V a nd erburgh County is lo c ated in southwest Ind ia na, a nd is b o und ed by the c o unties o fPosey, Gibso n a nd Warric k to the west, north a nd east, respectively. The state o fKentuc ky b o rd ers the c o unty to the south. The m a jo rity o f the c o unty lies within theOhio River Basin, while the no rth-c entra l, northwest a nd west-c entra l po rtio ns o f thec o unty are situated within the Lo wer Wa b ash River Basin.The Potentio m etric Surfa c e M ap (PSM ) o f the b ed ro c k aquifers o f V a nd erburgh Co untywas m apped by c o ntouring the elevatio ns o f 630 static water-levels repo rted o n wellrec o rd s rec eived prim arily o ver a 50 year perio d . These wells are c o m pleted in aquifersat vario us d epths, a nd typic a lly, und er c o nfined c o nd itio ns (b o und ed by im perm ea b lela yers a b o ve a nd b elo w the water bearing fo rm atio n). Ho wever, so m e wells werec o m pleted und er unc o nfined (no t b o und ed by im perm ea b le la yers) settings. The potentio m etric surfa c e is a m easure o f the pressure o n water in a water bearingfo rm atio n. Water in a n unc o nfined aquifer is at atm o spheric pressure a nd will no t rise ina well a b o ve the top o f the aquifer, in c o ntrast to ground water in a c o nfined aquifer whic his und er hydrostatic pressure a nd will rise in a well a b o ve the to p o f the water bearingfo rm atio n.Static water-level m easurem ents in ind ivid ua l wells used to c o nstruct c o unty PSM ’s areind ic ative o f the water-level at the tim e o f well c o m pletio n. The gro und water levelwithin a n aquifer c o nsta ntly fluctuates in respo nse to ra infa ll, evapo tra nspiratio n,ground water m o vem ent a nd pum pa ge. Therefo re, m easured static water-levels in a n aream a y d iffer due to lo c a l or seaso na l variatio ns. Bec ause fluctuatio ns in gro und water aretypic a lly sm a ll, static water-levels c a n b e used to c o nstruct a genera lized PSM . As agenera l rule, but c erta inly no t a lwa ys, ground water flo w appro xim ates the o verlyingtopo graphy a nd intersects the la nd surfa c e at m a jo r strea m s.U niversa l Tra nsverse M erc ator (U TM ) c o o rd inates fo r the water wells were eitherphysic a lly o bta ined in the field , d eterm ined through a d d ress geo c o d ing, o r repo rted o nwater well rec o rds. The lo c atio n o f the m a jo rity o f the water well rec o rds used to m a kethe PSM were field verified . Elevatio n d ata were o bta ined fro m a d igita l elevatio nm o d el. Qua lity c o ntro l/qua lity assura nc e pro c ed ures were utilized to refine o r rem o ved a ta where errors were rea d ily apparent.Potentio m etric surfa c e elevatio ns ra nge fro m a high o f 490 feet m ea n sea level (msl) inthe no rtheastern portio n o f the c o unty, to a lo w o f 310 feet msl in the so uthwest part o fthe c o unty. Regio na l ground water flo w d irectio n is genera lly to wards the west in theno rthern a nd western portio ns o f the c o unty, with lo c a lized flo w to wards Big Creek a ndits tributaries suc h as Barr Creek, Neu Creek a nd Little Creek. The regio na l flo w in theeastern a nd southern portio ns o f the c o unty is genera lly to wards the Ohio River withlo c a lized flo w to wards tributaries suc h as Pigeo n Creek a nd Bayo u Creek.Bedro c k potentio m etric surfa c e elevatio n c o nto urs ha ve no t been extend ed thro ughportio ns o f the c o unty. These areas are la c king in d ata a nd /o r c o vered by m o re pro lificunc o nso lid a ted d eposits that lim it the nec essity to c o m plete wells in bed ro c k. The c o unty PSM c a n b e used to d efine the regio na l ground water flo w path a nd to id entifysignific a nt areas o f ground water rec harge a nd d isc harge. County PSM ’s represent o vera llregio na l c hara c teristics a nd are no t intend ed to b e a substitute fo r site-spec ific stud ies.
