Post-Test Review6th Grade

ELEMENTS OF DESIGN are:• Line• Shape• Color• Value• Texture• Space• Form

LINE• A mark made on a surface that

has length and direction.

LINE

SHAPE

• A two-dimensional enclosed area, or object.

SHAPE

ORGANIC

GEOMETRIC

SHAPES

• BLOCK LETTERS & NUMBERS ARE SHAPES.

• CURSIVE LETTERS ARE LINES

COLOR• The quality of light

reflected from an object, and not absorbed.

• Isaac Newton discovered that white light (from the sun), when refracted through a prism, would break up into it’s separate colors (ROY G BIV).

COLOR WHEELColors are divided into

groups or “schemes”.• Primary• Secondary• Tertiary/Intermediate• Complementary• Analogous• Warm /Cool

PRIMARY COLORS CANNOT BE MADE FROM OTHER COLORS

Secondary colors can be created BY mixing primary colors.

Tertiary Colors A tertiary color

is a color made by mixing one primary color with one secondary color.

Complementary colors are colors that are opposite of each other on the color wheel, such as blue and orange, red and green, violet and yellow.

Analogous Colors Are next to each other on the color

wheel.

VALUE

• THE LIGHTNESS OR DARKNESS OF A COLOR.

VALUETINTS: Color mixed with white SHADES: Color mixed with black

TEXTURE

• The tactile quality of a surface. It can be actual or implied.

TEXTURE

ACTUAL TEXTURE

IMPLIED TEXTURE

SPACE

• The illusion of depth & distance.

POSITIVE / NEGATIVE SPACE

THE AIRPLANE IS NEGATIVE

THE TREE IS POSITIVE

SPACE

• The cut outs are negative and the left over dough is positive.

SPACE

FOREGROUND- Objects larger and warmer in color.

MIDDLEGROUND- Objects get smaller

BACKGROUND- Colors get cooler & objects get blurrier

ATMOSPHERIC PERSPECTIVE

FORM

• Three-dimensional shapes or objects. • Form can be implied or actual. • Value is used to create form in painting and

drawing.

CONTOUR LINE VS. FORM

REALISM VS. ABSTRACT

This one has form This one has shape

SCULPTURE

An ARMATURE is:• The skeleton that

supports the material by which the sculpture is made (i.e. clay, paper mache, etc.)

The Principles of Design • …are the rules by which we use

the ELEMENTS.• The recipe or guidelines on how

to use the elements of design.

The Principles are:• Balance• Contrast• Emphasis• Rhythm

• Movement• Proportion• Unity• Pattern

BALANCEBalance is a feeling of equality

or stability in a piece of artwork. There are three types:

1.Symmetrical2.Asymmetrical3.Radial

SYMMETRICAL

SYMMETRICAL & RADIAL

ASYMMETRICAL

CONTRAST• … is achieved by using

opposite elements in an artwork to create interest.

RHYTHM

• Rhythm is created when similar elements repeat, creating a sense of movement. Repeating elements do NOT have to be exactly alike.

THIS CAN ALSO BE UNITY!

MOVEMENT• …is the way the human eye

travels through an artwork in a particular direction.

MOVEMENT

UNITY• .. is when SIMILAR elements

work together to create harmony (mood or theme).

EMPHASIS• … is the focal point in an

artwork, or the most important part.

Emphasis

PROPORTION• … is the comparative relationship of one

part to another, such as the size, amounts, or number of elements in an artwork.

PROPORTION

PATTERN• Created when identical elements

repeat sequentially.

PATTERN
