Brava Marine Pty Ltd are based in Queensland, the powercatamaran capital of Australia. Recently they confirmed thatafter an extensive trials period covering several competingengine brands, they have now settled on Yanmar. The 4LHAseries are their engines of choice for the production powercatamaran the Brava 42.

Designer and managing director Peter Brady states. “The4LH series lower revs, high torque and simplicity were thedriving factor behind our decision.” The 4LHA series powercurves work perfectly with high blade area, over squareskewed back propellers to provide amazing manoeuvrabilityand acceleration plus excellent fuel efficiency and drivethrough out the rev range.”

Peter went on to say, “The first boat out of the mouldachieved 22.5 knots powered by 2 x 190hp 4LHA –DTP’sand the second boat 23.5 knots powered by 2 x 240hp 4LHA– STP’s. Both these speeds were 1 knot above initialpredictions with even better performance anticipated in thefuture as weight is reduced by the adoption of resin infusionin the construction process”

Brava Marine had made the decision to build their vessel tothe USL Code for commercial vessels with theunderstanding that it would be more expensive and slightlyheavier. They did this to provide their clients with anextremely strong vessel that would maintain a high resalevalue and whose strength would allow the boat to performoffshore to the potential of the design.

The rationale of this decision was demonstrated when Peterand Lorma Brady delivered boat no 2 “Fabil” on its maidendelivery voyage to Mackay in Nth Queensland with newowners Bill and Fay Eccles.

The delivery trip involved some 34 hours of steaming duringwhich they were able to maintain a cruise speed of 16-17knots, even despite a very steep and nasty section of crosscurrent and wind against tide just inside the Percy Group ofIslands.

The Yanmar 4LHA-STP’s performed faultlessly and returneda fuel consumption average of 23 litres an hour each engine@ 16.5 knots over the ground. This was even more pleasinggiven that the boat was fully loaded in cruising trim and thatthey pushed the tide all the way through the Sandy Straitsand had the strong south bound current against them whenoffshore.

Brava Marine Pty Ltd was formed to meet the demand forthe Peter Brady designed and custom built Leopard 1270.The company is a partnership between the Brady andMulherin families with its foundations solidly based onboating and business experience.

The Brady’s have 34 years of boatbuilding and designexperience and have specialised in “displaning” powercatamarans for last 12 years, many of which have beenpowered by Yanmar and equipped with Mase Generatorsets. The Mulherin family have extensive internationalfinancial and business expertise along with a lifetime ofpractical boating experience. Together they have set up astate-of-the-art production facility on the banks of theBrisbane River capable of the expansion required to exportto the USA and other world markets.

Unlike many converted sailing catamarans, the Brava 42was designed from scratch as a powerboat and features araked bow with a classical sweeping sheer to create a dryboat with timeless styling. Full length keels protect thestern gear and allow beaching for inspection or

maintenance. They also provide superb tracking in afollowing sea.

The Brava 42 is available in 2 deck configurations atpresent, the Sports and the walk around side deckClassico. These will be followed by the Sundeck and theCommercial in the near future.

Yanmar engine options between 2 x 55mhp through to 2 x315mhp are available, providing top speeds between 13-26knots. The standard engines recommended are 2 x 190hpYanmar 4LHA-DTP’s which provide an 18 knot cruisespeed using an impressive 44lt per hour combined.

Standard fuel tanks are 650lt, with 1100lt long-range tanksoptional. When fitted with the long-range fuel tanks, theBrava 42 has an impressive range of some 450nm at 18knots and 1,100nm @ 12 knots.

The success of the Brava 42 has been immediate with 9vessels sold before the first boat was launched and afurther 2 (all with Yanmar power) sold at the vessels firstpublic showing at the 2006 Sanctuary Cove InternationalBoat Show. With another 4 confirmed vessel orders inrecent months (again specified with the proven Yanmarpower options) there is no doubt the future for BravaMarine and Yanmar is very exciting indeed.

