TDAmeritrade Thinkorswim Platform Navigation & Setup

This training guide covers:

1. Configuration of Color Scheme & Font Size before you Login.

2. High Level Thinkorswim(TOS) Platform Navigation.

3. One time Application Setup to configure the following :- – Default Data Refresh Settings and some standard Application Configuration

On the login screen, Click on Configure Button

Select the Color Scheme, Font Size you prefer and click on User Name : Remember Box”, then Click Save

Select the PaperMoney (for demo trading), enter User name and Password, then Click OK

Once Logged in, you will see this “Home” screen. This is for News announcements. You can close it by clicking the “X”.


Click this to Close the “Home Screen” Window

Click this “HOME” button to get back this

“Home Screen” Window.

This Home Screen will pop up every time you Login. You can disable it via the Default Setup

instructions in subsequent pages.

You will see this screen which shows an overview of your Account Status on the left window. You can close this window by clicking on the Arrow

on the Top Left Corner to enlarge the space for the right window


Your Account Balance which includes all open trades balance

Your Cash Balance

Amount you can use to purchase options

Select the account (if you have multiple accounts)

Click on this Arrow to Close the Left Window

Click on the “Trade” menu

Click on the “Setup” Button, then Select

“Application Settings”

Application Settings Configuration. Only change the options highlighted as needed. Leave the rest as default values.


Uncheck this if you do not want to show “Weekly & Quarterly

Expiry Options. We usually trade Monthly Expiry Options.

Uncheck this if you do not want to show the

Home Screen that always startup when you Login.

Lower the Quote Speed to “Moderate” if you want to

reduce the Bandwidth Impact. Always choose this when you

are attending the Face to Face Tutorial Sessions.

Enter your Email Address here if you want to receive Email notification for your

Stock Price Alerts, Orders Fills notification or

TOS announcements.

Select Notification Tab

Click on “Get Confirmation Code” and an email will be sent to ask you to confirm your email

before this feature can be activated. Follow the

instructions in that Email.

Check on the “Send Email” if you want the system to Send

you an Email when your Alert is triggered..

Check the “Alert is Triggered”

Check on the “Sound on Trigger” if you want the

system to create a sound when your Alert is Triggered.

Select the Information that you want to be included in

your Email when the Alert is triggered.

Check on the “Send Email” if you want the system to Send

you an Email when your Orders are filled.

Check the “Order Fills”

Check on the “Sound on Trigger” if you want the

system to create a sound when your Orders are filled.

Select the Information that you want to be included in

your Email when the Orders are filled.

Configure Default Stock Order Type and Quantity


Select the Default Stock Order Type. It’s better to

Choose “LIMIT” unless you buy mostly at “Market”

Select “Order Defaults” Tab

Enter your Maximum Stock Order Quantity to prevent

entering too high quantity by mistake.

Enter the standard increment you want when you click on the

increment arrow in the Trade Order Quantity field

Enter your typical/default Order Quantity to speed up

order entry.

Select the Stock Symbol and hit Enter

Select the Menu tab “Trade” and Submenu tab “All Products”

Click on the Arrow to expand and show the Option Chain (list of options strike prices available for the respective Options Expiry Month. The number in bracket is the number of days left to expiry date

These are the Bid & Ask Price for the Stock

This is last transacted price for the Stock

Select and Customize the “Option Chain Layout”


Click on this to Configure the Columns you want to see in the Option Chain

(refer to Next Page) Select Single to show Single Option Prices.

Select Vertical to show Vertical Option Spreads Prices.

Select the Number of Strike Prices you want to see in the

Option Chain

The prices on the Left are for Call Options

The prices on the Right are for Put Options

Customize Option Chain Layout


Click on this field and Select

“Customize”

Select these Fields from the “Available Items” on the left.

You can drag and drop it to rearrange the sequence. You

can choose to reduce the columns to just include Delta & Open Interest for Simplicity.

You can either Select the field then click “Add Items” or just Drag and Drop

the field from the left to the right.

Click OK to save it

The Default Columns are now Changed.

You can choose to Save this Column Layout with your

Preferred Layout Name by Choosing “Save As”
