The design of the cooling tower, exterior appearance, steel structure, color, noise, fan and air discharge, are designed to meet the project requirements.
RCD Model
The lateral flow closed circuit cooing tower is designed with modular configuration. This lateral flow closed circuit cooling tower is low noise and suitable for all industrial, HVAC and commercial applications. It is also applicable for the working condition where the temperature difference is 39.2 – 46.4°F.
RER has applied an easy and simple design to suit the overall cooling tower layout, foundation, pipings, maintenance, site connections and remote control requirements.

Coil consists of water inlet and outlet headers, support and
inlet and outlet piping.
Coil consists of serpentine pipes running in a slope opposite to
the air flow.
The slope of each pipe is not less than 0.01 for easy drainage.
The water pipe flow velocity inside the pipe is 2 ft/sec – 6.5
ft/sec.
Air purge should be installed at the top of the water pipe system.
There are special quick connect fittings at the inlet and outlet
of each serpentine pipe.
The coil water side resistance is less than or equal to 1670
lbs./ft2 .
The standard coil material is hot dip galvanized carbon steel with
options: type S: 304 (or 316L) stainless steel and type T: copper.

RER cooling towers are constructed of steel, including the
frames, casings, pans, and distribution box etc. Steel is G235, .06”
-.16” thickness, with anti-corrosion hot dip galvanized steel
Frame is made of .12” - .16” thickness double folded steel and
assembled with galvanized bolts without welding to
withstand 9.4 lbs./ft2 wind load and 8 seismic intensity.

Casing is made of .06” - .08”thickness double folded steel
assembled with galvanized bolts without welding, .08”
thickness for lower tower and .06” thickness for upper tower.

The sloped basin design reduces operating weight, avoids the
formation of algae fungus in the pan and is equipped with L
shape drain outlet at the bottom of the concave basin pan.
Cold water basin
Optional: The basin material can be 304 (316L) stainless steel, and
the frame and casing material can be 304 (316L) stainless steel.
The Tower basin support is made of hot dipped galvanized steel
with a pallet block design made of hot dipped galvanized steel
channel which allows for easy rigging and minimize the site
foundation cost.

Spray pump is based on the JIS-C4210 Standards, motor protection
class IP55, insulation class F. The spray pump head is based on
the height of the cooling tower i.e. from 9.84 ft. to 26.25 ft.

Basin type water distribution by gravity:Material is G235
(Z700) heavy gauge galvanized steel and pressure loss is
≤104.41bs/ft2
Water distribution pipes: There is a self-balance buffer chamber
in front of the water distribution pipes to provide an evenly
pressurized uniform water distribution and there are easy to
dismantle rings in between the chamber and the pipes for
maintenance during operation.
Inlet pipe material : Hot dip galvanized steel pipe, and 304
stainless steel is optional.
Nozzles: The ABS nozzle can be replaced during operation, and
the spray angle can be adjusted.
Water distribution mode
Spray system consists of spray pump, water inlet pipe valve, water
distribution pipes, pre-cooling fill nozzles, make up water supply
device, drainage device, water treatment, etc. Fills are designed with the most suitable flame retardant PVC
material to give the best thermal performance taking into
consideration the ventilation, water quality and maintenance
conditions. Fills are suspended on galvanized steel pipes for easy
maintenance and effective evaporation. The integral design of the
louver and fill enables the collection of water without additional
device to reduce the drift loss to less than 0.001%. There are two
types of fills:
A. Standard PVC fill, good for temperature of 140˚F (60 ℃).
B. High temperature PP fill, good for temperature of 221˚F (105 ℃).

There is a makeup water float valve and an overflow connection.
The bottom of basin is sloped and has to bleed off periodically to
reduce the mineral content.

The Fan blade is an aluminum alloy hollow airfoil blade suitable for
ambient temperature from -4˚F to 158˚F and the blade angle index
can be adjusted if needed.