With 10% more power than the model it replaces andnearly 10kg lighter it is no surprise that many units sinceour first shipment docking in November already have beensold for both new boat and repower projects acrossAustralia. With the diesel fuel prices over 1.80 cents/ litreat most local marinas boat owners will be pleased to readthere is no increase in fuel consumption, in spite of theextra output.

The new 4JH4-HTE meets the 2007 emissionsregulations, compliant with EPA Tier 2, BSO Tier 2 andEU RCD requirements.

Rated 110 MHP (80.9kW) at 3,200 rpm, it is amechanically controlled, turbocharged four-cylinder dieselwith 16 valves, available with a choice of mechanical orhydraulic gears.

Higher power-to-weight ratio, compact dimensions, increased torque and low noise and vibration are amongthe prime benefits, while standard features include a four-valve cylinder head, improved fuel injection system,newly-designed pistons and heat exchanger, new intakemanifold, maintenance-free oil cooler, V-belt safety cover, plus an 80 amp alternator.

Marten 49 fromAzzura MarineAzzura Marine unveiled its first Marten 49 from Azzura Marine’sfacilities in Australia at the Sydney International Boat Show 2006.

The Marten 49 has a price tag of around 1.5M AUD and a buildquality and a standard of finish to impress even the most discerningyacht owner. There is no doubt this vessel was the premier exhibiton the sailing marina in the eyes of the attendees during her firstpublic debut in Australia.

By combining the talents of designers Reichel/Pugh, SPTechnologies design engineers and the experience of MartenYachts, a yacht of outstanding pedigree has been created. Itpossessed race bred performance qualities with a spacious, functional layout. Striking the right balance between performanceand comfort, the Marten 49 reflects the true definition of a cruiser /racer.

The Marten 49 has been built out of the latest advanced compositetechnology using pre-preg carbon. It features a lift keel for improveddraft and performance when racing and reduced draft foraccessibility to shallow ports and bays when cruising. With itssleek, elegant lines, special attention was given to a completelyflush deck.

Marten 49 number four, launched at the 2006 Sydney InternationalBoat Show, is on her way to the south of France where her ownerwill be using the M49 primarily for cruising, but is looking forward toscheduling a few racing events as well.

Number five of the Marten 49’s is destined for a New Zealand ownerand was launched and commissioned in Mid October on SydneyHarbour. She was then sailed to New Zealand to compete in localregattas prior to Christmas.

Marten 49 number six is for European owners and is due to bedelivered late this year, and then shipped to the UK. The owners arenew to yacht racing and have decided the Marten is the perfectdual-purpose yacht to meet their needs.

Number seven of this prestigious range is the first Marten 49 sold toAustralian owners and is a direct result of viewing the Marten 49 atthe Sydney International Boat Show. The prospective ownersfollowed this viewing with a test sail on Sydney Harbour. ThisMarten will be launched in March next year and the owners will beusing the yacht mainly for coastal and harbour cruising.

Securing the sale of the Marten 49 to a Sydney based client hasbeen a welcome development for Jason Rowed, Sales Manager forMarten Yachts.

’Not only is it great to confirm the seventh order, but to have sold itto a Sydney client who will keep it at the CYCA is fantastic for thelocal market.

’This will give Marten Yachts a real breakthrough in Australia withthe ability of showcasing the Marten 49 to people in there own time.

The Marten 49 is a world-class product and we are veryproud to show it off’, Rowed explained.

To date five of the seven Marten 49’s sold have been toEuropean owners so it has proved difficult to showcase theboat in the Southern hemisphere. ‘The future of MartenYachts in Australia and Europe looks very positive and weare excited about what lays ahead,’ Rowed says.

Power Equipment and Gori Propeller are proud to be two ofthe chosen supply partner’s involved in the construction ofMarten Yachts by the Azzura Marine Group.

The Yanmar 75hp sail drive engine package is fittedstandard to the Marten 49 matched with the unique 3 bladeoverdrive propeller from Gori making for a great combinationon this vessel providing excellent performance when motoringcombined with low drag when sailing.

Graham Turner has been using Yanmar G1A engines forsome time now to provide standby power for very remoteRadio Transmitter Towers.

