Council will start work in Murwillumbah Street – from the clock in Queen Street through to Brisbane Street – on Tuesday 1 September. It has committed to close the job in the first week of December to be out of the main street ahead of the peak Christmas trading period and the start of the worst of the wet season. “While there is never a good time to dig up the main street in the CBD, our only work window is in the next few months as we cannot risk working in deep trenches on live stormwater drains during the wet season,” Construction Engineer Nigel Dobson said. “While we will do everything we can to limit the impact on the CBD, it is critical that we complete this upgrade to make the town centre less susceptible to overland flooding and all its associated issues.” The current CBD drainage system is more than 80 years old. It is inefficient, prone to blockage and at times creates an odour due to stagnant water trapped at low points. There’s also some infrastructure on private property that needs to be relocated to allow easy access for future maintenance. “Our plan to get as far as Brisbane Street but if possible we will finish the entire job through to its end point 20 metres west of Queensland Road so we don’t have to come back next year,” Mr Dobson said. Council will be working on the northern side of the street and will close that lane around the worksite. The west bound lane will remain open but will be one way from Queen Street to Queensland Road. Footpath access will be maintained on both sides of the street. The work will be undertaken from 6am-6pm Monday to Friday, with a possible extension to 7pm during daylight saving hours. CBD businesses, customers and nearby residents can expect some noise from machinery and some dust. Council began the upgrade in 2006, replacing the pipes beneath Tumbulgum Road, Wharf Street, Commercial Road and Proudfoots Lane. Chance to win in asbestos survey Tweed residents have the opportunity to win $150 to spend at their local hardware store by completing a survey on the Asbestos Awareness Campaign. Tweed Shire Council participated in the campaign over the past 12 months to raise awareness on illegally dumped asbestos, with the program ending on 30 June this year. Council’s Coordinator Waste Management, Rod Dawson, said the campaign had been a trial program to identify whether reducing disposal costs had a direct impact on decreasing cases of illegally dumped asbestos. “Over the 12 month period, 796 Tweed residents and removal companies took advantage of the reduced disposal rate, disposing of approximately 176.5 tonnes of asbestos waste,” Mr Dawson said. “During the 12-month period, there were no reports of illegally dumped asbestos. In previous years, Councils in the Northern Rivers region cleaned up 15 loads of illegally dumped asbestos at an estimated cost of $30,000.” Mr Dawson said the funding received from the NSW EPA Waste Less, Recycle More initiative enabled Tweed Shire Council to reduce asbestos disposal fees by more than 50 per cent during the campaign, from $183.50 per tonne to $85 per tonne. “Illegally dumped asbestos places a significant environmental and financial cost on Council”, Mr Dawson said. “Specialised private contractors often need to be engaged to do the clean up because of the potentially dangerous health risks associated with asbestos.” To have your say on the Asbestos Awareness Campaign and go in the draw to win, complete the survey before 7 August at www.illegaldumping.com.au/survey.html This program has been funded with the support of the NSW EPA Waste Less, Recycle More initiative funded from the waste levy. The winning Tweed resident will be able to select a hardware store of their choice at which to use their voucher. Beach and Ozone streets, and replace with a temporary bitumen seal will take two days. The street will be open only to local residents, with traffic under the control of stop/slow flagmen. Through traffic will be diverted via Marine Parade. After the bitumen seal is applied, Council will begin several months of testing to determine if the existing road construction is sufficiently robust to carry a single asphalt surface. Currently, the asphalt pavement comprises several thin layers which are peeling off as a result of the bond between the layers breaking from the movement created by traffic and water ingress. The temporary bitumen seal could be in place for up to five months before a permanent surface is applied. Council will start work next week (Tuesday 11 August) to eliminate a road noise issue for residents of Kingscliff Street, Kingscliff. Everybody belongs itrsquos a nice phrase but do we really believe itItrsquos more than a phrase to us at The Belonging Project We believe that this can become a cornerstone value of the Tweed Shire communityThe belonging project started as a research project We wanted to see what made kids and families feel they belong The research found that although the Tweed Shire is welcoming at times these families experienced judgement in the communityA child crying because there was too much sensory information a kid crying in a sports team judged without understanding - these are experiences kids and parents have encountered in the Tweed community As a result families often feel isolated and miss out on experiences many of us take for grantedFriendship and showing understanding can really make a differenceEverybody Belongs is a campaign that intends to raise awareness of issues that these parents and kids in our community face daily We offer support and information about ways every member of our community can include everybody no matter what they look sound or act like For more information about Everybody Belongs or to be involved in the campaign please contact Kim Tyson on 0427 829889 or on belongingnrsdcorgau
