Country and Community History

At our grandparents time…

Mothers were usually housewives and

busied themselves the education of

children. Most of the people only studied

primary level. Fathers worked to support

the family. In poorer class all members

worked (in the field or in factories),

including older children who took care of

siblings or also helped in the field.

Communication was made mainly by

writing. The phone was hardly used. The

radio was very popular. There were

newspapers and some magazines.

The long-distance transportation was

done mainly by train and bus. Cars were

only for the wealthier people. There

were many bicycles and scooters. In the

fields the wagon was the most used.

The family entertainment passed

through lessening to radio. Balls were

very popular. After school, children

played in groups on the street. Girls

learned sewing and needlework and boys

played preferably ball and marble.

Now a day…

Both parents work. Communications are

made through new technologies. Young

people start early to attend nightlife.

Transportation is much easier. The

school takes a longer part of the day and

adapted itself to the new social

demands.

No tempo dos nossos avós…

As mães eram, geralmente, donas de casa

e ocupavam-se da educação dos filhos. A

maior parte da população só terminava o

ensino primário. Os pais trabalhavam, para

sustentar a família. Na classe mais pobre

todos os membros trabalhavam (no campo

ou nas fábricas) e as crianças mais velhas

tomavam conta dos irmãos ou também

ajudavam no campo.

Comunicava-se principalmente por carta. O

telefone era pouco usado. Ouvia-se rádio.

Havia jornais e algumas revistas.

O transporte de longa distância era feito

de comboio e autocarro. Automóveis só

para as pessoas mais abastadas. Havia

bicicletas e lambretas. No campo a

carroça era o meio mais usado.

Privilegiava-se o serão familiar a ouvir

rádio. Os bailes eram muito populares. As

crianças brincavam em grupos na rua. As

meninas aprendiam costura e lavores e os

rapazes jogavam preferencialmente à bola

e ao berlinde.

Hoje em dia…

Pai e mãe trabalham, comunica-se através

das novas tecnologias, os jovens começam