Australia, and particularly North Queensland has somevery isolated communities, and reliable communicationsystems play a sometimes life saving role.

These remote communication towers rely on back upDiesel Generator Power to keep communications open intimes of Cyclone activity and when the normal powersupply fails.

This particular installation is on the top of Mt Yarrabah inNorth Queensland, near Cairns, overlooking Cairns and theQueensland Coast. The engine is a Yanmar4TNE98EG1MR and it is coupled to a Mecce Alte 35 KVAAlternator. The set is housed in a weather proof canopyand mounted on an 800 liter fuel tank base.

Mt Yarrabah is 650 meters above sea level and although itis only 4 kilometers from Cairns, as the Crow fly’s,Graham had to tow the genset 83 klms through very roughand winding terrain to cover this distance.

YANMAR - DEPENDABLE - REMOTE AREA POWERThe last kilometer took over an hour in Low Range 4WD,and the Toyota then had to be towed by a bulldozer thelast 20 meters, almost straight up! THAT’S REMOTE.

Graham has installed five similar Yanmar powered gensetsin other remote areas of North Queensland and is veryhappy with their reliability and parts and service backup. As he said ‘I have to look after these units and do not wantan engine that is going to give trouble, they are too hard toget at”.

Graham has used other Yanmar genset engines forstandby power at Radio Studios through out Queenslandand reports that he is very happy with the Scope of supplyand Yanmars performance.

The Yanmar4TNE98EG1MRprovides standby powerfor these remote RadioTransmitter Towers.

Jim Theodore’s quest for boat building perfection came astep closer with the recent release of his outstanding newmodel, the Theodore Coastal 720 Hardtop, powered by thelegendary 240mhp 4 cylinder Yanmar diesel coupled to thewell proven Mercruiser Bravo 3X duo prop stern drive.

The Theodore 720 was designed with soft lines and has afine entry, deep forefoot, and a variable rise down to 20degrees at the transom. This gives the Coastal 720 theability to carry the weight of a diesel stern drive, while stillbeing able to offer petrol performance.

With the high cost of fuel and total cost of ownership nowbeing a significant factor for customers of craft this size,Theodore Marine clearly hit the target with exactly what thediscerning trailer boat client is asking for with this highquality diesel powered and very capable vessel.

This custom designed craft with a hull developed andtweaked over some 6 years by Jim, demonstrates an abilityto get up onto the plane without effort and truly runs fastand flat.

To help demonstrate the terrific acceptance and feedbackJim has been receiving since the launch of the new Coastal720 series, we are pleased to re-print part of a boat test asfeatured in the SA Waters & Leisure Magazine Issue 42 –winter 2006 edition by renowned marine journalist Mr. DougHogg.

“My first look at the test boat, showed it to be sitting nicelyon its lines at the Port River Marine Service marina, theYanmar diesel giving no hint of undue weight displacement. As with all ‘glass’ work on this boat, the hard top was abrilliant gloss white, both the top and underside.

The 230hp Yanmar 4LHA-STZP started immediately andonce out of the restricted area of the Port River, the Hardtopran with a beautiful flat wake up to a cruising speed of 25.7knots.

The S.S wheel and hydraulic steering was feather-light totouch and she ran briskly up to 32 knots at 3,570 rpm, prettyimpressive for a 4-cylinder diesel running with five largeadults onboard!”

Sales interest following recent boat shows anddemonstration days has been very encouraging for Jim andhis team at Theodore Marine with the factory currently busyfilling orders in time for Christmas deliveries. Given Jim’sdesire to only use quality components together with hisflexibility in meeting his client power and speedexpectations, Yanmar is ideally positioned to meet his futurepower needs with their comprehensive range of proven andwell accepted mechanical controlled and electroniccontrolled diesel sterndrive models ranging from 160 to 315mhp.

Steve Parsons (Power Equipment’sSales Engineer for VIC, SA, TAS)reports that in future editions ofPower News, he looks forward toproviding a full report on the nexthull deliveries from TheodoreMarine, featuring both the new 6BY–260Z engine model together withthe tried and proven market leading6LPA series.

