Dear Parents, Happy Holidays! We are at the end of term 1, our students and staff are looking forward to winter vacation. Rightfully so, as term 1 has been a very busy, but rewarding experience for all of us.

KG students of Diyar have enjoyed a huge range of extracurricular activities in the last two weeks of November, culminating in the celebration of the UAE’s 46th National Day. UAE flag recognition day, Arabic week / Arabic Day, and National Day celebration. I would like to humbly thank, the KG parents for being so kind and sending so many projects, goodies, food (the list is endless), to share with the staff and students. We really appreciate your great generosity and compassion. As ‘Healthy Eating’ continues to be a drive at Diyar our students were engaged in physical activities and learned how to adopt healthy eating habits during our healthy eating week and picnic. One such habit is the importance of a nutritious breakfast, prior to starting school each day and we encourage all students to begin he day in the right way by adopting such habits. These habits link to one of our core values- responsibility. Being responsible for our health and well-being has dramatic effects on our performance in a range of areas including our academic achievement. Thank you for taking the time to come and meet your child’s teacher. I know for sure that there have been some very productive and fruitful conversations in the interest of our children. As we near the end of first term, and what an eventful term this has been. As I walk around the classrooms and observe the children it is so nice to see active learning taking place. All the while the children are developing qualities with which they will approach every future challenge: autonomy, creative thinking, and satisfaction in a job well done.

Recently our children also explored the traditional Emirati House Museum as a field trip and enjoyed learning about the history of Emirati culture and heritage. This year H.H Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched the UAE National Agenda, education is one of the sectors which falls into this agenda, 2 of these objectives are as follows; Attending Pre-Primary; -To ensure that 95% of children in UAE attend pre-primary education. High Quality teachers: - To ensure that 100% of schools have high- quality teachers. Consistency in school attendance reflects well in the progress of your Child’s education. We have on-going training sessions throughout the year with all our teachers to maintain and moderate best teaching practices so the children get the best education. “The greatest gifts we can give our children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.” Maria Montessori.

GRADE 1 We are so proud to inform you that our brilliant little grade one students have grown in many areas. English was exciting because it could foster students' enthusiasm toward reading distinct types of stories. Our focus during November was about occupations and jobs in the community. Students had a great chance to learn and discover the jobs that we have in our community.

GRADE 2 Grade 2’s did a wonderful job showcasing their creativity this month. We made sock puppets for the English project. Children had fun creating various characters and used these characters to present their couplets. It was a fun filled learning experience!

GRADE 3 November was an exciting month full of fun activities and events for our grade 3’s. From creating our own frog and butterfly life cycle to acting out different stories in English. We even built our own creatures and presented it in front of the class. We celebrated Arabic week where we did lots of interactive activities. Grade 3’ also hosted the assembly. Flag Day was a huge success. Dressing up in flag colors lifted our spirits and we felt proud to be citizens of the UAE. We are looking forward to the last stretch towards the end of the term. We will most definitely end on a high note.

GRADE 4 Grade 4 has accomplished quite a lot in learning different strategies, concluding our unit on weather, natural disasters, thunder and lightning. It was interesting to have experienced some rain, thunder and lightning in parts of Fujairah. This gave students a sense of understanding and excitement to know what happens in the process of thunder and lightning. We have been working on ecosystems, and are very excited to continue with the projects in the coming month. Writing about ecosystems gave students a clearer perspective of concepts and factual understanding.

GRADE 5 The month of November was filled with excitement and intrigue. Our super students were exceptionally innovative using technology to portray their heroes by means of a Power Point which they learned in IT.

GRADE 6 For the month of November, it was all about the UAE. With the approach of Flag Day and National Day, students were assigned to write descriptive pieces about their country. They used sensory details and figurative language which helped them produce their most innovative and creative writing piece yet.

GRADE 7 Grade 7’s had an amazing time putting together the front page of their newspaper with a first-person point of view, an introduction to the principal and an article about Flag day. They customized and designed their newspaper with great enthusiasm. In the process students learned writing and grammatical skills coupled with first person point of view. Students also led English lessons and enjoyed implementing KWL chart and Think-Pair-Share. This is a skill they will use for the rest of their life!

GRADE 8 Grade 8 students had fun doing research about a famous personality. They chose from: Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan, Sheikh Mohamad bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Albert Einstein. Students researched about their early life, adulthood, education, influences and challenges.

