President Nixon hinted on this day in 1973, that the United States might again intervene in Vietnam to prevent communist violations of the cease-fire truce. The truce, under the provisions of the Paris Peace Accords, had gone into effect on January 27, 1973, but was quickly and repeatedly violated by both sides as they jockeyed for control of territory in South Vietnam.

Nixon had been instrumental in convincing the reluctant South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu to sign the peace treaty, promising him that, “We will respond with full force should the settlements be violated by North Vietnam.”

The Vietnamese North-South fighting continued into 1974. Thieu appealed to Nixon to make good on his promises, even though virtually all remaining American forces were brought back to the United States in 1973.

Nixon had become increasingly embroiled in the Watergate scandal and resigned from office in August, 1974. His successor, Gerald Ford, was unable to persuade Congress to provide the promised support to South Vietnam. The North Vietnamese then launched their final offensive in the spring of 1975 and South Vietnam was defeated. It surrendered unconditionally on April 30, 1975.

On the third Tuesday of the month beginning at 6 p.m., caregivers will meet for the Alzheimer’s Association’s support group. The next meet-ing will be held March 19, fol-lowed by April 16. Facilitated by a trained leader, the group meets at St. Mary Medical Center Auditorium located at 1500 South Lake Park Avenue in Hobart.

This group meets monthly to provide caregivers with an opportunity to share their experiences and receive sup-port from others coping with Alzheimer’s disease. During the meetings, caregivers are encouraged to share informa-tion, give and receive support, and exchange coping experi-ences and strategies. Meetings are open to the public and fa-cilitated by a trained profes-sional and/or family member.

“It’s important for care-givers to remember that they are not alone on their journey through dementia caregiving. Support groups are a great way to meet other caregivers for advice and understand-ing,” said Kristi Ritchie of the Alzheimer’s Association.

There is no cost or commit-ment for caregivers to attend. For more information visit www.alz.org/indiana or call 800-272-3900.

The University of Evan-sville has announced that Taylor Perry of Crown Point has been inducted into the newly formed Indiana Alpha chapter of Nu Rho Psi, the

national honor society in neuroscience.

Perry, a Neuroscience major, officially became a Nu Rho Psi member during an induction ceremony held

Tuesday, February 26, in UE’s Eykamp Hall.

To be eligible for member-ship in Nu Rho Psi, students must be a neuroscience ma-jor or minor, have completed

at least three semesters of university coursework, have completed at least nine se-mester hours of neuroscience-related courses, and hold a cumulative grade point aver-age of 3.2 or higher, as well as a minimum GPA of 3.5 in neuroscience courses.

Perry was among 17 stu-dents and two faculty members selected to join the first class of Nu Rho Psi inductees at the University of Evansville.

Nu Rho Psi was founded in 2006 by the Faculty for Undergraduate Neurosci-ence. The University of Evansville holds the honor society’s 29th charter nation-wide and the first in Indiana.

The Jared Tomich Halo of Hope Foundation has teamed up with local Buffalo Wild Wings locations during the month of March in support of the Hoops for Halos donation program, which runs through the month of March.

All proceeds from dona-tions will go directly to The Halo of Hope Foundation,

founded by local, retired NFL player Jared Tomich. Tomich began his foundation after attending a Circle of Friends camp in Wisconsin that fo-cused on children with can-cer. This is his foundation’s first year running the Hoops for Halos program.

The program allows cus-tomers to donate in two ways.

At the end of the meal, cus-tomers are able to round up their bill, or donate a few dol-lars in support of the Halo of Hope Foundation. Customers who donate will receive a Hoops for Halos pinup to be signed and placed on the wall of Buffalo Wild Wings for the duration of the month.

The second way to donate

is through donation boxes. Each location has a Halo of Hope Foundation donation box at the front of the loca-tion to allow individuals to donate change.

The Hoops for Halos pro-gram is available at 8 local Buffalo Wild Wings including Crown Point, Schererville, Hobart, and Valparaiso.