The project to create a television commercial for Yanmar industrialengines began with Power Equipment’s Mike Edwards delivering aconcise brief. The ad was to run on the Imparja television network(a signal that reaches the vast interior of Australia), the ad was tofeature stalwart Yanmar customer Bruce Moreton and for credibility,it had to be shot on location in central Australia.

Bruce Moreton (pictured left) is the owner of three vast cattlestations. The Victory Downs Station occupies a vast tract of land inexcess of 10,000 square miles. Located south of Alice Springs,Victory Downs Station is close to the South Australian border.

Across the Victory Downs Station a string of Yanmar TF enginesdrive bore pumps, delivering water from underground wells to thesurface.

Out here the Yanmar engines are fuelled up and then runcontinuously until the fuel tank is empty. A station hand has thetask of doing a bore pump run every week filling up empty fueltanks, re-starting the Yanmar diesel engines then driving off to thenext bore to repeat the task.

It’s a tough environment but one which lends itself to a televisioncommercial with genuine impact.

“Out at Victory Downs there’s no room for puff or frills,” said BobCarter of Connexion, the agency responsible for the Yanmartelevision commercial.

“While I had some initial reservations about using a customer forthe Yanmar ad, Mike’s judgement and decision was 100% correct.Bruce Moreton is the archetypical outback station owner and everyother station owner contemplating an engine for their station couldreadily identify with Bruce.”

Of course prior to shooting any ad, there is a plenty of preparationto be undertaken before getting to a location. The script needs tobe written and approved by the client. Then there are the logisticalissues of finding and organising a film crew in the middle ofAustralia.

Fortunately the ad was shot in mid August, a time of year when theclimate in central Australia is most kind. At night the temperaturedrops to zero Celsius and by day the thermometer nudges the midto high twenties.

Despite the isolation, getting on location was reasonably straightforward. Qantas flights took us to Alice Springs arriving the dayprior to the shoot. The film crew assembled and were briefed onthe task that lay ahead.

Early on the morning of the shoot the team assembled at AliceSprings airport where a commercial charter flight took the groupsouth to Victory Downs Station. Approaching the destination, thefeatures of Kulgera Roadhouse began to emerge from alandscape totally devoid of signs of habitation… thank goodnessfor GPS!

Landing on the dirt airstrip about an hour later the Yanmar partyand film crew were warmly greeted by Bruce and his station handsthen ferried from the airstrip onto the Victory Downs Station.

Here Bruce Moreton had the presence of mind to set up a brandnew Yanmar TNE engine with a bore pump in a contrived setting soas to take advantage of the surrounding landscape. Soon thetripod and camera were set up, the sound checks done and Bruce

was for the first time reading through his script.

Gingerly at first, the words flowed from the ‘talent’ as Bruce ranthrough his opening line. “Out here I depend on this bore to keepmy cattle alive.” Then again, and again and again. Over and overdozens of times with the camera rolling capturing the setting in tighton the talent, then framed a little further away and finally inpanorama.

With the first sentence done, it was time to move to the next take.Again more repetitious lines spruiked with varying inflections, sometimes rolling off the tongue like a seasoned veteran actor, other times bumbled like anyone else who gets tongue tied whenrepeating the same lines over and again.

Finally with all the pieces to camera completed, it was time to shootthe scene setters. This is truly amazing country and the crew weregiven licence to shoot creatively to gather the spirit of the Australianoutback and communicate the vastness and isolation of the Yanmarwork environment.

Then it was on to the cattle yards where Bruce Moreton had herdedup 100 or so head of cattle for the shoot. With water troughs in theyards, a big holding water tank above ground and cattle beingloaded into a road train, more vision was captured on tape to beedited in post production.

“Given the considerable effort to get on location for this shoot, I wasparticularly mindful that we had to get the shoot 100% right on theday,” Bob Carter said. “We couldn’t afford to miss something ormess up any aspect of the shoot as going back on location tocorrect an error was definitely not an option.”

