countries Accenture operates in, followed by continued content refinement and enablement and

Revamping the Customer Experience: Transparent Transformation

Journey with Implementation of SAP C/4HANA

Challenge

Aditya Birla Chemicals has plants across three countries. The firm did not have customer engagement

software. The presales process was performed by e-mail, and the database was maintained in Microsoft

Excel. The sales team had to coordinate with the back-end team manually, which, in turn, entered data in

the ERP system manually. If any data was required at a global level, the teams had to coordinate

manually and consolidate it.

Solution

The SAP C/4HANA suite was implemented to integrate the presales process with the ERP system in real

time and to consolidate data from three plants. Features such as potential mapping, budgeting, and

forecasting were added to facilitate inventory planning and minimize costs.

Outcome

SAP C/4HANA enabled real-time integration of the presales process with the SAP ERP application. The

business can analyze consolidated data from the system at multiple levels for all three plants, eliminating

manual coordination and significantly reducing the chance of error. Products under R&D can be tracked

centrally through SAP C/4HANA. The costs incurred and the return on investment achieved from sample

products can be estimated more accurately.

Project Spring: Transforming the New American Airlines to a People-First

Culture

Challenge

After the merger of American Airlines and US Airways, the company knew that a “people-first” culture

would be critical to its success and affect every business outcome. The new American Airlines faced the

challenge of migrating employee bases across 60 different countries from multiple on-premise systems to

one best-of-breed, future-proof cloud platform that would deliver the unified, consistent, caring, and

trusted workforce experience of the future.

Solution

American Airlines chose SAP SuccessFactors solutions and SAP Cloud Platform because of their

mature global and local capabilities, quarterly modernization, and future-proof capabilities, extensibility of

the solution, best-in-class workforce experience, and a long and trusted partnership with SAP going back

to the late 1990s.

Outcome

The project went live in March 2018 and included 335,000 total employee records (current and retired),

60 different countries and over 150 unique interfaces. The benefits for and impact on the workforce were

felt immediately. The best-in-class features, future-proof capabilities, and foundation on which the

company can innovate and integrate allow the new American Airlines to become both an innovator and a

global leader for empowering a world-class, people-first culture.

Asociacion de Cooperativas Argentinas has 50,000 producers that make up a fundamental part of the

agro-industrial Argentinean chain. It wanted a simple and intelligent way to monitor each stage of the

farming campaigns in the fields, from seeding to harvesting on a large scale. Consuming satellite imagery

on its own was challenging and did not provide visibility into the health of the crops and fields. The lack of

insights lead to increased costs while creating negative affects on socioeconomics and environments in

Argentina.

Solution

An intelligent spatial platform was built by combining SAP Cloud Platform, SAP HANA spatial services,

and SAP Leonardo Machine Learning Foundation. This innovative system provides insights from the

fields using satellite and drone imagery, weather data, and machine learning. Combined with business

data from Asociacion de Cooperativas Argentinas, the insights provide daily end-to-end monitoring of

crops to determine anomalous areas to inspect for feasible pests and diseases.

Challenge

Key business challenges involved the tracking and tracing of installed facilities and assets as well as

improving maintenance and monitoring activities. This approach was needed not only to improve process

efficiency, but also to remain compliant with federal and state safety regulations for gas pipelines.

Solution

The solution included three different applications. One enabled the CNG business to use the Esri ArcGIS

solution for tracking and traceability and capture high precision GIS data. The second took advantage of

the Internet of Things and AI to react instantly and accurately to pipeline leakages. The third application

provided an integrated immersive experience using augmented reality. Engineers can now interact with

the asset, including its maintenance history, allowing them to make critical decisions on the ground.

Outcome

Opportunities have been identified to build, operate, and maintain Avangrid’s gas facilities in a safer and

more efficient manner using modern technologies.

BASF data scientists needed a consistent and flexible data-pipeline solution to apply machine learning

models to solve use cases for several entities (business units and regions) without having to rebuild

unique data pipelines for each use case.

