Introduction

Comprehensive Prosthetics & Orthotics offers both custom and ready to fit silicone prostheses, as well as, weighted / non-weighted foam forms, fiber filled prostheses post-mastectomy bras, camisoles, sports bras, and swim prostheses. The main goal is that women build a wardrobe according to their comfort level, the activities they are involved in and to regain their presentation before surgery.

We offer a variety of different styles and sizes of prostheses as well as bras and other accessories to offer the most comfort for ourwomen. Many times these products can be provided at the time ofservice.

It is important that after leaving Comprehensive Prosthetics & Orthotics that you feel informed of all options we provide as well as being comfortable and confident with yourself.

Q: If reconstruction is planned, will a prosthesis be needed?A: Since decisions related to reconstruction need not be scheduledat the time of the initial surgery, patients can choose to bridge the time with a prosthesis that maintains body alignment and provides shape to the individual profile.

Q: Do the silicone or foam prostheses trigger security alarmsat airports or in retail department stores?A: Silicone prostheses are not known to trigger alarm systems. However, materials used in the weighted foam prosthesis are made up of a metal/gel weight and could potentially be sensitive to security alarms. If you have a foam prosthesis just be aware that the prosthesis does contain metal. But it does not need to be a concern, its just important to be aware. If you are concerned a prescription from your physician can be provided.

Q: How often should fittings be repeated?A: It is suggested that new measurements be taken as often asevery 6 months until the body has stabilized. Anatomical changes may include swelling, weight loss/gain, and changes in shape.

Q : When am I allowed to get new garments and/or prostheses?A: Most insurances allow at least 2 new garments per year. Many insurances will say as medically necessary; which is about 6 per year. It is important to remember the expected lifetime of a bra is only 6 months. A silicone prosthesis can be replaced once every two years. And a foam form can get replaced once every six months. However, everyone’s insurance is different and will need to be contacted before new garments and prostheses are provided.

Q: Will insurance pay for the prosthesis and bras?A: Many private insurance plans, as well as Medicare, have anallowable reimbursement for these services. It is suggested your insurance be contacted to determine benefits, restrictions, and patient responsibilities. CPO will process Medicare and other private insurance claims according to our office policy. CPO will process Medicare and is an “In-Network Provider” for many insurance providers.

Frequently Asked QuestionsNon-Surgical Image Reconstruction Options

Q: Why is wearing a breast prosthesis important for a post-mastectomy patient?A: While recreating a pre-surgery appearance helps meet thepsychological need for a positive self-esteem, the use of a breast prosthesis also serves a physiological purpose by restoring natural balance and carriage of body weight. Not wearing a breast prosthesis, can create: • Spinal curvature • Shoulder drop • Balance problems • Muscle contracture and stretching/neck and back pain • Clothing to fit inappropriately due to incorrect posture

Building and Maintaing your “Post-Mastectomy Wardrobe”

It is suggested that patients evaluate and refresh their “wardrobe” annually to review changes in lifestyle, personal choices and thefit of current garments. Due to the fact that our bodies change and products breakdown over time, it is important to know when youare eligible for new or different style garments and/or prostheses. Insurance benefits are commonly based on manufacturer’s lifeexpectancy of the product which is 6 months for foam prostheses and 2 years for silicone prostheses. It is important to be informed of all your options and benefits.

It is our goal to help our patients look and feel great all year long. Please feel free to call if you are uncertain when you are eligible for new garments and/or prostheses and we will do our best to assist you.

Donning Instructions

The PROSTHESIS:Prior to donning the bra, insert breast form into cuppocket and adjust. While doing so, use care to ensurethe form is not punctured by fingernails, or foldedexcessively. ALWAYS handle the prosthesis gentlywhile inserting or removing it from the bra. Repetitivesqueezing or pulling can damage the form.

The BRA:1. Reach into straps while bending forward.2. Pull the garment in towards the body while centering the cups.3. Fasten hooks.4. Adjust breast tissue of non-surgical side into the bra cup.5. Adjust the prosthesis.

Care Instructions

The PROSTHESIS:•

AVOID getting perfumes, powders, oils, deodorants, or very hot water on the breast form as they will harm the silicone.Keep the form away from sharp objects, pets, and pins. Put jewelry on garment before dressing.A cotton cloth pouch can be used to cover the prosthesis during wear to protect it from body oil.Clean as needed with warm water and mild soap. Rinse well and let the prosthesis air dry.A dry prosthesis should always be stored in cradled storage box, away from heat when not in use to maintain original shape.

•••

Hand wash in warm water with mild soap.Or Machine wash and line dry.Do NOT use Woolite®, bleach or fabric softener.

The BRA:

*Every person heals differently and stages may vary.

Q: If a lumpectomy is done, will a prosthesis still be needed?A: Partial prostheses or shells, and ‘enhancers’ are available to create profile symmetry when surgery has been performed.

Q: When wearing a breast prosthesis, why is wearing a post-mastectomy bra recommended?A: A pocketed post-mastectomy bra is advised because... • The pocketed bra creates security for the prosthesis and allows the form to move with the body. • The mastectomy bra is designed to allow a higher fit under the arm where tissue may be missing. • The straps are set closer in the back to help balance the prosthesis weight. • Side frames help support, anchor, and balance the band around the body.

Q: Can a silicone breast prosthesis be used in the swimming pool, hot tub, or salt water?A: Many manufacturers indicate their products can be used in either a swimming pool or hot tub, but we will suggest that a specifically designed swim form be used if you are in chlorinated water regularly. Otherwise, the breast form you were provided with can be worn in a pool or hot tub. The prosthesis will need to be washed well with a mild soap and left to air dry after each use.

Life after breast surgery* Just as before your surgery it is important to build awardrobe of choices. It is important to keep a variety ofdifferent styles of bras and prostheses. Multiple options will provide you with a variety of combinations that allowyou to pick and choose according to your activity level that day.

More than six weeks after surgery* Traditional Fashion Bra: Once the patient iscompletely healed it is recommended they return to a fashion bra.

Silicone Prostheses: The silicone breast prosthesisoffers the most natural feel and look for women who have had a mastectomy.

Less than six weeks after surgery* Cotton Stretch Bra: This is a very soft andstretchable garment that has a front closure. This garment is recommended for low levels of activity.

Weighted or Non-Weighted Foam Prostheses: These prostheses are used during the final stages of healing when comfort and ease is still a primary need. However, these garments can also be worn during low activity anytime throughout the patients life.

Immediately After Surgery* Camisole/Fiber Filled Prostheses: Fiber forms are great for post surgery or during chemotherapy or radiation treatments because they are soft and light weight. The camisole gives minimal support for the non-surgical breast, while still providing comfort. This garment comes with removable drainage pouches for post surgery drainage bulbs.Care: Remove fiber breast forms (prostheses) beforewashing the camisole. Rinse the cover and fiber separately by hand and air dry. Machine wash; line dry camisole.