Leaving the property for a very late lunch at Kulgera Roadhouse, thecrew had about 1½ hours of wild footage in the can. An hour and ahalf of vision to make a 30 second ad!

Having said our goodbyes and expressed sincere appreciation forthe time and effort in helping us with the ad shoot, it was back onboard the twin engine light plane for the trip back to Alice Springs toultimately return to our capital cities in the big smoke the followingday.

Selecting the best frames for the ad takes time, perseverance andpatience in the post production suite. Again the time needed to turnout a 30 second ad in a dark edit suite is out of proportion with theduration of the end product. Many hours are needed to record thevoiceover in the sound studio, then the best grabs of vision andaudio are mixed and blended with one another in the edit suite andfinally the logos and type are superimposed over the vision.

About a fortnight after being on location, the end product of all thework is presented to the client to view and to pass judgement. Andit took just 30 seconds for Mike Edwards to give the production hisheartfelt seal of approval.

“We went into the Yanmar project with some trepidation given thenumber of unknown factors that we had to deal with,” Bob Cartersaid. “But the concerns were unfounded as we had a good brieffrom Mike and went through some thorough preparation. The finaloutcome is an ad of which everyone can be very proud.”

The Yanmar commercial has now hada solid viewing across the Imparja networkand from all accounts it has been both verywell received and most importantlyresponsible for increased sales of Yanmarin the viewing area.

OVER IN THE WEST YANMAR’S D

“WETTA IZ BETTA” -

If you don’t mind a bit of the effervescent Indian Ocean on you, you’ll have a ball. Cooling and soothing in the summer, veryrefreshing in the winter. There’s nothing like surfing the winternortherly swells on a 40 footer at 40 knots in safety and style.

Jim Virtue is the principal of West Coast Jet in WA. Jim likes toget the best out of his vessel and spares no expense to ensurehis clients get their money’s worth when travelling with WestJetin the Cockburn Sound off Fremantle.

Graham Dearle (Power Equipment’s WA Marine Sales Manager)first met Jim when Jim was a professional skipper for a localRottnest Island Ferry Service early in 2000. At this stageGraham had just returned from working in the charter boatindustry in the Qld Whitsunday Islands and was commutingeach day to work on Rottnest Island.

Not long after their meeting, Graham joined Power Equipmentand Jim started his own company to run Extreme Tours WA.Jim’s boat “Okiedokie” was originally powered by two 250HPoutboards which proved to be costly to operate both in terms offuel and maintenance costs and with down time anddisappointed clients. Jim subsequently re-powered the vesselwith a pair of 300hp Yanmar 6LPA-STZP’s complete with theproven Mercruiser Bravo 2X drive.

Okiedokie’s performance improved greatly but what reallybrought a smile to Jim’s face (and his accountant) was thesubsequent decrease in downtime and lower fuel andmaintenance costs. After about 800 hours of trouble free boatingwith the new 300hp Yanmar / Bravo 2X combination, Jim, in hisstrive to achieve even lower operation costs and a better ride forhis valued clients, decided that water jet propulsion was the wayto go. Again Graham was consulted over a coffee on thepicturesque Fremantle waterfront between trips, and the variousoptions available were discussed.

Graham, based on the well proven results in many other lightcommercial and pleasure craft applications in his territory, presented Twin Yanmar 420hp model 6LY2A-STPengines withZF220 gearboxes and a Hamilton HJ291 water jet package forJim’s consideration. Jim subsequently decided to go ahead with

the changeover and took the opportunity to completely re-fitand re-spray in the familiar yellow color that Okiedokie isrenowned for.

Immediately upon re-commissioning, Jim’s decision to againgo with Yanmar was vindicated. The refitted vessel achievedmore than Jim had ever expected. The added horsepowercombined with the new water jets provided exactly what hisclients love - great maneuverability, tons of thrust for rapidacceleration and the ability to perform spins much greaterthan ever able to be achieved with the previous propulsionsystems fitted. At 7.5 tonne full displacement, Okiedokieachieves over 40 knots with a combined engine fuel rate of 55litres per hour, something that really pleases Jim as it waslower than he had calculated.

