Never forget that a chart is also a visual, and all the rules and effects of visual storytelling still happen in charting Scott McCloud uses the term ‘closure’ to talk about what audiences do in the gutters, the white spaces between panels in a comic book – this is where the audience is in charge of the storytelling, filling that space imaginatively, joining the elements on the page together into a story structure This also happens between the bars in a bar chart for example – the story here of an increasingly desperate fight with increasingly improvised and close quartered weapons Human beings are by nature visually literate, but this does not always help them be charting literate, in fact it can often hinder it. We need to understand the mechanisms of visual storytelling and also the underlying mechanisms of storytelling: structure, arcs, acts, just as much as we need to understand design (which is distinct from visual storytelling), charting or coding