BASF and SAP co-innovated a solution with SAP Data Hub to address BASF’s need for consistent and

flexible data orchestration to cover multiple data sources, data-pipelining, and data governance to which

BASF machine learning models could easily be applied to solve business challenges.

Non-revenue water (NRW) is clean, treated drinking water that is lost before it reaches the customer.

In Belgium, 20% of the water distributed by De Watergroep will never be invoiced (the European average

is 23%), which is a substantial loss. With public and political pressure on NRW rising, De Watergroep

sought a more practical, far-reaching solution. That’s how the reduction of NRW became a prime focus

and part of its strategic goals.

Solution

With 34,000 kilometers of pipes, most of which are about 100 years old, it was time for a new approach.

Instead of using tools and shovels, it was better to have digital tools help the leak-detection team. Team

personnel now rely on the newest SAP technologies, ranging from SAP HANA, express edition and the

integration of R for use of SAP Leonardo. Reporting has changed dramatically as well. Instead of going

through endless rows in Microsoft Excel, reporting is now shown in a digital board reporting mode, using

SAP Analytics Cloud and SAP Digital Boardroom. This approach helps the team discover insights instead

of data and management to make better-informed decisions.

Outcome

The leak-reporting team now works differently. Instead of working based on job descriptions, its members

put processes at the heart of everything they do. They also work centrally instead of regionally and can

count on reliable sets of data, allowing them to discover insights instead of data. Reporting on NRW has

become less complex and does not require specific skills. The workload has been reduced along with the

Products in Welding Operations with loT Technology

Challenge

The core business of Martur Fompak International is to design and manufacture vehicle cockpit components such as

complete seating, seat frames with a welding process, dashboards, door panels, and so on with excellent quality.

Focusing on frame welding, we aim to create a reliable and stable manufacturing process with a higher quality level

and competitive cost. An average of 60 welding points vary from product to product. To fulfill product safety and

quality requirements, continuous parametric control is performed throughout the arc welding process. Welding

penetration, by its nature, is controlled frequently with destructive tests, resulting in a high scrap rate, consumable

expense, and energy and labor costs.

Solution

A customer gateway software collects 80 million data points that affect the cost and quality of the frame from about 2

million welding points per day by communicating with sensors, robots, welding machines, and programmable logic

controller. Data streaming at intervals of 100 ms, such as current, voltage, wire speed, process status, product,

welding point, temperature, gas electricity, air, and error code of the robot are analyzed instantly with the SAP

Streaming Analytics service and transferred to the SAP HANA platform, the SAP ERP application, and Supervisory

Control and Data Acquisition, or SCADA, with a timestamp. By using the collected data, some indictors can be

calculated and reported for each welding point on the SAP Business Warehouse application and SAP

BusinessObjects business intelligence solutions. Poor quality and breakdown conditions are detected through the

instrument of predictive analytics algorithms of SAP HANA.

Outcome

Analysis of streaming data based on each welding point has already resulted in significantly lower rejection rates,

consumables cost, energy usage, and labor costs thanks to increased production process visibility and improved

predictive quality analytics. This system also provided a shorter maintenance period through strict parametric robotic

error codes, lower spare part costs, and improved value- and non-value-added operation times in a welding cycle

related to a welding robot.

Railroad logistics is a crucial sector for the economy of Kazakhstan and for partners in Asia and Europe,

transferring cargo across the ninth-largest country in the world. However, planning processes across all

departments in the railroad remained mostly manual, taking up to 260 days and involving more than

2,000. Because of a lack of technology to assist with huge amounts of cargo and freight data, the

company struggled to make timely investment and managerial decisions, fully capture market potential,

respond to market changes, and have a reliable tool to align the shareholder’s expectations with the

company’s resources.

Solution

The Integrated Planning System (IPS) is designed to encompass the entire planning lifecycle, covering

demand and revenue forecasts, loaded and empty wagon traffic management, traffic route optimization,

and calculation of associated operational financial metrics on one user-friendly portal. This approach

gives business users instant access to data, conduct predictive scenario analysis, and identify investment

opportunities along the separate streams of cargo traffic. In addition, the tool assists in building

communication with shareholders by aligning KPI expectations with the company’s ability to meet them.

