Power recruitment – key trends
The UK’s power industry is changing. According to analysts, for the first time ever, wind power generated more electricity than coal power in 2016. The grid is changing with thousands of smaller sites joining the bigger, centralised power stations, this is as a result of the shift towards renewable energy, the growth in windfarms; not to mention the closure of three major coal stations last year including the last remaining coal plant in Scotland.
There are many exciting projects on the horizon; Hinkley Point C, Dogger Bank Offshore Windfarm, East Anglia One Offshore Windfarm, North West Coast Connection and the Moray Firth subsea cable and offshore renewable projects. It’s an exciting time for anyone working in the power sector.
There are some significant trends and changes that are increasing the demand and work location for skilled talent within the power sector. Local and regional reinforcement work on local distribution networks is increasing the need for labour and resources right across the UK. Remote and coastal schemes such as Beatrice, East Anglia One, Galloper, North West Coast Connection and Hinkley Point will displace resources from the traditional energy heartlands of London, Birmingham and Glasgow. Power personnel are being incentivised to move away from working on National Grid projects to move towards unregulated works such as NEMO and Eleclink. Also, AMP6 investment in water specific project is causing a drain from multi utility works. All these changes are making it imperative for clients to have strong, long term relationships with talent pools to ensure they have the right workforce in place to deliver their projects.
For power candidates and clients, the following information will enable you to benchmark the salaries and benefits you are offering or receiving. The data is from our in house salary survey, My Salary Tool, which contains salary and benefit information from over 15,000 candidates currently working in the engineering and construction industries.
The data in this report is from salary data from surveys completed by power candidates.
