E911?!

we need

prepare?
HERE’S THEPOTENTIAL PROBLEM
Imagine if an employee at your office has a
medical emergency after normal working hours
with nobody around. They dial 911 from a desk
phone and the ambulance arrives. However, the
First Responders can’t find them! Because of
changes in telecommunications technology
over the past 10 years, this is a very real
possibility for your County right now!

POTSPRI
HOW DID WEGET HERE?
Telecommunications changed from static phone
lines (POTS, PRI) to dynamic (VoIP) and from a
monopoly to endless competitors. This has made
the traditional 911 technology obsolete. We need
to update our infrastructure as a matter of public
safety.

HOW A 911 CALL WORKS

911 Call Center where the Caller is within a 7,000
square feet workspace
Offices, warehouse, shop floor, storage area,
production area, commons area, hallways,
conference room
When calling 911
“Workspace”

June 25, 2019 the State of MI followed suit of
many other states and issued a new law regarding
E911
Public Act 30
WHAT IS THENEW E911 LAW?
Phone Systems only
CELLPHONESAPPLICABLE?
Unless cellphones are connected to the
MLTS, there’s no need to involve them
(check with your MLTS Provider if they
are integrated with your system / service)
NOT CONNECTED
If using app on cellphones (to connect to
the MLTS) you must evaluate if and how
911 calls are made

What about NG911, Kari’s Law, Ray Baum Act?
PSAP can receive texts, pictures and video as well as back up each other for overflow. MI awarded $3.9M to upgrade PSAPs.
NG911 (Next Generation 911)
Federal law-All MLTS must eliminate dialing a digit (e.g. 8,9) to get an outside line to dial 911 and designate someone internally when a 911 call was place. Went into effect Feb 16, 2020.
Kari’s Law
What about NG911, Kari’s Law, Ray Baum Act?
Fed law- Similar to Michigan’s E911, section 506 directs the FCC “to conclude a proceeding aimed at improving the ‘dispatchable location’ information provided to public safety at the time of a 911 call.” Compliance date is January 6, 2021 for Fixed MLTS and January 6, 2022 for Mobile Text.