With the vessel now in daily service for several months, weare again pleased to say that Westcoast Jet is a verysatisfied “two time” Yanmar owner and operator.Congratulations to Jim and all at Westcoast Jet from thePower Equipment team on your exciting WA tourism venture. We are pleased to be your chosen horsepower provider andwish you much success in the future.

Morgan & Co is legendary in the WApearling industry.

Dick and son Andy Morgan have been atthe leading edge of pearl farmingtechnology for a very long time.

Morgan’s Pearl farms are located in theMontebello Islands, some 120kms northof Exmouth and 60kms West of Onslow. To help put the remoteness intoperspective for our overseas, readersExmouth is approx 14 hours by roadtransport from our Fremantle office.

It goes without saying that Dick and Andyrequire reliability, performance andeconomy as mandatory given the veryremote location and high duty cycle oftheir marine diesel engines.

Long term readers of Power News willrecall a previous story we did on MorganPearl’s in Issue 23 (April 2004) where weprofiled the success of the YanmarCommercial engine model 6CHM-UTE intheir cleaning fleet. At this stage Morgan’swere still evaluating the performance ofthe first set of engines, which werepurchased from Graham Dearle (WAMarine Sales Manager) in our Fremantleoffice in July 2002.

Move forward some 2.5 years and todayMorgan Pearl has now repowered all oftheir 5 Pearl cleaning vessels with Twininstallations of the 280hp 6CHM-UTEengines. In the words of Director AndyMorgan “ the reliability of these Yanmarunits and cost of ownership has beennothing else but outstanding and a far cryfrom the IVECO power plants which thesevessels were originally fitted with”

As Andy moved over and handed thedirection of the company to Mark

Longhurst the new CEO of about 12months, we had the Anchor vessel “ Fast 4”re-power opportunity presented to us byMark.

Graham offered the Yanmar model 6CXM-GTYE a 400hp @ 2700rpm engine packagefor their consideration to replace a pair ofIVECO SRM 330hp engines, the last of theIVECO’s in the fleet.

Following installation by the Morgan Pearl’sengineering team Graham Dearle and ourFremantle based service engineer JohnHough headed to Exmouth to documentand perform the Power Equipment standardengine operation check in line with therequirements for all new YanmarCommercial engine installations.

With ZF301C gearboxes and 292 HamiltonJets coupled to the 6CXM-GTYE “Fast 4”performed above expectations andimpressed all aboard for the maidenvoyage. With Andy in his ever-presentplayful mood on the helm and all of thesupport crew hanging on for their lives, Fast4 exceeded an estimated speed over theground at 25 knots.

“Fast 4” is the workhorse / tug boat of theMorgan Pearl fleet and has not only theresponsibility of moving and positioning allthe moorings and anchors used throughoutthe Pearl farm operations but also mustalso be capable of covering passagesquickly given the cyclonic conditions in thewet season. Fast 4 Is also involved not onlyin transporting the tons of Pearl shell, butcarries fuel to support other vessels in theirfleet, hence reliability of this vessel isabsolutely critical to their daily operations.

With some 7.413 litres of displacement anda conservative continuous output rating ofonly 360hp @ 2600rpm, the Yanmar 6CX-

GTYE Commercial engine has not onlythe specifications, but also the provenhistory in many similar demandingapplications to ensure it again willexceed the expectations of Morgan andCo Pearl’s.

Yanmar commercial engine productcertainly has the reputation of not beingthe cheapest engine brand on theAustralian market but with the provenpedigree and great results beingachieved owners of this product are quickto point out that the total life cost ofownership with a Yanmar commercialengine far outweighs the small purchasecost premium.

With standard features such as longservice intervals, low fuel consumptionand cylinder block inspection hatches (tofascilitate scheduled maintenance) theYanmar range of commercial enginescertainly has an exciting future amongstdiscerning operators of commercial crafton our waterways.

