Big Data – Realizing the Potential
Gary Bloom, CEO, MarkLogic Christopher Lindblad, Founder, MarkLogic Shaun Connolly, VP Corporate Strategy, Hortonworks
Big Data is gaining a lot of attention around the world, but the phase itself can be a misnomer. Too often, conversations focus on the “Big,” when the real impact in fact comes from the “Data.” The same is true for Open Source. There is a lot of hype about Open Source technologies, but often with little understanding about the amount of resources it takes to make the technology enterprise-grade and mission-ready.
In this keynote, we will explore how MarkLogic helps customers manage data and build applications that are flexible and responsive to change. Our customers build applications on MarkLogic with speed and agility that relational database technology is unable to match. They will also explore how the combination of Hadoop and an Enterprise NoSQL database can help organizations segregate data among different storage and computation environments to optimize cost, performance, availability and flexibility.
9:45am – 10:30am
Harnessing the Power of Technology to Compete in the 21st Century
Aneesh Chopra, Former Chief Technology Officer of the United States
Aneesh Chopra developed an “open innovation” strategy that tapped citizen expertise to make government smarter and more responsive to private sector demands. As he comments on the key technology trends that confront public and private sector organizations, including the growth of big data, mobile broadband, the importance of privacy and security and the promise of new collaboration tools, Chopra will share his insights on how organizations can effectively develop new products and services to meet growing customer demands.

new ways of accessing content, new ways of finding content, and new ways of delivering content to the public and SAMHSA’s stakeholders. The underlying principle for this new support tool is to “create once, publish everywhere.” In this session, we will talk about the genesis, benefits, technical approach, initial outcomes and lessons learned from the project. We’ll also look at where the repository may take us and SAMHSA’s content in the future.
3:00pm – 3:40pm
Geospatial Analysis for Unstructured Information
Bill Major, Sr. Technical Analyst, Esri
Efficiently incorporating unstructured information into geospatial analysis is a big challenge for analysts. Analysts are often required to expend significant time and effort to incorporate geospatial information within textual assets using manual processes, use a search tool to perform full text search, and finally integrate results in a geospatial analysis environment. This session will describe a MarkLogic-Esri solution which provides a real-time geospatial fusion framework for unstructured information.
It’s All About the Data
Chuck Aaron, Program Manager, KMD, US Department of Homeland Security
DHS has significant data sharing challenges, aggregating data from multiple government sources and exchanging with first responders at the state and local level. The data arrives in multiple formats and is stored in hundreds of different data sources. A common storage and exchange format is XML (specifically NIEM). This session will discuss DHS’s focus on technologies to natively exploit XML data sharing.
3:40pm – 4:20pm
Applying Advanced Analytics to Government Big Data Challenges
Tim Hoechst, CTO, Agilex
The Big Data challenge for Government organizations is transforming large amounts of complex data into meaningful insight and actionable intelligence. This session will discuss the use of Latent Semantic Indexing techniques to discover new relationships and key concepts in extremely large volumes of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data.

Big Data Challenges in Healthcare
Capt. Michael Weiner, Chief Medical Information Officer, IPO
Federal Facilitated Exchange
Chirayu Desai, Vice President, CGI Federal
CMS’ Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight is implementing the Federal Insurance Exchange as required by the Affordability Care Act. The Insurance Exchange will be able to perform all of the major functions of an exchange - claims management, eligibility and enrollment activities, consumer assistance, premium tax credit calculation and financial management, such as payments to issuers. The Affordable Care Act requires the creation of a competitive health insurance marketplace for States and territories to help bring insurance coverage to 34 million additional Americans. Because of the scale, multiple state data types, and lifecycle cost implications of the exchange, MarkLogic was selected as the transactional database to support the delivery of the Federal Insurance Exchange platform. CGI is the prime systems integrator to implement the Exchange, and will discuss the benefits of using a native XML database to support the scale, diversity and lifecycle cost requirements in this first of a kind project.
2:10pm – 2:50pm
How SAMHSA is Using XML to Expand Public Engagement on Critical Behavioral Health Topics
Adam Lee, Director of Information Systems, IQ Solutions Atul Ganatra, Enterprise Systems Architect, IQ Solutions
SAMHSA’s Public Engagement Platform (PEP), managed by the Office of Communications (OC), provides the public with one-stop access to the Agency’s behavioral health communication products, services, and information. Continuing to grow SAMHSA’s audiences using traditional print channels is cost prohibitive. To respond to this need and align with the White House Digital Government Strategy, IQ Solutions used MarkLogic to create an XML based publications content repository to house the Agency’s products. The repository will enable SAMHSA content owners to store and deliver SAMHSA publication content through any digital communication channels. It will provide
