In 1996 I began to teachmusic as a classical vocalteacher in Vienna, Austriawhilst simultaneouslymaintaining my singingcareer as a professionalartist. It was during thistime I realised how muchI enjoyed encouraging and

equipping internationalstudents. Later, a fter my two sons were born inVienna I began to focus on teaching voice in anafter school music programme offered at theVienna International School where I also workedin Primary as an Educational Sta ff Supportmember. I developed an interest in pursuing aformal teaching q ualifica tion; however, it wa schallenging to find one that would be suitable inthat I had decided to prioritize my family anddid not want to leave Austria. It was during thistime that several of my colleagues highlyrecommended the PGCE overseas programme a t

Sunderland University to me. I wa s fortunate tobe able to combine my year of study with beingappointed the Artist in Residence for Voice at theVienna International School in Secondary Music.I had the unique opportunity to collabora te a s a nestablished professional and to immerse myselfin the intensive PGCE programme for my teachertraining. I found that the PGCE curriculum atSunderland was relevant for my work with

international students in an IB School. I had anexcellent mentor at VIS and also benefited fromthe support, guidance and feedback I receivedfrom Sunderland, most especially from their visitto observe my teaching. My studies were quitedemanding but equally enriching and solidlyprepared me for my next step, Both musicteachers left for a maternity leave and I wasfortunate to finish my studies and be appointedfor one of their positions in secondary music!I am very happy and continuing to enjoy myjourney in teaching!

academic and vocational subjects, we can

also offer a range of skills modules to help get

you back into formal study and develop your
