They eat the new growth of native trees such as : Totara, Rata, Titoki , Kowhai and Kohekohe.

They also like to eat all of our native birds.

These are the main methods of control for possums.

WHAT IS 1080 ? 1080 is a poison that is mixed into baits to

control a range of pests, especially possums, rats and stoats.

The pest control get into big helicopters and spray 1080 across big areas of forests.

WHY DO WE USE 1080 ?

To kill all of the pests to save our native trees and animals.

Benefits of using 1080 Negative effects of using 1080 It can kill all of the pests that are

killing our native plants of animals.

It could kill native animals and trees by accident.

New Zealand could be a pest free country.

Our family pets could get killed by it.

It wouldn’t cost as much money for D.O.C.

We could inhale it and get sick.

WHAT WE THINK ABOUT 1080 :

MICHAELA and KATRIN : We think we shouldn’t spray 1080 in NZ because it is killing native animals by mistake, however we think they could make 1080 bait balls that only attract pests

so our NZ animals can be safe.

IZZY : I think we should not use 1080 because people are not careful enough when they spray.
