CHALLENGEDuringthewintermonths,sub-freezingtemperaturesarecommoninthisregionwhichcreateschallengesforthecompany’sdrumlevelmeasurementinstrumentation.
Theprimarylevelmeasurementontheboilerdrumsweredifferentialpressuretransmitterswithimpulsetubing(wetlegs).Duringwintermonthsfrozenwetlegscausederrorsintheindicateddrumlevelsresultinginunittrips.Toalleviatetheproblem,theimpulsetubeswereinsulatedandheattracedbuttheimpulsetubescontinuedtofreeze.
SOLUTIONAsaresult,thegassitesystemsengineerdecidedtoinvestigatealternativetechnologiestoimprovethereliabilityoftheboilerdrumlevelinstrumentation.WithsupportfromEmersonTMexperts,theyinstalledRosemount5300GuidedWaveRadarwithDynamicVaporCompensation(DVC)alongwithaRosemount9901bypasschamber.
Withprocessdesignconditionsexceeding2300psiand650°F,theRosemount5300withDVCprovidedfullycompensatedlevelmeasurements,independentofpressureandtemperature,resultinginaccurateandreliablelevelreadingsduringallstart-upandshut-downconditions,regardlessoftheweather.
