Everything ELECTRI International does for our industry is powerful and forward thinking. Everything ELECTRI accomplishes helps us make new connections with those who choose to take advantage of the opportunities ELECTRI provides.
Dennis F. Quebe
Chairman, Board of Trustees
At a recent meeting with several contractor colleagues, the conversation turned to the topic of “keeping up”. We agreed that it takes a tremendous amount of time to juggle projects, paperwork, market opportunities, technology advances and training.
We started talking about the networking, the projects, and the good advice that we get from the research and education offered by our own foundation—ELECTRI International. The description that caught my attention came when one contractor described ELECTRI as making powerful connections. For me, this phrase perfectly explains what ELECTRI International contributes to our contractors and industry as a whole.
Each research project recommended by the ELECTRI Council and then commissioned by the ELECTRI Board of Trustees has to have a clear and compelling message: The results that come from this project will give you powerful ammunition to run your company better and continue to grow your business.
Then, we look at the educational side. ELECTRI produces educational workshops and seminars that grow out of the research. We offer Wendt Award Scholarships to help Chapters present these programs and to connect with the primary researchers. Our Talent Initiative to attract young graduates into the industry is flourishing. ELECTRI’s international Cross-Border initiatives are giving our US contractors a better awareness of other cultures serving this industry and an international network to access new business opportunities.
I want to thank the contractors and industry allies who provide their time, energy, and financial resources to ELECTRI International. No other construction-related foundation has the depth of support that ours achieves year after year.
You make our connections powerful.
Sincerely,
Dennis F. QuebeChairman, Board of TrusteesELECTRI International

What excites me the most about ELECTRI International is the fact that everyone involved constantly has new ideas.
ELECTRI Council members design new research initiatives. They find new ways to make it more interesting for college students to be active and involved with ELECTRI projects and competitions. They offer suggestions for new locations for our Cross-Border meetings and new project sites for our Student Passport Initiatives.
When ELECTRI International was first formed in the late 1980s, our leaders made the decision that everyone who wanted a real role in the Foundation would have that opportunity. Our contributors know that they have a voice and a vote in selecting our project agenda. Many of them choose to work on a variety of ELECTRI committees—from program review to project task forces to competition juries to the Kitchen Cabinet.
ELECTRI International’s strength comes from their strength and from the incredible network of connections that these leaders have helped put together for the electrical construction industry.

Every engine needs a powerful source of energy in order to work at its maximum. For ELECTRI International, that energy comes from your volunteer time and financial commitments.
Thanks to the generosity of contractors, manufacturers, distributors, and utilities throughout North America, ELECTRI has a network of individuals who are helping our industry succeed. Everyone who becomes connected with ELECTRI
n understands and values the importance of conducting the best research for our industry
n welcomes the interaction that ELECTRI offers by bringing together seasoned contractors, NECA Chapters, and the academic research community n recognizes and uses opportunities to get students together with contractors to build a strong bridge from current managers to the management teams of the future.
I especially want to recognize the members of the ELECTRI Council and the Kitchen Cabinet—our fantastic fund-raising committee. All of them use their connections to bring ELECTRI to the attention of other companies and leaders who should be involved with ELECTRI. Their batting average is outstanding. In 2012, ELECTRI received gifts and grants totaling $1,056,900. For the first three quarters of 2013, ELECTRI has already connected with contributors for a total of $1,128,700.
Yes, ELECTRI International has powerful connections and I hope you’re one of them.

Research is at the very heart of the ELECTRI International agenda. Each year, the Foundation issues a Request for Proposals, based on topics and ideas that you have told us are important to your business.
ELECTRI connects with the academic community. Senior researchers meet with the ELECTRI Council and present their best proposals for major funding consideration each January. These initiatives are time- sensitive and keenly important for our industry’s growth.
Another developed network is with younger academics. They can apply each July for smaller, quicker research grants. These awards get them familiar with our industry and, hopefully, encourage them to stay active with electrical construction and ELECTRI International.
Every research proposal that makes it to the ELECTRI Council for discussion and a vote has been vetted by ELECTRI’s Program Review Committee. This committee is careful to address the needs of both inside and line contractors. Whether the researcher responds to the RFP with a safety topic or a business development analysis, their proposed work is carefully analyzed and evaluated before ELECTRI invites them to a Council meeting.
We appreciate the hard work that our Program Review Committee members put into this process each year, reviewing and evaluating close to 60 proposals per round.
We welcome topic recommendations from contractors and chapters across the country and we invite Council members to join this Committee.

Education Center Programs
ELECTRI International delivers quality research products that are offered as education and training programs through NECA’s Management Education Institute (MEI). Educational seminars and workshops are available for electrical contractors and managers who need the expertise to keep their companies moving forward in periods of rapid change.
In 2013, ELECTRI’s Education Center awarded Wendt Scholarship grants to 16 NECA Chapters to offer training through MEI for their members.
Launched in 2007, the Talent Initiative fosters interest in the electrical construction industry among college students and faculty members in construction management and related fields. The Talent Initiative is producing well-rounded electrical managers prepared to improve the delivery of electrical construction projects and enhance company profits.
In 2013, ELECTRI will award up to 28 grants to NECA Chapters to supplement chapter scholarships and/or travel funds to Convention for member of their Student Chapters. In addition, 28 grants will be awarded to faculty members who develop and coordinate NECA Student Chapter activities.
For its annual Green Energy Challenge Competition, ELECTRI awards prizes to the three finalist student teams to offset travel and presentation costs. Fifteen teams participated in the 2013 Competition.
International Center Programs
ELECTRI International established annual Cross-Border Meetings to offer electrical contractors an opportunity to network and exchange ideas with their counterparts in other countries and to learn about the rewards and challenges of joint ventures.
In March 2013, more than 40 U.S. contractors, engineers, and their guests gathered in Quito, Ecuador for the 8th ELECTRI International Cross Border Meeting. Participants from North, Central, and South America experienced a rich mix of business and professional meetings and social events during the conference.
The ELECTRI International Student Service Project is currently being fine-tuned and will be developed into a NECA student chapter competition. Details will be published in the 2nd half of 2013.
Funded Projects and Programs
A unique characteristic of ELECTRI International is the part played by the academic community and the powerful relationship between the academic researchers and the ELECTRI Council members. Over the years, a strong bond between the two has evolved, resulting in great benefit for both the industry and the academy community.
ELECTRI projects are based upon a strong foundation of collaboration between the researcher and a task force of knowledgeable, interested, and committed practitioners who guide and shape the research agenda to meet the practical needs of the industry. Not only is this of great help to the researchers who have access to industry resources, but it also enhances the assimilation of research results into industry practice. Task force participation enables practitioners to benefit from a better understand of
the concepts and tools and it helps them to implement quickly and effectively improvements resulting from the research.
Researchers are also committed to having their research disseminated and applied throughout the industry in support of improving the way electrical construction is accomplished. This certainly helps the contractors, improves the industry as a whole, and helps build a stronger nation. By providing solid credibility, academic-based research puts contractors and construction representatives in a stronger position when they compete for customer support and petition for improvements in governmental regulations.
For more than a quarter of a century, ELECTRI’s support of academic research has enhanced the standing of construction in the academic community. Working with ELECTRI has enabled a number of young academics to gain tenure and promotion and has established the electrical sector as a strong component of construction education. ELECTRI has created a vital pipeline for bringing young talent into the industry and offers interesting and challenging opportunities for young graduates.
ELECTRI International has been a leader in developing a powerful industry/academic partnership. I look for it to continue to lead this initiative even further throughout the next quarter century.
