DOWNSTREAM FACILITY CABLES

VFD Cables

Nexans AmerCable VFD Cables are speciallyengineered to provide 100% containment of EMIemissions and provide longer cable life in VFD applications.

Nexans AmerCable VFD cables feature symmetrical insulated groundconductors that reduce inducedvoltage imbalances and carrycommon mode noise back to the drive.

Nexans AmerCable’s high strandcount conductors and braid shielddesign is much more flexible, easier to install and more resistant tovibration than Type MC cable.

Available in 5 constructions.

See pages 16-20

CIR® (Crush & Impact Resistant)CIR is a next-generation cable designed to replaceolder-technology cables like Type MC. CIR has beensuccessfully used globally since 2002 for mission-critical equipment operating in harsh environments.

CIR passes the same crush and impact testingrequired by UL 2225 for Type MC-HL without theuse of external armoring.

CIR cables are GEXOL® insulated which provides alower dielectric constant, allowing longer VFDoutput cable lengths.

Made in America

Highly flexible, small bend radius, reduced tray fill and impervious towater and air.

UL Listed as Type TC-ER (Standard CIR) – suitable for avariety of uses, including those wheretray cables are not practical or cost-prohibitive.

UL Listed as Type TC-ER-HL (Arctic Grade CIR) – suitable for a variety of uses in Class 1, Div 1 andZone 1 environments including thosewhere tray cables are not practical orcost-prohibitive. (Cables up to 1” indiameter)

CIR® (CRUSH & IMPACT RESISTANT) VFD POWERCABLE UL LISTED AS TYPE TC-ERThree Conductor • Gexol® Insulated • 2kV • Rated 90°C

APPLICATIONA flexible, braid and foil shielded, 2kV powercable specifically engineered for use in variablefrequency AC motor drive (VFD) applications.

FEATURESn Specially engineered cable design produces alonger cable life in VFD applications.

n Overall braid plus foil shield is engineered with 100% coverage and a surface transferimpedance <50 milliohms at 10MHz tocontain EMI.

n Symmetrical insulated ground conductorsreduce induced voltage imbalances and carrycommon mode noise back to the drive.

n High strand count conductors and braid shield design is much more flexible, easier to install and more resistant to vibration than Type MC cable.

n Gexol’s lower dielectric constant (standard XLPEs,EPRs and other Type RHW insulation materialshave higher dielectric constants) reduces reflectedwave peak voltage magnitudes. This allows forlonger output cable distances and minimizes theeffect of high frequency noise induced into theplant ground system.

n 2kV insulation thickness is used to resist thepotential 2-3x reflected voltages experienced in600V VFD applications.

n Passes the same stringent crush and impacttesting required by UL 2225 for Type MC-HL

High strand count conductors and braid shield design is much more flexible, easier to install and more resistant to vibration than Type MC cable.

Gexol’s lower dielectric constant (standard XLPEs,EPRs and other Type RHW insulation materialshave higher dielectric constants) reduces reflectedwave peak voltage magnitudes. This allows forlonger output cable distances and minimizes theeffect of high frequency noise induced into theplant ground system.

2kV insulation thickness resists the repetitive 2x voltage spikes from 600V VFDs and reducesdrive over current trip problems due to cablecharging current.

Passes the same stringent crush and impact testing required by UL 2225 for Type MC-HL

Gas & vapor tight – impervious to water and air Smaller bend radius (up to 40% smaller) than Type MC

Reduced tray fill compared to Type MC Considerably more flexible than Type MC Reduced installation time and cost Glands cost up to 50% less

CABLE SELECTION GUIDE FOR VFD APPLICATIONS

The circuit of a typical voltage source PWM drive is shown in Figure 1. Each part of the equipment is bondedto the safety earth system to ensure personnel safety if faults occur.

All parts have capacitance to ground shown by:

• CM for the motor windings.

• CC1 and CC2 for the power converter circuits.