Morgan & Co and Yanmar Diesel – Nodoubt a winning partnership that isensured of a exciting future!

MMMMMAAAAASE TIMESE TIMESE TIMESE TIMESE TIMES TWS TWS TWS TWS TWO!O!O!O!O!Back in April of this year the “Destiny Abalone Group” based out of Port Lincoln in SouthAustralia, decided that one of their vessels, the “Destiny Lady” was in urgent need of amajor refit. Apart from replacing the old engines with new Yanmar 6LY2A-STP’s andTwin Disc MG-5061-A transmissions, the Destiny Group were also keen to install aGen-Set in order to help them out with their day to day operations.

Based on their power requirements, the MASE IS 5.0 was chosen for the task at hand. This particular unit is powered by the Yanmar L100AE series engine and is coupled to aMacc-Alte 240-Volt Alternator. The unit also features the patented water to air intercoolerwhich helps to reduce the temperature of the air flow inside the sound proof box. Theintercooler system provides an efficacious cooling of the alternator and the optimaltemperature for the best performance and reliability of the Gen-Set, regardless of itsonboard location and room temperature. The other advantage of this recirculationsystem is that no hot air is expelled from Gen-Set back into the engine room.

The compactness and light weight of this unit make it also ideal for use in yachts and smallervessels where extended cruising journeys are conducted. It measures in at 675mm in length,468mm in width, and 565mm in height and weighs in at just 130 Kgs.

Like the rest of the MASE range, the MASE IS 5.0 also features one side servicing for easeof access to the fuel and oil filters as well as the standard factory supplied sump pump. Theunit is mounted on the patented eight (8) mount double anti-vibration dampening system. Thealternator is a synchronous, 2 pole, brushless self-exciting type and also features an epoxyresin coated rotor and stator for added durability against the harsh marine environment. Italso meets “H” class insulation requirements.

In the seven (7) months that the “Destiny Group” have had the MASE IS 5.0 in service, it has performed flawlessly and helpedthem in being able to be more efficient in their day to day operations. Its performance has been so good that they have just recently ordered a second unit for one of their other vessels.

Powderly’s Pumping and Irrigation Services located inthe town of Young in southern N.S.W. has recentlytaken delivery and installed one of Power Equipment’scustom built Submersible Bore Pump Generatorspowered by the new TNV series diesel engines.

The TNV series engine, which complies with the strictUSA and European E.P.A. tier 2 regulations willeventually replace the tried and tested TNE seriesdiesel in Australia. Over the last 10 years the TNErange has built an enviable reputation in the powergeneration and irrigation industries for its ruggedreliability and extremely low fuel consumption.

The bore pump, a Grundfos SP8A-50, 3 phase, 7.5kwunit was selected by Powderly’s to irrigate 20hectares of grapes at ‘Prunevale”, a 50 hectareproperty 12km to the south east of Young. PowerEquipment’s technical team calculated that to startand run the pump a 4TNV88-GGE engine fitted with a30kva alternator would be required. Power Equipmentpioneered this submersible pump generator market bymatching an oversize alternator to a smaller engine, thus preventing bore glazing from low loading.

As a long time supporter of Yanmar products JohnPowderly had no hesitation at offering the Yanmargenerator to his customer.

The generator is mounted on a rugged steel base andis fitted with full engine protection along with acountdown timer and high and low pump pressureprotection.

The new style TNV series engines are noticeablyquieter than the TNE engines due to cylinder blocknoise reduction and a muffler system that optimises

volume and sound isolation material.

At the time of writing this story the generator wasreturning a very acceptable 3 litre of fuel per hourand has been mounted onto a concrete pad in ashed and is connected to the pump through a setof contactors that trip if low voltage is detected toprevent to both the pump and the alternator.

All in all a very neat setup that will give Prunevalea long and trouble free life.

Powderly’s Pumping choose thenew Yanmar TNV Series

Over the last 10 years the TNErange has built an enviablereputation in the power generationand irrigation industries for itsrugged reliability and extremely lowfuel consumption.

