The Next Level of Value: Driving Competitive Advantage & Strategic Business GrowthThis year saw the celebration of SSON’s 15th anniversary of operating in Australasia. SSO Week 2012, which took place in Melbourne on 16-19 April, once again attracted over 470 shared services and outsourcing professionals, making it the biggest event of its kind in the region.
With economic factors such as business growth opportunities in Asia Pacific, the effects of the mining boom and the need for organisations to be sufficiently structured to weather further volatility on the global stage, the savings and agility operational excellence can bring were high on the agenda.
Additionally, conversations around the capability of SSOs to become more analytical in the services they provide through the integration of Big Data, Business Intelligence and superior risk management and business continuity planning also featured heavily in discussions.
However, the theme that was consistently recognised and built upon over the three days was people.
Whether in the context of cross-skilling future leaders, approaching change management and communication, improving industry branding to attract the right talent in a very competitive market, or engaging with the ‘notorious’ Gen Y – the future lifeblood of our industry – it was resolutely recognised that the core pillar of transformational success revolves around the people involved.
With this in mind, I hope this inspires you to interact with SSON and one another throughout the year – to knowledge-share, problem solve, hatch ideas and solutions and join us in making the 2013 show our most innovative yet.
SSO Week 2013 will take place on 6-8 May at the Sebel Albert Park, Melbourne – email me to register your interest on [email protected]
Kind regards, Natalie Williams Program Director APAC SSON
Just some of the highlights from 2012
Delegates at SSO Week enjoyed the injection of innovative networking breaks and social functions, live and interactive audience polling and a multitude of presentation formats – from detailed case studies, to lively panel discussions; thought provoking Big Ideas, to the controversy of G6.
The atmosphere was electric!

C-Suite Forums
Recognising that shared services and outsourcing discussions are continuing to rise further and further up boardroom agendas, this year SSO Week featured to special dedicated roundtable sessions specifically for our C-Suite delegates.
Held as pre-conference gatherings before the grand opening on the morning of 16th April, the CFO Forum and CIO/CTO Forum gathered together some of Australasia’s leading executives from the private and public sectors to discuss the challenges they are facing as their roles continue to augment.
The CFO Forum, sponsored by Commonwealth Bank, assessed the challenges being faced by CFOs post-GFC as volatility, risk and compliance are offset against increased pressure from shareholders and the public to receive more ‘bank for their buck’.
The CIO/CTO Forum, sponsored by IBM and Infosys, delved into the need for IT as a function to become more commercial and communicative with the business whilst embracing game changing technologies such as social media and Big Data.
Michael Ford Deputy CFO at Commonwealth Bank and Scott Macleod, CTO at the Australian Federal Police later took to the main stage at SSO Week to report back to the wider audience on the opinions and goals uncovered in the CFO and CIO/CTO Forums. The need for back office functions such as finance and IT to work better together and provide more forward looking analysis, structured within a model which is tailored to core business needs, was the number one message ringing true.
SSO Week 2013 will see the CFO and CIO/CTO Forums once again integrated into the main event, ensuring that discussions remain at senior, strategic level.

Time out of the office is always hard to justify,
but if there is one date a year I put in my calender
it is SSOWeek. It's the people and ideas that you can't put a price
on... I have a job to do and attending helps me
do exactly that.

In Australia, like elsewhere, we find that shared services centres help organisations, both public and private, to reduce their cost base, enhance and simplify organisational processes, and also provide a platform for growth opportunities. To gain value from shared services, organisations need to align their approach with their broader corporate strategy. To be successful, it is critical that there is a heavy focus on change management elements such as communication, training, and executive leadership. The power of an organisation’s culture cannot be underestimated or ignored. These are aspects that many organisations underestimate and under invest in with significant impact upon the speed and success of shared services implementation.

Well and truly established as the annual event to attend – and retaining its title as the largest shared services event in APAC – excitement is already mounting for SSO Week 2013.
In addition to year-round engagement with our community, innovative ideas are already being pooled and the program structure being updated to ensure that the event continues to tick the right boxes for delegates and sponsors alike.
Some new features already in motion include:
An adjoining plenary and exhibition room for maximum networking opportunities
CFO & CIO Forums integrated into Day 2 of the program to encourage even more strategic discussions
High level, inspiring speakers from within and outwith the industry
Returning to a more intimate hotel environment
Shorter days with more networking time integrated into the program
With fierce competition for the limited opportunities available to engage this motivate audience, and as testament to the satisfaction and results received at this year’s event, many of our partners have already committed to supporting us next year, including:
*NB: Sponsorship opportunities are strictly limited to retain our primary/tertiary attendee ratio*
SSO Week 2013 will take place on 6-8 May at the Sebel Albert Park, Melbourne.
