POWER CABLES – AS PER BS:6346:1989

POWER CABLES – IS: 1554

PVC Insulated LT Power Cables to IS: 1554 Part 1

Conductor

Copper conductors are made from high conductivity Copper rods of 8 mm diameter. The rod is drawn to required sizes for the construction of conductors of different areas of cross section conforming to IS:8130-1984. Conductors for Power cables with cross sectional area have following configuration1. Conductors below 6 sq.mm are either solid circular or stranded circular (non-compact) conforming to Table 1Class 1 or Table 2 Class 2 of IS:8130-1984.2. Conductors of 10 sq.mm and 16 sq.mm are stranded circular (non-compact)3. Conductors of 25 sq.mm and above are - stranded compact circular for single core unarmoured and armoured     & shaped conductors for multicore unarmoured and armouredHowever, the construction of stranded non-compact conductors can also be made against customer specification.

Insulation

PVC Compound is insulated over conductor by extrusion process with required thickness of insulation and conforms to IS: 1554 (Part-1)-1988 for PVC insulated cables. PVC insulation, is either of general purpose 'type A' PVC compound, suitable for a maximum continuous conductor operating temperature of 70°C, or of Heat resistant 'type C' PVC Compound, suitable for a maximum continuous conductor operating temperature of 85"C conforming to requirements of IS:5831-1984. Special types of PVC insulation suitable for 105°C and FRLS sheath can also be offered against customer requirement.

Identification of core colours:

No. of cores   Identification

1   Red, Black, Yellow, Blue, or Natural (Non-pigmented)

2   Red and Black

3   Red, Yellow and Blue  Red, Yellow, Blue and Black

4   Red, Yellow, Blue and Black

Page 2: Power Cables

Laying up

Cores are laid up with right hand lay in the outermost layer in the sequence of above core colours. Interstices, if necessary, are covered with non hygroscopic fillers and covered with a binder tape for compactness and to maintain reasonably round shape.

Inner sheath

All multi-core cables have either extruded PVC inner sheath or thermoplastic wrapped inner sheath, which is compatible to insulation material and removable without any damage to insulation.Single core cable have no inner sheath.

Armouring

Single core cables for use on a.c systems, are armoured with single layer of nonmagnetic (Aluminium) material. Multi-core armoured cables have either single layer of Galvanized Steel wire Armour or Galvanised steel formed wire (earlier steel strip) applied over inner sheath with left hand lay. Galvanised steel wires and / or formed wires (earlier called strip) conform to IS:3975-1998.

Outer sheath

For Cables with general purpose PVC insulation, Sheaths are extruded with Black PVC compound of type ST1 and for cables with heat resistant PVC insulation, sheaths are extruded with Black PVC compound of Type ST2 conforming to the requirements of IS:5831-1984.

PVC outer sheath with improved fire performance as per Category Cl and C2 conforming to the requirements of IS:5831-1984 are available against specific requirement.

Outer sheath is embossed 1 marked with information’s required by the relevant standard 1 customer requirement.

Packing, storage and handling

Cables for power supplies and control panel wirings are always packed in appropriate sizes of strong and seasoned wooden drums designed to withstand long distance transit and preservation in stores.

Power cables of all sizes of single core, Power cables of rnuiti-core upto 120 sq.mm are packed in standard lengths of 500 metre 5% and Power cables of multi-cores of 150 sq.mm and above are packed in standard lengths of 250 metre 5% .

It is advised that drums are always to be stored in concrete floors to avoid sinking in mud and damages or deterioration of drum flanges and shall not be stored on its flanges horizontal to ground. Drums are designed for easy handling when transported by cranes or mounted on cable drum wheels for laying. Cables in drums shall be stored away from boilers and furnaces.

Customer orientation

POWER CABLES – AS PER BS:6346:1989

PVC INSULATED ARMOURED / UNARMOURED CABLES TO BS 6346:1989

ConductorCopper conductors are made from high conductivity Copper rods of 8 mm diameter. The rod is drawn to required sizes for

the construction of conductors of different areas of cross section conforming to SS 6360.

Page 9: Power Cables

Conductors for Power cables with cross sectional area up to 16 sq.mm are either solid circular or stranded circular (non-compact) conforming to Table 1 Class 1 or Table 2 Class 2 of SS 6360. Conductors for Power Cables with cross sectional

area 25 sq.mm. and above are stranded shaped conforming to Table 2 Class 2 of BS:6360.

Insulation PVC Compound is insulated over conductor by extrusion process with required thickness of insulation and conforms to

BS:6346:1989.

PVC insulation, is of type TI 1 PVC compound conforming to BS 6746:1990, suitable for a continuous conductor operating temperature not exceeding 70°C.

Identification of core colours:

Laying up

Cores are laid up with right hand lay in the outermost layer in the sequence of above core colours. Interstices, if necessary, are covered with non hygroscopic fillers and covered with a binder tape for compactness and to maintain reasonably round

shape.

Bedding

All multi-core cables of nominal area less than 10 sq.mm have extruded bedding. Cables having nominal area 10 sq.mm and above have either extruded PVC bedding or 2 or more layers of PVC or other synthetic tape, which is compatible to insulation material and removable without any damage to insulation. Single core armoured cables have extruded PVC

bedding.

Armouring

Single core cables for use on A.C systems, are armoured with single layer of aluminium wires. Multi-core armoured cables have single layer of Galvanized Steel wire Armour over bedding with left hand lay.

No. of cores   Identification

1   Red or Black

2   Red and Black

3   Red, Yellow and Blue

4   Red, Yellow, Blue and Black

Page 10: Power Cables

Other armours like steel strip, tape can also be provided against customer specification.

Oversheath

Sheaths are extruded with Black PVC compound of type TM 1 and comply with the requirements of BS 6746:1990. When specified anti termite properties can be provided on the sheath.

Packing, storage and handling

Cables for power supplies are always packed in appropriate sizes of strong and seasoned wooden drums designed to withstand long distance transit and preservation in stores.

Power cables of all sizes of single core, Power cables of multi-cores upto 120 sq.mm. are packed in standard lengths of 500 metre + 5% and Power cables of multi-cores of 150 sq.mm. and above are packed in standard lengths of 250 metre +

5%. It is advised that drums are always to be stored in concrete floors to avoid sinking in mud and damages or deterioration of drum flanges and shall not be stored on its flanges horizontal to ground. Drums are designed for easy

handling when transported by cranes or mounted on cable drum wheels for laying. Cables in drums shall be stored away from boilers and furnaces.

Customer orientation

Against specific requirement and application, Q-Flx Wires & Cables  can offer cables conforming to either customer specification or other National and International Standards.

Current ratings

Current ratings of cables installed in air and around buildings reference should be made to'Regulations for electrical installations' (IEE Wiring Regulations), 15th Edition and the current ratings of cables installed in other situations

reference should be made to 'Current rating standards for distribution cables', ERA 69-30:Part Ill.
