How to install version 3.1.16To qualify for POSoft version 3.1.16, you must meet two conditions: Your POSoft license expiration date must be June 1st, 2003 or later. To view your expiration date, in POSoft, click

Program, Licensing. Your license expiration date shows up in the lower half of the licensing screen. You must have POSoft Full (standalone) version 3.0.91 or 3.1.13 installed. To verify your version number in

POSoft, click Help, About POSoft. Your version number shows up in the center of the small windows that opens.

To install the 3.1.16 update file, do this: Exit POSoft. Download the update file by clicking the first link on the POSoft Information center page:

http://www.posortho.com/Posoft/ In the Download window, select Desktop, then click Save. Wait for the download to complete. Click Open, then Next… Always click on the highlighted default answer on each screen. If an overwrite warning appears, click Yes to All. Wait for the software installation to complete. Start and license POSoft.

POSoft Changes in version 3.1.16DentalCad Buttons are used for filters instead of pulldown menus. Several filters were removed. A new “invert” filter was added. Overall, the filters are much easier to use. A smaller point size is used for more accuracy when placing points. Mixed dentition signs were corrected where necessary. Overprinting has been fixed for most circumstances.

POSoftThe treatment options window has been redesigned to be easier to use. Its functionality is the same as before, but the layout has been changed.

POSoft Changes in version 3.1.13Export / ImportThere is now an additional message. If you export a patient’s data, and the export succeeds, you will see a message similar to this one, indicating successful export, location and file name, and file size:

This is information is important for email case diagnoses. You need to know the file name to know what file to attach, and the file size because many email programs have restrictions on file size.

Backup / RestoreData Backup

The backup process has been modified. Read below to learn how to complete a backup of your patient data.

NOTE: We suggest that you backup your data at least once a week.

1. From the Program menu, choose “Backup”

2. Click the “Location” button to define where you would like your backup to be placed. Make sure to backup your data to your external device (zip drive, memory stick, external hard drive) if you have one. If you do not have an external device, create a new folder in your “My Documents” folder called “POSoft Backup.” Then, backup up your data to that folder.

3. Click “OK” once you have chosen your backup location.

4. Shortly after you start the backup, you will see this question:

Click OK, and the backup process will continue. The backup process will NOT begin until you click “OK.” If a backup file already exists, you will see this warning:

5. Click “Yes” to overwrite the existing file. If you click “No”, you will receive a “Backup Aborted” message. Do not be alarmed if the backup process takes a few minutes. Once the backup has finished, you will see:

6. Click “OK.” The backup utility now creates only one file. The file name to look for is “backup.taz”. This file should be in the location you specified. This will make it easier to transfer your patient data to another computer should you decide to switch computers.

OrderingThere is a new tab on the POSoft Full version screen called “Ordering”. Its major benefits are:

Combining orders for multiple patients in one order, saving you time and shipping charges.

Easy custom ordering for individual brackets, bands, and archwires.

Keeping track of order history.

Read below for detail on how to use the Ordering Tab.

NOTE: Placing an order via fax or phone will generate an additional $20 charge. There is no additional charge for placing the order electronically as described below.

Preparing the OrderNOTE: The instructions below assume you already know how to design IP Appliances and fill out the archwires tab.

1. Start POSoft, and open the record for the patient for whom you wish to place an order.

2. On the IP Appliance screen, make sure all questions are answered, and there are no outstanding warnings. Then click the “Add to Order” button:

3. If the Print Prescription option is checked, the IP Appliance RX screen will appear. You may print it, or just click the Exit button on the upper right to close the print preview window.

4. If a pending order already exists for this patient, you will get this message

Click Yes to ADD the items, No to REPLACE the IP appliance items in the current order with items from the IP appliance screen, or Cancel to simply close that window. In other words, if you made changes on the IP Appliance screen, and you want those changes to take effect, choose No.

5. After the IP appliance items have been added, you will see:

Adding Parts

You may also add any individual items you wish, for any one patient or for multiple patients. For instance, you can use this screen to place a custom order by selecting any one bracket, band or archwire, then pressing the Add button for that category. Or you can simply add items to any order(s) that appear already in the final order window. In the following example, two 21LACer brackets for the “Replacement Parts” patient will be added to an order that already contains items for Izah Decepida.