The new BY series of shaft drive and stern drive diesels, ranging from 150MHP to 260MHP, are now in full productionto meet solid demand. Lower down the power range, therecently introduced 110MHP 4HJ4-HTE has becomeestablished quickly, with its order book strong.

Power News is bought to you by:

As the sun starts setting on 2006 and l reflecton events that shaped the year, it is with pride

and pleasure that so many achievements and first’sstand out, however 2006 will be particularly remembered

as a year of strong demand and booming growth. That said, whatis particularly gratifying to me is the depth of support shown byour staff along with improvements to our systems, without whichwe could not have kept pace with the shear volume of businessbeing brought through the door by our sales department.

Whilst a focus towards constant improvement is essential to thesuccess of every business, without all of the prior work done inthis area we simply could not have kept pace with the pressurescreated by the recent demand, or indeed been able to satisfy ourvery important customer base in an accurate and timely manner. To put this into some sort of perspective, we are currently runningby value 26% above the corresponding period for the prior year, and engine numbers are up by some 21%, which I’m sure everybodywould appreciate is one hell of an increase! However even withthe dedicated efforts directed towards continuous improvementsto systems and procedures, we could not have coped with suchan increase in demand without our experienced, dedicated andstable work force for which there is absolutely no substitute.

Earlier this year Power News celebrated its 10th birthday, andthis, the 30th Edition also represents another milestoneachievement.

As I reflected on just some of the highlights from 2006, it onlyserved to reinforce to me the myriad number of projects andchallenge’s that we worked through which will no doubt accountfor the extra grey hair or two around the company.MARINE DIVISION.New product introductions during 2006:Pleasureboat Engines.

In addition to this large number of new engines, we also receivedour first deliveries of Yanmar (Kanzaki) transmissions coupled toBY and 6LY3 Series engines.

POWER PRODUCTS DIVISIONThis division commenced the roll out of Yanmar’snew TNV Series 2,3 & 4 cylinder vertical strokewater cooled industrial diesel engines, whichalong with the existing TNE Series Engines, received unprecedented demand from existing and newcustomers. This division is also making preparation’s for acomplete new Yanmar range of TNE/TNV Series powered landbased generator sets due for release here in Australia aroundthe end of the 1st Quarter 2007 (Pictured bottom left).

Needless to say, the successful market launch of all of thesenew products doesn’t magically happen; it encompasses allaspects of the company from Purchasing and Operations, toSales, Marketing, Engineering and Spare Parts. It would be unfairto say that this hasn’t been a big challenge for all staff given thevolume of business being transacted on one hand, combinedwith the significant number of new model introductions; whilston the other, the sheer complexities and attention to detailrequired at each step in the journey to ensure a smooth andseamless customer order execution. That said, as the article onthe prior page will attest, for the latest reporting period from Jan-June ’06, Yanmar diesel engines continue to be a major force inthe Australian marketplace, not only being by volume the outright largest selling brand of diesel engine, but also brand leaderin many individual market segments including No1 in the veryimportant Marine Pleasureboat Engine category between 0-1000kW, a result strongly aided by the outstanding results beingachieved in the marine market by our Branch in Western Australia. However the collective results are a function of a significantnumber of both Marine and Industrial “landmark” orders beingreceived from all parts of the country.

The company represented Yanmar at a record number ofBoatshows, Agricultural Field Days and Trade Shows, andcontinued its Sponsorship arrangements with a number of highprofile Boating Clubs.

As you would have also noticed in this Edition, our two otherkey product lines, Gori Propellers from Denmark and Mase MarineGensets from Italy, continue to go from strength to strength, which was further enhanced by reciprocal staff visits with bothcompanies during the year.

We have also just submitted our Planning Permit for theconstruction of our new Head Office facility, and our constructionteam is now moving into the detail design part of this project, sowe will have an exciting year ahead in 2007 as we plan ourrelocation, as well as capitalize on the opportunities that thisraft of new product lines offer.

Let me close by wishing our Customers, Suppliers and Staff avery Safe and Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year.