• CT for the transformer’s secondarywinding to the transformers’ screen.

The IGBT switches are in constant operation at high frequency and this produces an inverter output voltage with a PWM wave shape as shown by the voltage V1(Figure 1).

This IGBT switches also cause a motor line to ground voltage V2 (Figure 1), normally called a common mode voltage.

The common mode voltages cause short high-frequency pulses of common modecurrent to flow in the safety earthcircuits, shown by currents I1 and I2 (Figure 1), unless the design includes cable features to stop this from happening.

It is essential that the common mode currents return to the inverter without causing EMC - EMI problems in other equipment, and this means that the common mode currents I1 and I2 must not flow in the safety earthing system.

For the motor, this is achieved by connecting a set of wires from the motor to the inverter that run withthe main power cables. These are called symmetrical grounding conductors, see Figure 2. These conductors have avery low impedance compared with the other return path via the safety earthing system.

The three symmetrical grounding conductors and overall shields are connected as shown in Figure 3. This 360° connection is essential.

The common mode currents I1 and I2 now flow in the symmetrical grounding conductors. This happens because the symmetricalgrounding conductors are close to the power conductors givinga low impedance route for the currents I1 and I2 compared withthe safety earthing system. As I1 and I2 flow near the power conductors this avoids creating external EMC - EMI problems.

If symmetrical grounding conductors and an overall EMIshield are not used, EMC - EMI problems are very likely to occur.

For cables used with voltage source PWM drives, a number of features are required to ensure correct operation, avoid overheating and achieve longer service life.

The essential features of a mediumvoltage cable for PWM drives are :

• Insulation designed to withstandthe transients produced by the PWM

• Insulation with a dielectric constant no greater than 3.0 to minimize capacitance

• Voltage rating of 3x the operating voltage to prevent corona

• Three symmetrical grounding conductors. Some cables only have one grounding conductor. This is not acceptable as it produces circulating currents in the earth system

• Extremely fine strands to carry the harmonic currents without overheating (i.e. the inductance of fine stranded conductors is less than 7, 19, 37 strand conductors)

• Overall shield to stop the radiation of voltage EMI fields

• Correct termination at both ends

• Semi-conducting shield around each insulation layer (MMV only)

• Metallic layer around each semi-conducting shield to earth the semi-conducting shield(MMV only)

TYPE MMV-VFDPOWER CABLE (MV-105)Three Conductor: 8kV –15kV • 133% Insulation Level • Rated 90°C

APPLICATIONSA flexible, braid and foil shielded, power cable specifically engineered for use in medium voltage variable frequency AC drive (VFD) applications.

FEATURESn Flexible stranded conductors andbraided shields. Suitable for applications involving repeated flexing and high vibration.

n Small minimum bending radius (8x OD) for easy installation.

n Insulation has a very low dielectricconstant. This allows for longeroutput cable distances andminimizes common mode current.

n Overall braid plus foil shield is engineered with 100% coverage anda surface transfer impedance <50milliohms at 10MHz to contain EMI.

n Symmetrical insulated ground conductors reduce induced voltageimbalances and carry common mode noise back to the drive.

n High strand count conductors andbraid shield design is much more flexible, easier to install and moreresistant to vibration than Type MC cable.

n Severe cold durability: exceeds CSA cold bend/cold impact (-40˚C/-35˚C).

Conductors (3)Soft annealed flexible strandedtinned copper per IEEE 1580 Table 11.

Conductor ShieldA combination of semi-conducting tape and extrudedthermosetting semi-conducting material meeting UL1072.

EMI ShieldOverall tinned copper braid plus aluminum/polyester tape provides 100% coverage.

JacketA black, arctic grade, flame retardant, oil, abrasion, chemical and sunlight resistant thermosetting compound meeting UL 1072. This jacket allows for isolation between the insulation shields and overall shield. Shields can then be terminated on opposite ends tominimize circulating currents.