Currently, three of five modules of the product (demand forecasting, wagon traffic forecasting, and

revenue calculation) are in active use. The results of the system functionality test have provided ground to

Newcrest has a significant field workforce that supports key operational activities at our mining sites. The business

gave Group IT and digital the challenge to minimize the time our field workforce spends on the desktop completing

Challenge

A modern infrastructure that connects everyone and everything requires smart logistics. But for many

years, Proximus, Belgium’s largest information and communications technology provider, was struggling

with a lack of visibility into one of its major company assets, namely copper and fiber reels, which are used

to build and modernize its extensive network infrastructure. After reels had been shipped to contractors and

subcontractors at more than 7,000 sites, the logistics department lacked knowledge of their exact location

and material consumption levels, resulting in inefficiencies, late returns of reels, and project delays.

Solution

Jointly with SAP and Ordina, Proximus developed a custom sensor-based smart reel application that is

used by its central logistics department to track cable reels from warehouse to installation site. The sensor

technology solution, LoRa, to connect the reels is provided by Proximus itself, and SAP Leonardo

technologies are used to collect and process the data for visualization using the SAP Fiori user experience

and for integration with back-end systems to document material status and consumption levels correctly. In

the pilot phase, 450 copper reels (out of 1,000) were equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) sensors to

determine their exact position.

Outcome

The deployment of the pilot has already resulted in significantly lower stock levels and material costs due

to increased stock visibility, improved forecasts, and lower order volumes. Rolling out the solution to cover

all copper and fiber reels as well as enhancements to capture additional parameters, such as rotation,

temperature, and shock detection, will lead to even larger savings and fewer projects delays.

Challenge

Several constraints in Sasol’s sales and marketing process had led to Sasol attaining a low net promoter

index (NPI) for customer loyalty and service. This situation was prohibiting expansion of Sasol’s business

into global markets. One area of particular concern was a lengthy and tedious ordering process that was

based exclusively on a call center and was very manual. Sasol needed to improve its NPI score and

reduce the cost to serve for its Chemicals and Energy business units. Sasol also needed to integrate

several back ends in SAP software.

Solution

The solution consisted of two online business-to-business ordering portals for Sasol’s Chemicals and

Energy businesses, both of which were designed in collaboration with Sasol’s customers. The user

interface was based on SAPUI5, which was customized to align closely with Sasol brand and identity.

Both portals were built on SAP Cloud Platform (CP) to offer smooth integration between the portal and

the back ends securely. The project was managed using Sasol’s Agile methodology to deliver incremental

value to customers.

Outcome

After deployment of the online portal in June 2018, it has been scaled to over 900 Sasol users, and

successfully integrated with two back-end systems across 2 countries. This omnichannel solution has

aided Sasol business users and end customers alike. It has streamlined business processes, reducing

the time and cost of placing an order. Customers are also pleased with a digital solution that speaks to

their needs, so that Sasol’s NPI has improved.

The State of Arkansas is experiencing the fastest-growing prison population rate in the country, causing a

dramatic increase in state spending, economic loss, and overburdened state agencies. In 2017, Act 423

legislation was passed by the State, setting a goal to reduce the projected growth in the prison population

by 10% (1,650 fewer people) by FY2023 to avert $288.5 million in prison construction costs.

SAP and the State of Arkansas collaboratively engaged in an SAP Design Thinking workshop, which led

to a co-innovation proof of concept (POC) utilizing SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud, SAP Predictive Analytics

software, machine learning, and SAP Analytics Cloud to prove real-time analysis of recidivism risk,

influencing behaviors, and guidance on programmatic interventions. This approach provides the State

with the ability to make data-driven, insightful decisions on policies to mitigate these behaviors better and

reduce recidivism.

Outcome

The real-time, dynamic predictive model generates program or intervention recommendations to help

prepare offenders for rehabilitation into society, which ultimately leads to reduced recidivism. Before the

POC, these outputs were impossible in the State due to siloed processes; dated infrastructure and

applications; historically-focused, time-consuming analysis; and lack of executed data sharing.