Series RCS ( fan diameter ≤62.99” ) fan assembly is direct drive
(440 - 750 RPM), single side air inlet, top air discharge , with built-in
maintenance free bearing.
Series RCD-34X to RCD-39X, double side air inlets towers, ( fan
diameter ≤126”) fan assemblies are belt driven, with industrial
grade multi-groove V belt rated 150% motor power output and can
be adjusted by special tightening bolt; pulley is either cast iron or
aluminum alloy and there are easy accessible oil filling and draining
holes.
Series RCD-4XX, double side air inlets towers, ( fan diameter ≤126” )
are gear driven, with heavy duty efficient transmission gear box
made of low alloy structural steel.
Classification of Fan for Cooling Tower
Fan Assembly
Noise is affected by the design and tower size, fan discharge,
type of fan blade, air pressure drop, fan discharge area, fan
speed, silencers, heat exchanger area, spray area, etc. There are
ways to minimize noise to meet the requirements.
Motor for Fan Motors for fan assemblies are fully enclosed outdoor type (TEFC or TEAO) suitable for hot and humid environment.
Motor is based on JIS-C4210 Standards, motor protection class IP55, insulation class F.
Motor design is based on 1.15 safety factor with built-in maintenance free bearings.
Options: variable frequency drive motor, high efficient motor, multi speed motor.
Options are available for the following items

Ladder with safety cage, handrail guard and platform, materials to be galvanized steel for as standard and stainless steel as also optional.
Electric heater for the basin freeze protection.
Electric level control sensor.
Electric control panel
Control panel is available to control motor, water temperature,
water level to achieve operation efficiency. Remote monitoring,
PLC intelligent centralized control and variable frequency
control are optional.

RER’s medium and large size cooling towers provide special
features for site assemble and shipping. It reduces the number
of man hours of site installation as about 70% of the production
is completed at the factory including those complicated
sub-assemblies allowing large components to be shipped in
semi-knocked down form to fit in containers for easy site
assembly and lower shipping cost.
Step 1: Manually (or use small simple hoist) install the bottom
frame item 5, then items 3 and 4.
Step 2: Install item 1, the coil with heavy duty crane.
Step 3: Install item 2, the fill with heavy duty crane.
Step 4:Manually (or use small simple crane) install the columns and
item 6 the fan support, and then complete the installation
of the frame.
The above a just a general description. It is a must to install
according to the "installation manual" strictly.
Step 5:Install item 8 the fan with a small simple hoist.
Item 1: The Coil fits into shipping containers and is to be
transported by forklift or crane.
Item 2: The fill will consist of 2 to 4 modules to fit into
shipping container and is to be transported by forklift or
crane.
Items 3 thru 8: Form the inner structure of the tower
consisting of the fan, spray sub-assemblies etc. All are designed
to be shipped semi knocked down for ease of assembly.

FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR DESIGN AND SELECTION
Cooling medium and make up waterThe fluid cooling medium in the closed-circuit cooling tower has to be
compatible with the cooling coil material to prevent corrosion.
The system water going thru the coil has to be treated to meet with the
water quality requirements.
Maintenance of water distribution systemAs water, will evaporate during operation with minerals and impurities
deposited in the pan, the water should be maintained regularly (pH
6.5 – 8.5). It is recommended to clear the pan once every week in
summer time and once every two weeks in winter time.
Make up water rate ≈ 1.5%
Application requirements
Points to be considered for piping system
To stay away from acidic exhaust air, explosive dust, excessive soot and
excessive water vapor areas which may affect the operation of the towers.
When installed close to buildings, the air inlets need to stay away up
to 16.4 ft.
When installed inside a well, need to consider the effect of short circuiting.
Air induction device can be considered.
Piping and valves should be installed below the operating water level of the
cooling tower to prevent overflow and air suction;
Pump should be designed with sufficient lift ;
The design working pressure of the interface flange is 145 psi and all piping
should be well supported but not on the tower.
Control optionsWhen more than one tower is running, each tower can be programmed
to cycle on and off and the fans can be programmed to operate at
different speed (50% or 100%) or with variable speed control.
Able to change the water spray flow rate (only applicable to spraying
water temperature lower than 104˚F)
Keep circulating the water and make sure that the circulating water
temperature is not lower than 44.6 ˚F. Electric immersion heater may be
installed in the water tank. To add antifreeze in the water to prevent from
freezing, the ratio of solution is subject to ambient temperature.
