Floating School ProgramThis program school is aimed at children from indigenous tribal ANAK SUKU DALAM
This tribe is an isolated tribe and its life is very dependent on the river The source of food, source of drinking water and shelter comes from the river forest destruction made their lives difficult
One of the village leaders realized that education is a way to improve welfare Through a dialogue with the company a floating school was created with 2 dedicated teachers at the school
The company also established settlements on the riverbanks that provide basic facilities. Initially only one family lived in that place. Other residents still live in the forest and leave their children for school

Telapak have a long experience to protect our forest from illegal logging
We produce many high quality reports based on our undercover investigation
“These reports detailed the culprits, the modus operandis, the ground zeros of destruction, and the trade routes through which the illegal timber reached faraway lands. We knew first hand that corruption, collusion, nepotism, and violence, which manifested as bribery, document falsification, “timber laundry” and even kidnapping and murder threats, played major roles in prolonging the sad state of forestry across the archipelago”
Between 1996 and 2005, we doing only advocacy and campaign…
BECAUSE OF OUR PERSISTENT CAMPAIGN,THE GOVERNMENT OF INDONESIA DID A BIG EVER OPERATION OF ILLEGAL LOGGING WITH THOUSANDS OF POLICE AND ARMY.
BUT, THE RESULT IS VERY DISAPPOINTING! BECAUSE ONLY SMALL PEOPLE PROCESS BY LAW.
In 2005, we start the new strategy to build solution with the illegal logger by doing community-based and sustainable forest management and we success to get FSC Certificate…
Koperasi Wana Lestari Menoreh, Kulonprogo, Jogjakarta

*FSC = Forest Stewardship Council
Community-based forest challenges
But, community-based forest faces challenges to scale…
Conventional and inefficient forest
management operation
- Price of certification (FSC and SVLK) is too expensive relative to the scale of the cooperative (economic of scale)
- Limited capability and resources to actively reach out to the market of capital and timber products (bargaining position)
- Slow and costly pen-and-paper forest inventory recording process
- Non-optimum harvest planning and operation
- Outdated database on determining Annual Harvest Capacity (JTT)
- High cost management
Each of the communities are just
too small to autonomously
operate
Capital that is sourced from private investors will be used for
- Development of IT infrastructure
- Forest inventory recording and harvest planning
- Consolidated marketing efforts
- Working capital to maintain inventory
- Distribution managemtn
- FSC and SVLK certification and training
Grant for cooperatives that is sourced from grantor will be used for:
- Procurement of cooperatives’ infrastructure
- Initial operation of cooperatives
- Recruitment and socialization
Inclusive Ownership : Farmers Not Only Stakeholder But Also Shareholder
Telapak
Grant for Telapak that is sourced from grantor will be used for:
- Community investigation and engagaement
- Build the social organization that able to support implementation of sustainable forest management
Economic of Scale Bargaining Position Cut Down Cost
- Consistently implement the international standard on sustainably managing the forest
- Scientific research as a basis of decision making and strategy development
SOBI comes up with solutions to overcome these problems
High-standard on sustainability
Consolidated efforts IT-based forest management system
- Group manager for forest-management certification (FSC and SVLK)
- Centralized knowledge management
- Aggregator that actively engages the buyers and investors
- End-to-end forest management system from inventory recording to timber-product delivery tracking
- Data can be updated in a timely manner
SOBI develop ‘human central databases’ who allow famers became a key player in sustainable forest management