Sheath (optional)A black, arctic grade, flame retardant, oil, abrasion, chemical and sunlight resistant thermosetting compound meeting UL 1072.Colored jackets for signifying different voltage levels are also available on specialrequest (orange = 8kV and red = 15kV).

CORFLEX® PULLING INSTRUCTIONSCertain installations require thepulling of CORFLEX® into ducts ortrays. These installations requirecareful planning and execution. The following provides informationon how to calculate tensionsdeveloped during pulling andwhat precautions to take to prevent damage to the cable.

Pulling TensionThe maximum tension applied to acable is limited to prevent damageor distortion of cable componentswhich could reduce the life orreliability of the cable. The methodof pulling is significant in thatdifferent methods will resultin different stresses on critical cablecomponents for the same overalltension. Nexans AmerCablerecommends that CORFLEX MC-HLInstrumentation 600V cables arepulled by means of the aluminumsheath and jacket with a grip applied over the jacketed core, sheath and overall jacket. All otherCORFLEX cable types described in this catalog should be pulled by means of the conductors, aided with a grip over the outeraluminum sheath. The conductorsand the sheath must be pulledtogether. Maximum allowablepulling tensions for CORFLEX cablesshould never exceed the valuesshown in pulling tension table.

Calculating Pulling TensionsThe tension developed in anyStraight Section of duct iscalculated as:

T = L x W x f lbf whereL = section length (feet)W = cable weight per unit length

(lb/foot)f = coefficient of dynamic friction

The tension developed in any Bend is calculated as:T = T1 x efa lbf whereT1 = tension at bend entrance (lbf)e = base of natural logarithms

(2.71828)f = coefficient of dynamic frictiona = angle of bend (radians)or efa is given in the following tablefor common conditions:BendAngle f=0.15 f=0.30 f=0.35 f=0.40

30° 1.08 1.17 1.20 1.2345° 1.13 1.27 1.32 1.3760° 1.17 1.37 1.44 1.5290° 1.27 1.60 1.73 1.88

Coefficients of dynamic friction withlubricant are given in the followingtable for common duct and cablejacket materials. These coefficientscan be used for calculation oftensions.

CoefficientDuct Type Cable Jacket of Friction

PVC PVC 0.50PE PVC 0.30Fiber PVC 0.40

Asbestos Cement PVC 0.70

Considerations must be given toSide Wall Bearing Pressure (SWBP)when pulling CORFLEX through abend. The SWBP is calculated asfollows:

For CORFLEX, Nexans AmerCablerecommends a maximum SWBPof 500 pounds force/foot. Duringinstallation of the CORFLEX cable, itis recommended that the bend radiibe as noted in thecable descriptions.

Pulling in DuctIt is extremely important for thesuccess of any pull in duct to useapproved lubricants. Lubricants mustbe compatible with the cable jacketand duct material. Lubricating thepulling rope will decrease the tensionon the pulling equipment and moreimportantly will reduce the risk ofdamage to the inside of the ductwhich in turn can damage the cable. When designing the duct layout, it is suggested that the bends beconcentrated near the end fromwhich the cable is to be pulled. Thispractice will result in lower tensions. In some cases, the tensions resultingfrom alternative directions should be calculated.

Pulling in Trays & TrenchesFor the installation of CORFLEX intrays, rollers are normally used.Using well lubricated rollers and long radius sheaves at bends willresult in a lower coefficient of friction when compared to duct. A coefficient of friction of 0.15 canbe used when calculating pullingtension using rollers. For long pullswith bends it may be necessary toinstall assist pullers before the bends

to reduce the tension on thecable entering a bend andreducing the risk of damage from excessive SWBP.

The recommendations given aboveare intended to cover a wide varietyof pulling conditions. It is possible, under ideal conditions, and withexperienced supervision, to exceedthese limits.

For further guidance, see IEEE Paper84 T & D 365-3, orcontact Nexans AmerCable.