Through a merger, Swisscom inherited a second, 15-year-old data warehouse (DW) with complicated architectures.

To support integrated financial closing, it needed to be merged with Swisscom’s own IT landscape consisting of SAP

and non-SAP DWs while consolidating the ERP instances on SAP ERP on SAP HANA. Because of this situation and

other shortcomings, Swisscom set out to completely transform its enterprise-wide DW landscape into a

contemporary data and analytical platform supporting intelligent processes, a state-of-the-art user experience, and

simpler IT operations.

Solution

Four years ago, Swisscom formed a project called OneBI. After creating a governance framework and reviewing

more than 250 existing use cases, it consolidated three DWs into one DW running the SAP Business Warehouse

(SAP BW) application on SAP HANA with mixed modeling and real-time data provisioning in a Big Bang approach. In

a second step, Swisscom successfully completed the world’s-first conversion from SAP BW to SAP BW/4HANA – all

while ensuring regulatory compliance for data access and interfaces. In parallel, Swisscom went live with its first

predictive use cases using SAP Predictive Analytics. Apart from deploying additional predictive use cases, Swisscom

has started to connect these cases with SAP Analytics Cloud.

Outcome

With its OneBI data warehouse, Swisscom now has one single source of truth for financial data that is fully integrated

Challenge

The university had not kept pace with the advances and best practices taking place in businesses around

the world. Employees worked in silos on tasks, management was bureaucratic, paperwork was prevalent,

and IT investments were disparate and antiquated, based on internal developments. Culturally,

employees didn’t have the information they needed to be effective, make decisions, or improve.

Solution

We chose SAP software because we needed an integrated system that would grow with the university,

could take advantage of best practices around the world, and was future-proof. We implemented

SAP S/4HANA and the SAP Business Planning and Consolidation application to automate the back

office, finance, and purchasing. We also implemented the SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central,

SAP SuccessFactors Learning, SAP SuccessFactors Recruitment, and SAP SuccessFactors

Performance & Goals solutions along with the SAP Jam collaboration platform.

Outcome

The culture of the university is being completely transformed. Transformation has taken place in all our

back-office processes, HR performance management, and more. Other universities have taken notice,

and at least five are already following our lead.

SAP S/4 HANA (greenfield) was implemented for a business unit as a finance-first cornerstone of the

transformation journey that includes general ledger; fixed assets subledger; and accounts payable and

accounts receivable reporting at the level of the general ledger. In parallel, the corporate central finance

foundation was taken live, centralizing the general ledger across six ERP systems.

• One robust system to complete the full financial close, including booking of all journal entries

Challenge

Topgolf Australia (as a Village Roadshow joint venture) was building a new $35 million, three-level

entertainment venue on the Gold Coast. The project team had a preselected analytics solution, but it

could not incorporate all the Australian-specific requirements. A different analytics solution was required

just prior to the launch of the venue. Without a solution, we wouldn’t be able to launch, risking a loss of

approximately $77,000 per day.

Solution

The Topgolf entertainment venue operates using real-time and near-real-time business intelligence and

analytics. We chose SAP software because of its speed and being the only solution comprehensive

enough to deal with the complexity of the project. It also happened to be the lowest cost. The solution

included SAP HANA, SAP Analytics Cloud, the SAP Business Warehouse application, and SAP Business

Objects business intelligence solutions.

Outcome

The project went live in June 2018, in only three weeks from the start date. A 360-degree view of

management and operational analytics were available on day-one and are utilized every day.

boarder trading, and product recalls.

• The chain code and distributed ledger have been built on Hyperledger, with a smart contract layer and

design that caters to the information requirements of each player in the supply chain.

• A massive parallel processing database engine is delivered through SAP HANA and a mobile

application for downstream end users to scan the bar codes of medicine products with SAP Cloud

Platform.

Outcome

eZTracker allows scanning of bar codes of medicine products from mobile devices, immediately notifying

the customer:

• If the product is genuine or counterfeit

• Whether the product is legitimately distributed

• Where the product was manufactured

Fake products trigger automatic alerts, notifying manufacturers and Zuellig Pharma where the supply

chain was breached.
