❖ Backstory - Welcome to a Malaysian factory that recently started producing Red Pill

Chicken merchandise - they have pillows, clocks, underwear - anything you can imagine, basically.

And this new merchandise is a real hit! Its a pill-shaped pillow, and its jointly promoted by METALLICA as a part of their revival tour “Enter Sandman - Morpheus Returns”

The economics point of view…❖ High demand, but the company keeps low costs❖ Low Wages for workers!

➢ Working hours were increased from 12 to 14Oh they ain’t happy….STRIKE STROKE

A- FIRE EM! Bring in new workers from other towns pshB- okay, okay, increase wages, and lower working hours.

Page 5: Powerpoint prototype

A - Fired them huh.Inundating negative media coverage!ATTACK on Red Pill Chicken and of course, Globalisation!‘Orang Hutans - Forest People’ (cough, crazy eco terrorists) campaign to push out factories - with their supportual facts being unknown chemicals causing new diseases blah blahA - Sue the Forest PeopleB - Acknowledge existence of sweatshops, establish commission monitoring conditions

Page 6: Powerpoint prototype

B - fair and square, shall we compromise? They produce less!Profits fall! and the headquarter isn’t too happy.

A- New CapitalB- Expand factories, and hire more people~

Page 7: Powerpoint prototype

A - SUED? Oh ho those orang-hutans are mad. Forest People start releasing evidence! All those workers choking of chemicals inside the factory! It’s so insanitary that even CHICKENs dont want their feet in this place!- Boycott of products worldwide happens~Of course, sales PLUMMET. tsk, sucks for you Movement grows in strength~ joined by religious sects…rise of “HEAL THE WORLD” - child labour protestA - Reduce price of products to stimulate demand and popularityB - Drop court case, and issue public apology.

Page 8: Powerpoint prototype

• B - Sigh, okay fine, ACKNOWLEDGE.

There are sweatshops, and some of what you say mayy…be..true…

Commission monitoring conditions and a factory code of conduct are enforced.

Page 9: Powerpoint prototype

A - Laser-precision machines, sacking those who are inefficient...new capital after all! no harsh feelings, right?Productivity DOES increase, BUT workers join rival with technical knowledge and expertise as revenge - DIARY QUEEN RELEASES NEW GAME “FAT COW RUN”

Consumers are happy, there’s MORE CHOICE, MONOPOLY - > OLIGOPOLY!! !! !! A - Collude with Dairy QueenB - Price discounts

Page 10: Powerpoint prototype

B - Expand factories and hire more people - worker education programme!

Workers are slightly more satisfied with higher productivity. Malaysia reaches higher GDP because there are more jobs, more wages, meaning more taxes and as a whole its a boom.

There are increase in exports, improved current account. Also an increase in exchange rate due to increased inward FDI - exports became more expensive.Theoretically demand should fall, but it is offset by Red Pill Chicken’s better ethical image and excitement for new movie - which is a sequel to award winning film Red Pill Chicken: The Movie.

Malaysia improves infrastructure such as highways, railways as a result of external economies of scale. There is also a rise of ancillary and commercial services. - Next

Page 11: Powerpoint prototype

A - Olright, drop in price it is. Keep in mind - demand for the merchandises were elastic!but Red Pill Chicken has a tarnished public image now oopsPeople now find anything related to Red Pill Chicken So the drop in price has pretty limited impact.

A group of kids decided to take things a step further - they produced a video of them launching Red Pill Chickenplushies into the seas and burning them at stakes.Oh, the power of media - quite a mass of people join in. Profits plunge. KFC headquarters is very, very not happy…

Demand for the game itself stays pretty inelastic - because its really addictive. eh. Its a source of shame now! And more people need rehabilitation clinics..and private ones. Increased demand for private rehabilitation clinics! (and perhaps Britney Spears albums too)- Next

Page 12: Powerpoint prototype

A – um, okay, surrender. Drop the court case.

A public apology is issued – and NGOs are all over the firm. Monitored here, monitored there, everything that could possibly be monitored is monitored.

Page 13: Powerpoint prototype

So, the thing is, quite frankly, KFC has had it. Its regular products – like the bucket that everyone loves to hog – is taking a grave decline too.

Oh deary us. What is KFC going to do?

A – Sell Red Pill Chicken

B – Withdraw from Malaysia

Page 14: Powerpoint prototype

A –

A mysterious tech firm purchases Red Pill Chicken for a small sum. KFC spends this sum rebuilding its image. Healthy Finger Licking Campaign is replaced with free chicken, and there is a slow increase in demand. Shift in customer demographics occur: Red Pill Chicken becomes part of an underground subculture, like a part of a teenage ritual! (Exciting, children?) Red Pill Chicken shops close, but merchandise rises in value on black market. It’s a part of hidden economy, and because that sounds so ‘spooky’, Red Pill Chicken

costumes are spotted during the next Halloween.