1. Select the patient’s name in the drop down box underneath “Patient Name”. You do NOT need to open that patient’s record from the patient screen. You may add items for one patient while another patient is open.

2. Under Ceramic Brackets, select 21LACer (or whatever bracket or band you wish). The item’s description will appear under “Product Description” in the upper left.

3. Click the up or down arrow to the right of “Ceramic Brackets” underneath the word Quantity until the desired quantity appears in the Quantity window (clicking the up arrow increases the quantity by one, down arrow decreases it by one).

4. Click the Add button to the right of Quantity. The item(s) will show up in the Final Order section to the right:

5. On the next screen, you will see the Confirmation Code window. Type your confirmation code, which is usually your last name, then click the Continue button:

Consider this the same as a signature on a drug prescription written by a physician. The confirmation code is typically the doctor’s last name (NOT the POSoft user ID).

6. The next screen will show a progress bar while the POS online store is being contacted:

Depending on your connection speed and the number of items in the order, there may be a delay of a few seconds up to a minute or more.

7. At the top of the next screen you will see:

You are now in the Progressive Orthodontics online store.

Across the top are buttons that will look familiar to web users: Back (to the previous screen on this report), Forward (next screen), Stop (stops loading), Refresh (redraws the screen), and Print:

To change the language, click the down arrow in the language box. Then, highlight the desired language.

To change the currency, click the down arrow in the currency box, then highlight the desired currency:

NOTE: Currency conversion is tied to the Microsoft currency conversion rates.

8. The Product Search lets you look up details on any one product. If you can’t seem to find the item you are looking for, click on the product type link on the left (like Archwire), then select the narrower category on the right (like Nickel-Titanium):

The next screen will show several pages (the links at the top, 1-8 in the example shown).

Order History

If you answered “Yes” to the question in step 8 above, the order(s) you just placed will be moved from Final Order to the Order History window, which is on the lower left of the Ordering tab. Like in the final order window, orders are shown according to this scheme:

1. Alphabetically by patient name.

2. Within each patient, they are shown in chronological sequence, the oldest at the top.

Here is what you may do with orders in the order history window:

View: Click the + sign to the left of a patient’s name or to the left of an order date to expand and view details, the – sign to collapse

Print: Clicking the Print button below the order history window will pop up a preview window of your entire order history. On that window, scroll to the bottom and click the “Print Invoice” button to print your entire order history.

Delete: Just like in the final order window, you may delete any one item within an order, or an entire order, or all orders for one patient. If the item you deleted was the only item in that order, then the entire order will be removed from the order history window. If the order you deleted was the only order for that patient, then that patient’s name will also be removed from the order history window.

DentalCAD Changes

Model Analysis InstructionsNOTE: The screen captures used in this document were created on a computer running Windows Millennium with an Epson 1680 Professional Edition Scanner.

1) Open POSoft.

2) Launch DentalCad by selecting the “Analysis” option located under the “Program” menu or choose the Analysis button (Figure 2-1).

Figure 2-1

3) Open the desired patient record. Make sure that the patient’s name shows up in the “Patient Information” window in the upper left (Figure 3-1).

Figure 3-1

4) Once you have opened DentalCad for a particular patient, the next step is to create a digital image of your model and import it into DentalCad. Before you begin, make sure you have the following items available:

a. POSoft 3.1.

b. A flatbed scanner connected to your computer. Flat bed scanners of any kind are needed to develop the exact one-to-one image to be measured. Also, you do NOT need a transparency adaptor to scan models into the program.

c. The model

5) Proceed to the following sections to learn more about the new features in DentalCad:

Scanning the Model Image Directly into DentalCad

If you are not comfortable using Adobe Photoshop or other types of image manipulation software, you can scan your models directly into the program. Read below to learn how! NOTE: Cephs or models that are scanned directly into DentalCad are created in a format that is not recognizable by the POSoft – Pictures Tab and other software programs such as, Adobe Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro.

