Having poisoned the
woods & earth with the
diseases of his ailing
grandmother, the Pow
Wow Practitioner is
face to face with an
earth golem in his
grandmother’s bedroom.
I can’t just let
this thing take
my grandmother.
I have to try to fight it.
I dive into it.
Trying to tackle it.
But I sink into it.
Going into its
mud flesh.
Inside of the thing
it is cold...
...& black...
...& empty.
A complete void.
It seems like
an eternity…
…before I come out
the other side of it…
…coughing mud…
…throwing up.
I look over.
The monster has
my grandmother
in its arms.
It steps over me…
...carrying her.
I grab its leg…
…& try to take its
power using Pow Wow.
My hand feels
like it’s on fire.
Part of its leg
turns from mud
to solid earth.
The solid piece
slides off.
Replaced by
fresh mud.
The beast lumbers on.
I gather the
strength to stand.
It’s not going to
take her & leave
me here alive.
I’ve got to stop it
without hurting her.
Instead of trying to
tackle it again…
…I step inside
the thing.
My whole body in it.
Trying to gain
control of it before
I suffocate.
The black emptiness
is smothering.
I try to fill the void.
Burning with
fire & light.
My lungs about
to burst.
The mud starts to
slide off of me.
The monster just a
thousand pounds of
wet earth on the floor.
I collapse…
My grandmother
in my arms.
I don’t have the
strength to speak.
Just to cry.
Tears of joy.
