11 - 14/11 St. Lazarus Film Shorts Hit Silver Screen

Four locally produced films are to be shown this month in the emerging arts hub of St. Lazarus, complete with locally created scores and songs. While the plot of each film unfolds against the backdrop of the St. Lazarus Church District, the co-star will inevitably be the rustic, cultural atmosphere and social patina of this old part of the city.

The winding 6.2km Guia track that snakes through the peninsula of Macau - and narrows to just 7m at one point - must be one of the most challenging street circuits anywhere, a fact not lost on car racing enthusiasts Carlos Silva and Fernando Pinto when they lined up against 13 other competitors in the first official Macau Grand Prix on 30th October 1954. Some 20,000 spectators turned up to cheer them along the Macau waterfront, and the rest, as they say, is history. Their exploits, the cars they raced and the rides of succeeding racing generations can all be found in the Macau Grand Prix Museum, admission free, along with a simulator if you think you have what it takes!

This month, the territory hosts the 59th Macau Grand Prix - which showcases the 30th outing of the Formula 3 championship - over four action-packed days that pits some of the best racers in the world against each other in F3, World Touring Car Championship, GT’s, and superbikes. Records have tumbled like dominos over recent years, and expectations are high that the drama, not to mention the nurturing of future F1 World Champions, will continue this month. Ayrton Senna, Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen, Jacques Villaneuve, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel - plus a host of other household names - all cut their teeth on the dogleg streets of Macau. In fact, 17 of this year’s 24 registered F1 drivers earned their stripes in the Macau Grand Prix over the years, so when it comes to pedigree there’s not much to compare.

Inevitably, with better suspension, faster engines and improved safety equipment, the envelope gets pushed out further and further so it’s appropriate to mention the painstaking work undertaken by the supporting cast (of hundreds) of the pit, paddock and paddle marshals, the rescue and extraction team doctors and firemen, the scrutineers and observers, without whom the races just couldn’t happen. Some 13 training modules, beginning in March, were organized for this year’s grand prix, which speaks for itself in terms of matching speed with safety.

But come race day, with engines racing, and hand or foot on clutch waiting for the green light, there will only be one thought in the minds of the competitors: get to the first bend first and don’t look back until podium time. For spectators, race weekend will be the icing on the cake in a month in which the city hosts the Macau Food Festival, a fireworks display, car and bike shows, Grand Prix photo exhibitions - and the Grand Prix Carnival, a mega party held over race weekend for visitors who want to experience the whole buzz of this incredible time of the year!

Grand Prix Museum & Wine Museum

The Grand Prix Museum displays legendary racing cars and motorcycles that have put the famous Guia street circuit squarely on the world map. Why not strap yourself into the simulator for a couple of hair-raising laps!

Next door, the Wine Museum presents a comprehensive education of viniculture, with the emphasis on Portuguese wine-producing regions as well as references to winemaking in China. Visitors can also taste the wine (MOP10/per glass or MOP15/three glasses per person). Both museums offer an ‘on-site only’ Audio Guide Service.