Page 15: Powerpoint prototype

B – Chickens are no true Asians. Unemployment soars, but workers are taken up in other factories. Frictional

unemployment is not that much of a biggie, you know. Those factory men move to electrical goods’ companies, and goodness, were they glad their skills were transferrable. Individual standards of living fall temporarily, but tax revenues don’t decrease by that much because well..workers didn’t

really make all that much to begin with.

Page 16: Powerpoint prototype

A - Colluding with the queen, yes- Higher prices for both firms - higher profits!Public doesnt suspect a cartel - they think the rising costs are due to improved conditions of workers! And now, they’re a little happier to buy the products - celebrities speak out in support!

A - Cheat on CartelB - Respect the agreement and stick with it

Page 17: Powerpoint prototype

B - Price WAR!- RPC is trying to squeeze out Dairy Queen before it actually becomes a major threat.

Profit drops for both firms, RPC expands market share while poor dairy queen cannot cope.

Page 18: Powerpoint prototype

A - Cheat on cartel- Having aggressively expanded into Dairy Queen’s territory, RPC released unsupported link between soft-serve ice-cream and epilepsy.-> Fat Cow Run sales plunge. Dairy Queen’s reputation suffers a massive hit RPC becomes a monopoly again Sale goes up, Profit goes up, Brand loyalty goes up = it is now the safe, trustworthy, fun, original option. Approved of human rights organisations~BARRIERS OF ENTRY IS EXTREMELY HIGH

NEXT

Page 19: Powerpoint prototype

B - boring, but safe? is it?Uhoh, the European commission found out. It restricts consumer choice, the barriers of entry became tooooo high - it broke the collusion law basically. So humongous fine it is. Consequently the government lowers legal barriers for new start-up tech firms and provides special scholarships for students in STEM majors. Followed with growth of small firms!

OVERALL, RPC still stands a multinational firm, still a dominant player - but in oligopoly form with lots of new threats.

NEXT

NEW CHALLENGE!

Increase the reach of the Red Pill Chicken!Grow Grow GROw GROW

A – Lateral Integration/diversificationB - Establish High-Quality Red Pill Chicken Schools in poorer regions

Page 21: Powerpoint prototype

A – I hear…a lot…of Chickens.

RPC buys a lot of domestic Chicken farms, and establishes Red Pill Chicken restaurants in poorer regions.

Unemployment in the poorer regions drop, incomes rise, standards of living rise - Since RPC’s goods are income elastic, their revenue soars too.

RPC becomes a status symbol: housewives aggressively fight for Red Pill Chicken organic produce, because apparently, according to this source that is totally not KFC, consumption of Chicken is linked to lower Cortisol levels.

Broader market, and I think I hear a lot of chachings too now.

WOOHOO!

Page 22: Powerpoint prototype

You’ve successfully resolved a strike in Malaysia, retained skilled workers, and expanded the reach of Red Pill Chicken - you talented director, you!

You get promoted to Chief Operation Officer. Red Pill Chicken 2 is also being promoted at the same time. The premier is in two weeks. You will be there.

Page 23: Powerpoint prototype

NEW CRISIS – Skilled workers are emigrating to countries with higher pay and better potential.

A – Build Career PathB –Acquire suppliers

Page 24: Powerpoint prototype

A – Build em’ the bridge to success!

The firm has allowed elites to move to Headquarters, and those elites are actually retained at higher motivation. With cross cultural perspectives too - R&D department flourishes.

Workers are also more motivated because now this is seen as a way out of productivity. Merchandise is produced at a faster rate, and supply is increased.

NEXT

Page 25: Powerpoint prototype

B – It’s a multinational giant, and nobody wants to mess with that…

The firm acquires suppliers to remove the profit margins enjoyed by polymer, cotton supplier firms; costs are reduced.

THEY CAN PAY THEIR WORKERS MORE!

Productivity increase!

NEXT

Page 26: Powerpoint prototype

Sadly, all good things must come to an end. Diseconomies of scale emerge – the ropes of bureaucracy tighten on RPC. Too much money is spent on hiring managers for quality control, internal regulation reinforcement and all that…

A – Improve working practicesB – Prune the company

Page 27: Powerpoint prototype

A – Could they work better?

Regions are allowed more autonomy – independent supeliers, marketing campaigns and such – there is a reduced need for centralised management.

There is productivity related pay, and team work increases.

Productivity increases, with increased intrinsic value – company’s loyalty escalates.

Product differentiation across regions – and profits rose rose

Page 28: Powerpoint prototype

B – Break it down, Break it up, whichever you’d like.

Branches of the company are paid off, and efficiency is raised.

GOVERNMENT purchases one of them – Voice Technology.
