Recurrence/”Looping”
aka Rehashing/Rehearsing
When we experience trauma,
overwhelming emotion, or even every day
cognitive dissonance or identity
incongruence, our brain is designed to
focus in on the discrepancy, analyse and
reanalyse to try and resolve it. It loops
round and round “re-presenting” the
images, emotions, thoughts that occurred
as a result of the event and rehearses—
over and over and over again—trying to
find a way to reduce the dissonance or
incongruence. In this way, we cause our
own suffering.
IT IS NOT DOING; IT IS BEING
BEING-MODE DOING-MODE
Busyness vs. Mindfulness by Fr. Earnest E. Larkin Excessive "busyness" is lack of mindfulness. Busyness is a cultural demon of our time, an escape or excuse from the hard work of concentration and the duty one is trying to avoid. Busyness is a wolf in sheep's clothing, because it looks like virtue but actually is a whole array of self-interest clustered around pride or self-indulgence. It is an ego trip and the enemy of charity. Look more closely at its manifestations and you will find a driven and compulsive spirit that hurts one's health, peace of mind, and awareness of others. Over-busy persons are trying to prove themselves by the sheer quantity of their output. The more they do, the more they feed their self-satisfaction, basking in the imagined plaudits of the multitude. There is little charity in this addiction, appearances to the contrary notwithstanding. The motivation in busyness is ego-enhancement, the desire to impress, even to show up the neighbor. Busyness is ersatz zeal.

What is Mindfulness?
A “here and now” present state of mind Experiencing being, rather than doing Being present, in the moment, in my body, with all my senses Having a non-judgmental, accepting awareness-- maintaining openness to experience Being able to transcend my thinking and emotional states through an “observing self” (i.e. “meta cognition” or transcendence)
Sound Familiar?
• Related to Full Body Relaxation, breathing
awareness, stress reduction
• Meditation
• Centering Prayer; imaginal prayer
• Ecstatic experiences
• Imaginal Prayer
• Stillness
• Recollection; Remembering
• Contemplation; Contemplative Prayer
• Solitude
• Etc.,
Why practice Mindfulness?
To cope better with negative emotions; to tolerate
what feel like intolerable feelings
To practice thinking that is more realistic, more
helpful, and better for me (and to interrupt
automatic thought patterns)
To simply be (rather than automatic behavior
patterns; de-automatization); increased
attentional capacity
To master skills of being calm, relaxed, and
mindful; self-soothing (moderate stress=learning)
To express love, kindness and gentleness to my
self

Mind Status Exam
WHAT WE THINK
THE GRAND ILLUSION
I am a distinct individual
I am separate from other people
I am separate being from God/Higher Power
The world is simply my environment
THE GRAND ILLUSION
I exist at a point of time and space
I am physical matter and form
I have an “outer” life (behavior, persona, experience)
I have an “inner” life (cognitive, emotional)
I am (at least) three parts: body, soul, spirit

ONTOLOGY: TO BE
WHAT WE ARE
“Nous”
Between stimulus and response there is a
space. In that space is our power to
choose our response. In our response lies
our growth and our freedom.
Viktor E. Frankl
Dasein: the space
To be is to be there, to
be present, to be a
being
ONTOLOGY: Nous
noús (a masculine noun) – the native
capacity of each person to think (reason);
the mind; mental capacity to exercise
reflective thinking.

THE “TO BE” MODE
I am a connected to other human beings
I am in unity with all living things
I am spiritually and relationally one with
God/Higher Power (as I define)
The world is my ecology
THE “TO BE” MODE
Mind (soul-spirit) is not bound by space and
time
Mind is not brain
Being is “inner” and “outer” experience
My being is a whole

LEAVES DOWN A STREAM (adapted from Williams and Kraft, 2012)
Imagine your favorite river or stream. Be mindful of your thoughts. As a thought occurs, imagine it as riding on a leaf on a stream. The leaf is up stream. Picture yourself quietly, contently, watching from the shore, sitting at your favorite place along the bank. Describe the leaf—its size, color, shape, what kind it is. Allow the leaf to float slowly down the stream. Let the thought float on the leaf and let the leaf float down the stream. The thought on the leaf flows freely. There is nothing to block the free flow of the thought on the leaf in the stream. The leaf and the thought flows down stream and out of sight and out of mind. Next thought…..
