    Introduction:PowerPoint is a application used for the creation of presentations. These presentations are

    laid out in a "storyboard" type fashion, where individual slides are created and formatted with

    text and images. PowerPoint presentations are widely used in classrooms as note outlines for

    teachers, and for project presentations by students.

    The point of the slides in PowerPoint presentations is NOT to fit as much detailed

    information as you can onto a single slide. ather, each slide should contain elements that

    briefly sum up the major idea!s of what you will be presenting for the duration of the slide.

    The style in which you create slides is completely up to you. PowerPoint allows you to

    choose from a wide variety of formats that include sections such as titles, lists, images, or

    charts. #ny of these can be incorporated into your presentation. The main thing to $eep in

    mind, however, is that an audience will be viewing this material% it must be large enough to

    read, yet not so large that it ta$es up far too much of the screen to include relevant

    information.

    Opening PowerPoint:

    To begin running PowerPoint, go to the (tart menu, and navigate to "Programs." ) f younavigate to the Programs menu, and from there, navigate to the *icrosoft Office applications,

    you will see *icrosoft Office PowerPoint +- listed.

    About the Slides:

    On any given slide in a PowerPoint presentation, you can present your information in a

    variety of ways. ou can type in text using text boxes, insert images or sounds, create charts,

    graphs, or lists, and ma$e text columns. /ach separate element in a slide !be it text or an

    image is considered its own object, and can be moved and modified independently fromother objects in a slide. &e will get into the specifics of how to actually create these elements

    in a bit, but you should $now from the start that you are not limited when creating a

    slideshow.

    The Opening Screen:&hen you start PowerPoint, a number of screens and panels will appear on your screen. ou

    can go in a number of directions from here.

    #cross the top of the screen, you1ll notice a toolbar that loo$s similar to ones used in word

    processing program. These tools allow you to format and edit text and other elements in your

    slide. &e1ll get into more detail about this toolbar later on in the tutorial.

    On the left side of the screen, there1s a panel with two tabs called 2(lides3 and 2Outline3 this

    allows you to view all of your slides in your slideshow as small images !in the 2(lides3

    mode or as text !you can view as text if you clic$ on the 2Outline3 tab.

    The panel on the bottom has more tools for editing your slides, such as 4rawing and

    #uto(hapes.

    The Task Pane:The panel on the right side of the screen is actually called the 2Tas$ Pane.3 #s the name

    implies, it controls all the main slide control tas$s for your presentation.

    )f you ever lose sight of this panel, go to the menu bar in PowerPoint, navigate to 25iew,3

    select the 2Toolbars3 menu, and ma$e sure 2Tas$ Pane3 is selected.

    The other section of the 2(lide 4esign3 menu is the 2#nimation (chemes3 menu. &e will

    discuss this menu later on in our section about slide transitions and animations. Now, let1s

    learn how to insert objects and text into our newly designed slides.

    Inserting Ob6ects:)n your slide, you may wish to insert objects that may not already exist. ou will have to

    insert objects from scratch if you are ma$ing your slideshow from a blan$ presentation, or ifyou have used a pre7made layout and want to add in more objects. To add in a text box, an

    image, or some other element, then you have to use the ")nsert" menu on the menu bar to

    perform these functions.

    Insert Picture: 6o to the file menu and select )nsert GG Picture and choose from one of theoptions, depending on what type of picture you want to insert.

    Clipart: ";lipart" are images that already come pac$aged with your computer. Theseare generally simple images that can be very effective when used in PowerPoint

    presentation. ;lipart also functions as eye7candy for your slideshow to $eep things

    loo$ing interesting. 9se the ;lipart menus to navigate through different categories of

    images to find the pictures that best suit your needs.

    Inserting a "ist:

    :ists boxes are the same as any other text box. There are many ways you can create lists in

    text boxes in PowerPoint.

    The first way is to create a new slide and choose a slide from the pre7made layouts. ou can

    recogni?e a slide with a list object box by the bulleted list.

    #nother way to add a list is insert a new text box in a slide. Then, clic$ inside the box. 9sing

    the formatting toolbar, clic$ on the Numbering or Kullets button.

    To start ma$ing your list, simply clic$ your cursor next to the first bullet and type. To add a

    new item to the list, just hit the /nter $ey on your $eyboard to begin a new line.

    Insert )ordArt:

    )nserting a &ord#rt element rather than regularly formatting text can give a little extra flair.

    &ord#rt is essentially text effects. To bring up the &ord#rt 6allery, open up the &ord#rt

    toolbar by going to the menu bar and selecting 5iew GG Toolbars GG &ord#rt. # separate

    toolbar just for ma$ing &ord#rt will now appear.

    0. Insert )ordArt: &hen you clic$ on the ")nsert &ord#rt" icon, a &ord#rt 6allerywindow will appear offering various styles of &ord#rt to choose from. ;lic$ on a

    Text" window where you can type in the text for your &ord#rt image.

    Once the text box is active, you can type whatever you want there, as you would in a wordprocessor. &hen you are finished typing, clic$ outside of the text box to see how your text

    loo$s. ou can select the text box by clic$ing in the inside of it. &hen a text box is selected,

    you can edit the text inside or move the box around and reposition it on the slide.

    # text box !or any other object in PowerPoint is selected when you see the gray, bold outline

    going around the object, and when your cursor turns into a cross. ou can adjust the si?e of

    your text box by using your cursor to grab the "handles" that are placed around the border ofthe text box !they loo$ li$e the small white s'uares that are on each corner and on the sides of

    the selected text box. 4rag the handles to where you wish to position your text box.

    )f you want to change the loo$ of the text in your text box, then you must first select the text.

    ;lic$ inside of the text box, and then use your cursor to highlight all of the text you wish to

    modify. :et>s say you want to bold the text, change the font, and give the text a new color.

    ou can ma$e all of these changes using various tools for editing text in PowerPoint. The

    text boxes that may be leftover from a slide layout that you don>t want to use. To delete a text

    box, ma$e sure the text box is selected and then clic$ on the outside border of the box. Then,

    press the "Kac$space" or "4elete" buttons on your $eyboard. #lternatively, you can right7

    clic$ on the text box so that the sub7menu appears and then select ";ut."

    if you want, or you could simply clic$ an image and then clic$ the "O=" button to insert it

    into the image object box.

    Please note that when you change the appearance of an image in PowerPoint, you are not

    actually changing the original image file, so you don>t need to worry about changing a picture

    in PowerPoint, and then override the image you already have saved.

    )f you want to insert an image you have on your computer or a dis$, and don1t want to insert

    Once you have inserted an image, you can change various aspects of that image. s si?e.

    (electing the image brings up a new pop7up menu called "Picture." There you can modify the

    appearance of your image in a number of ways.

    ou don>t want to ma$e your slideshow longer than it has to be, and sometimes audiences can

    be annoyed by over7usage of these effects !for example, using a flying animation effect on

    every single word in a sentence.

    To $eep your slide show interesting, you may want to consider applying slide transitions to

    )n the dialogue box that appears, give your slide show a name !save the file with the

    extension ".html". PowerPoint will save your slide show as an CT*: document, with all of

    your slides as individual files saved in a folder !PowerPoint creates the folder automatically.

    To view your PowerPoint as a web page, use &indows /xplorer to browse to the saved

    PowerPoint .html document saved on your computer, and open it in &indows /xplorer. #

    web browser will open up with your slide show as a web page displayed.

    The actual slides will appear in the right frame of the screen. ou can navigate from slide to

    slide using the lin$s listed in the left frame of the screen.
