The lake used to be a paradise for both residents and water birds. But

today, it is filling with rubbish and other kinds of waste. Previous, the

sight of many egrets painted the trees. Hundreds from flamingos perched

in the water in search of fish. A neighbourhood was surrounded by

greenery. The lake were even perfect for canoeing. Eagles could be seen

swooping up to catch fish. However, this all began to change about three

years ago. Fewer water birds visited the lake as time go by. Dead fish

began to float behind the surface of the water. The lake used to be very

deep, but now people can easily cross her on foot. The water is now a

murky shade of green. The water birds has stopped coming because their

habitat have been destroyed. Residents in the neighbourhood are

definitely upset about the dismal state of the lake because of water

pollution. The lake is no longer a pleasant place to be.

Petronas StreetSmart : Lessons for Life, is an interactive travelling exhibition promotes the importance of road safety. It features interactive programmes and activities that provide information on road safety. It aims to promote road safety awareness and inculcate responsible road safety habits among Malaysians.

Pupil A. Mukhis, 12, found the exhibition informative and interesting. He was shocked to know the impact on the human skull if one does not wear a helmet.

The exhibition was an unconventional approach to increase road safety awareness among children. Instead of parents educating their children, it is the children who, after visiting the exhibition, will tell their parents the importance of road safety. They will learn and explain the scientific concepts behind road safety to their parents.

The exhibition was first set up in 2001. Over the past 14 years, it has reached more than 1.4million Malaysians in almost every state in Malaysia. Facilitators also visit schools and communities to run workshops and activities.

The exhibition is located at Petrosains, The Discovery Centre, KLCC from

Priyanka and her family spent the school holidays at a Malay village in Kedah. They joined a homestay programme together with a few other families. When they arrived, they were given a warm welcome. A few men played the kompang, a traditional Malay drum while several young boys put on a silat performance. Silat is a traditional Malay martial art.

Then, the guests met their respective host families. They were invited to have lunch by the river. They tried some Kedahan dishes such as kerabu, gulai masak pedas and laksa Kedah. After such a hearty lunch, they went to their foster family’s home to rest.

The following day, Priyanka woke up early. She went outside and saw some of the villagers in their boats by the river. She hoped she would be able to try that. After breakfast, the family were taught how to weave mats and baskets out of mengkuang leaves.

At 11.30 a.m., Priyanka and the other families went to a paddy field. There, she saw a boy catching fish. He invited them to join him. With so many people in the paddy field, it soon became a muddy mess. Priyanka learnt how to use a fish trap and caught two fish.

After a long bath, Priyanka and her family had dinner. The fish that was caught earlier was grilled and served. As the families ate, they were entertained by a wayang kulit shadow theatre performance. Although Priyanka was very tired, she fixed her gaze on the performance.
