to play protected sound recordings for commercial purposes without a licence. The Copyright Act imposes an obligation on those who wish to broadcast, communicate or publicly perform protected sound recordings and music videos to obtain the licence of the copyright holders. PPCA is authorised by participating record labels to grant these licences and to collect licence fees. If you don’t obtain a licence from PPCA, you will need to obtain a licence from each relevant individual copyright owner. For further information, see The Legal Position on our web site at www.ppca.com.au/legal_position.htm

Log on for your Licence Paying for your licence is easy with PPCA’s new online credit card payment option. Simply visit us at www.ppca.com.au and click on the ‘New licensing payment gateway’ button. Make sure you have your invoice and your licence number handy, then simply follow the prompts.

Through the web site you can now also update your PPCA licence details. If your use of recorded music or music videos has changed or if you have recently taken over a business – simply go to www.ppca.com.au and click on the ‘New online licence application’ button and follow the instructions outlined.

Applying for a PPCA licence or changing your current licence details has never been easier. In addition to using the online licence application form, you can also choose to fill out a printed licence form or contact our licensing department to arrange your PPCA licence.

Note your NumberPPCA wants to remind all licensees to quote your licence number when making all payments, especially via electronic funds transfer (EFT). Without a licence number we may not be able to correctly identify who has made the payment which will substantially delay crediting the funds against your account.

New billing arrangements for NightclubsNightclub owners please take note: following implementation of the new nightclub tariff, PPCA has made a change to its billing processes. PPCA is now issuing monthly invoices to nightclub licensees. If you would prefer to remain on an annual billing cycle, please contact the licensing department at (02) 8569 1111 or [email protected].

The Most Broadcast results are taken from the extensive play list and broadcast data collated by PPCA to distribute net licence income to Licensors, Artists and to the PPCA Performers’ Trust foundation. The charts are measured by collating all the recordings that appear in the PPCA radio/TV broadcast logs during the period from July to June each year. Australian artists appear in bold.