1) Make sure your scanner is on. Place a white paper on the scanner glass to reduce the size of the scan area and to make a better “contrast” on the study models. This piece of paper will also serve to make a horizontal reference for the “heel” of the study model. You want the study models oriented straight vertical so you do not have to rotate archwires when they are placed on the image. On the white sheet of paper, write “lower” on the right side, and “upper” on the left side of the paper, so you can consistently orient the study models, although the program functions the same no matter which way the models are oriented.

2) Put the study models face down on the glass with the incisors facing the hinge of the scanner top. Check to be certain that the midline of the study models is facing straight “up” on the glass. Also look from the heel of the study model, under the palate to see that they are oriented properly. Reference the horizontal line made by your “reference paper”, described above.

3) To begin the scanning process, click the “Acquire image” button (Figure 3-1)

Figure 3-1

DentalCad will display a list of available imaging devices connected to your computer. Highlight your scanner and click “Select” (Figure 3-2).

The scanner software will now open. For Epson 1680 Professional Edition scanner, choose the exact settings as in Figure 3-3 below. These settings will be similar on various types of scanners.

Figure 3-3

NOTE: The scan can be made at a higher quality (300dpi) and the filter in DentalCAD will adjust the size accordingly. We suggest higher quality scans for model analysis since detail is extremely important.

4) Click “Preview” (see Figure 3-3 above). A “Preview” window will appear with the model inside (Figure 4-1). If the study models are not properly oriented, then re-orient and click “Preview” again.

NOTE: Previewing the image will NOT import the model into DentalCad

Figure 4-1

5) The preview window allows you to define what part of the image you actually want to scan. Identify the area you want scanned by dragging a box around the study models. The tool used to do this is called the “Marquee Tool”. To use the marquee tool, place your mouse over the image, hold down the left-click button and drag it in a certain direction (left, right, up, down or diagonal) as in Figure 5-1 below. Continue to drag your mouse until the study models are inside the box. Now, let go of your mouse. You will see a dotted line surrounding the study models as in Figure 5-2. Only the area inside the marquee area (the dotted-lined box) will be imported into DentalCad.

NOTE: You can move the entire box by pointing your mouse inside the dotted line. Once you see the mouse

pointer change its appearance to a hand , left-click your mouse, hold it down and drag the box in a certain direction.

6) Click “Scan” to import the model image into DentalCad. The scanner software will display a progress meter as in Figure 6-1. The progress bar will disappear once the scanner has completed the job.

Figure 6-1

7) Click the “Close” button to close the scanner software and go back to DentalCad. Proceed to page 9 to begin the model analysis.

NOTE: If you are not satisfied with how the image looks in DentalCad and would like to re-scan it, delete the image by right-clicking it and choosing “Delete” (Figure 7-1). Once you have deleted the image, click “Acquire Image” to start the scanning process over.

Scanning the Model Image into Adobe Photoshop

An advantage to scanning your cephs or models into Adobe Photoshop (or some other Photo Management software) is that you are able to control the format of the image. This can be advantageous if you want to import these images into the POSoft – Pictures Tab or other programs. Read below to learn how to scan your models into Adobe Photoshop.

1) Open Photoshop. Click File – Import and then choose your scanner.

Figure 1-1

The scanner software will now open. For Epson 1680 Professional Edition scanner, choose the exact settings as in Figure 1-2 below. These settings will be similar on various types of scanners.

Figure 1-2

NOTE: The scan can be made at a higher quality (300dpi) and the filter in DentalCAD will adjust the size accordingly. We suggest higher quality scans for model analysis since detail is extremely important.

Figure 2-1

3) The preview window allows you to define what part of the image you actually want to scan. Identify the area you want scanned by dragging a box around the study models. The tool used to do this is called the “Marquee Tool”. To use the marquee tool, place your mouse over the image, hold down the left-click button and drag it in a certain direction (left, right, up, down or diagonal) as in Figure 3-1 below. Continue to drag your mouse until the study models are inside the box. Now, let go of your mouse. You will see a dotted line surrounding the study models as in Figure 3-2.