GRADE 9 Grade 9’s had a productive term researching and putting together an advertisement campaign and presentation. Students incorporated different written tasks relating to the unit theme “challenges that people face”. The term’s academic words, grammar and vocabulary was all taken in this unit’s tasks and students had a great time learning new constructive work. Writing was centered around 1st person narration whereby students wrote about first person point of view.

GRADE 10 Grade 10’s focused on the question, ‘How are growth and change related? ‘We looked at informational texts, novel extracts and short stories. Grammar practice included conditional sentences, restrictive and nonrestrictive clauses and related words. Compare and contrast, recognize sequence, scan and making inferences were the reading strategies used. The students worked diligently on their biography projects of Emirati poets which resulted in presentations of a high standard.

11GRADE Grade 11’s had fun learning about ‘What shapes our identity?’ Novel extracts and personal inventories were examples of texts studied to assist students in their understanding of their identity. Grammar work consisted of modals for ability, possibility and necessity verb usage. Students were enthusiastic about the projects on Emirati poets and worked with diligence in creating outstanding PowerPoint presentations. Grade 11’s must be highly commended on presenting with confidence gained through hard work and knowledge about their subjects. The presentations were done before Flag Day which made them feel even more connected to the rich culture of their country.

French lessons were centered around the body parts and animals for grade 4, 5 and 6’s. Students of grades 7 and 8 started reading short dialogues and learned new vocabulary.

Elementary Math Dear Parents, November has continued to be busy in Math with students learning new and challenging concepts and continuing to practice things learned earlier in the term. This month we have added the Mental Math Challenge to encourage and motivate students to learn their multiplication tables and to practice working out sums in their heads quickly. The first round is complete and each class has a team of four to represent their class. The cross grade competition will take place in the days leading up to the National Day celebration.

High School Math Dear Parents, November has been a challenging month for students studying high school math. We have picked up the pace a little over the course of the term and are now preparing for the end of term exams. There have been some extra support classes running both during break times and after school to help our students to achieve the grades they desire. The Mental Math Challenge first round has taken place and each class now has a team of four to represent them in the cross grade competition.

Elementary Science Dear Parents, science projects have been in full flow this month with students producing some amazing work. We have done a lot of cross curricula work in some grades, combining the things that we have taught in Math, Science and English in the projects this term. This has been very successful and will be rolled out to all grades for term 2 projects. The cross curricula approach allows students to see abstract concepts used in a real world concept, introduces even the grade ones to the idea of creative problem solving and innovation. There will be a mini expo of the best of each grade projects in the elementary hall on the 14th December, where one project from each class will be displayed and the children will be there to talk to you about their projects. There will be an invitation sent out for parents of grades 1-6 to come and see

the students amazing work.

High School Science Dear Parents, Biology, chemistry and physics were new to the students of grade 10 this term as they have done combined science in previous years. This has been a challenge to many but they have worked hard and are becoming more confident. The term started with an emphasis on health and Safety in the laboratories and all the students did some practical work designed to help them to understand some basic scientific practices and how to keep themselves and their peers safe in the laboratory environment. The students have worked had on their science projects and done some excellent presentations. Well done to the students who worked on entries for the F1 Challenge, some of them got through to the next round to be held at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi in December, we wish those students the very best of luck.

child’s behavior when there are clear and consistent consequences for breaking the rule. • Keep things positive! Reward and praise your child for following routines and rules. This makes will make it more likely that your child

will follow the routines and rules in the future at home and at school.

How much sleep should your child be getting?

According to research done on sleep, your child needs this number of hours to function properly: Did you know that 90% of teenagers report sleeping less than the

recommended hours? And if your child is not sleeping enough, this can lead to: • Mood changes • Weight gain • Inability to concentrate • Low academic performance • Weakened immune system • Lack of growth • And of course, being tired.

And because your children’s brains are a work-in progress until the age of 21, and because much of that work is done while your child is asleep, please make sure your child is getting the necessary amount of sleep. Your child will thank you for it.

Elementary IT Dear Parents, the students have been working very hard in IT and learning the theory component of their course. From January they will move onto the exciting project based part of the course where they will learn and practice lots of practical IT skills while enjoying the real world context of the work.

High School IT Dear Parents, the high school students have been working very hard with Ms. Marile on the first of their practical projects. Some of these are excellent, showing great skill and a lot of effort and time on the part of the students to create outstanding projects. We are looking forward to our new IT laboratory which will be open for students after the winter break.