6) Select the “Save” option located under the “File” Menu (Figure 6-1)

Figure 6-1

7) The “Save As” window will appear. Save the file in a place where it is easy to find. Creating a folder for each of your patients in your “My Documents” folder is a good way to organize your patient files. Also, make sure to name the file in a way that you’ll know exactly what it is without having to open it (Figure 6-2). This will save you time when you import the image into POSoft and/or DentalCad.

Figure 6-2

Click “Save”. Repeat steps 1-6 of this chapter to continue scanning your models. When you are finished, close Adobe Photoshop and proceed to page 9 of this document to begin the model analysis.

4) Position the image on your screen so that the lower occlusal is completely visible (figure 4-1). You are now ready to begin the model analysis.

Figure 4-1

The points and what to do with missing teeth

See Figure 4-2 below for a graphical representation of where the points should approximately be placed.

For the mesial (M) and distal (D) point positioning, select the contact point, where you feel the tooth should be in contact with the adjacent tooth. After positioning the point and clicking F2, you must “move” the cursor slightly to get the next point to move into view. Then you must move to the new point (sometimes the exact same point as the previous point if mesial and distal of adjacent teeth are the same) to the new position.

On the lower molars, the 36B and 46B are the buccal pits of the lower first molars, where you would place a filling. This is used in the maxillary expansion measurement. On the upper molars, 16C and 26C are the mesial-buccal “cusp” tips, used in the maxillary expansion measurement. There are points used to position the teeth onto the IP archwire shape, allowing us to determine the amount of incisor advancement by each archwire selection (assuming the cortical bone will tolerate our selection). These points are: 16B, 15B, 14B, 24B, 25B, 26B, 35B, 34B, 44B, 45B. Place these where the “bracket” would be placed, if visible.

NOTE: All points and archwires need to be placed on the model image in order to calculate the model measurements (Arch length Discrepancy, Asymmetry, Mixed dentition, etc.). If you forget to place a point or archwire and click “Calculate”, DentalCad will generate the following messages (Figure 14-3, 14-4).

Figure 14-3 Figure 14-4

The meaning of the model measurements

The measurements for upper and lower 2-2 are listed. These are used for the archwire loop widths and for the mixed dentition analysis, if your case is a mixed dentition case. The sum of these measurements is the next line.

The choices of archwires are listed and you may use this when ordering your archwires.

The upper arch length discrepancy is the amount of crowding (positive +), or space (negative (-)) number.

The upper and lower expansion measurements are the molar widths, used in the maxillary expansion calculation. Normal upper width is 1.5mm wider than the lower. This can be used to diagnose maxillary constriction, and the amount of expansion needed when using a Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE).

Fitting the teeth to the archwire

If you do not believe the amount of incisor advancement, or the amount of crowding, click to turn off the x-ray and vectors and then click on the “Fit Teeth To Archwire” (Figure 15-1).

Figure 15-1

Figure 15-2 (X-ray turned off – This is what you’ll see BEFORE clicking “Fit Teeth To Archwire)

After you click “Fit Teeth To Archwire”, you will see overlap or space at the midline. All the teeth move EXCEPT for the first molars that remain stationery and EXCEPT for de-rotation to fit the archwire, which of course may create more space. In treatment, of course, we do the same with the molar.

Figure 15-3 (X-ray turned off – This is what you’ll see AFTER clicking “Fit Teeth To Archwire)

StructuresThe placement of structures in DentalCAD’s cephalometric analysis has changed. You now click on multiple points to create the outline of any of the structures. This makes it easier to more accurately represent the shape of that structure. Each click places a point that represents the starting point, curvature, a named point, or the end of the structure. After you have clicked the last point, the structure will show up with all the points and handles, allowing adjustment of any detail if needed.

Examples

Symphysis: Starting point is menton

Mandible: Starting point is “labial to lower 1”, which is the crest of the bone in front of the lower incisor

Upper profile: starting point is “soft tissue nasion”

Maxilla: starting point is “labial upper 1”, which is the crest of the bone in front of the upper incisor

Lower profile: starting point is lower stomion
