Positive Attitude-The Secret Weapon to Better Health!
It’s easy to see how being happy, upbeat and optimistic can make you fun to be around and a good friend,
but did you know that a positive attitude can actually help you to be healthier?
In a recent article published by the Mayo Clinic, a clear relationship is drawn between positive mental attitude and
numerous health benefits, including:
Increased life span
Lower rates of depression
Lower levels of distress
Greater resistance to the common cold
Better psychological and physical well -being
Reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease
Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress
One explanation for these benefits is that having a positive outlook helps you to cope better with stressful situations,
which reduces the harmful effects of stress on your body. Another is that positive and optimistic people tend to live
healthier lifestyles — they get more physical activity, follow a healthier diet, and have reduced rates of smoking and
alcohol consumption.
Whatever the reason, positive people seem to live longer, healthier lives – try it and see how it works for you! Here are
some tips on how to be more positive:
If your self-talk tends to be more negative, it doesn’t mean you’re doomed to an unhappy or unhealthy life. You can
learn to transform negative thinking into positive thinking. The process is simple, but it takes time and practice — you’re
creating a new habit, after all. Here are some ways to think and behave in a more positive way:
Check yourself. Periodically during the day, stop and evaluate what you’re thinking. If you find that your thoughts are
too negative, try to find a way to put a positive spin on them.
Be open to humor. Give yourself permission to smile or laugh, especially during difficult times. See humor in everyday
occurrences. When you can laugh at life, you feel less stressed.
Follow a healthy lifestyle. Exercise at least three times a week to positively affect mood and reduce stress. Follow a
healthy diet to fuel your mind and body. And learn to manage stress.
Surround yourself with positive people. Make sure those in your life are positive, supportive people you can depend on
to give helpful advice and feedback. Negative people, those who believe they have no power over their lives, may
increase your stress level and may make you doubt your ability to manage stress in healthy ways.
Practice positive self-talk. Start by following one simple rule: Don’t say anything to yourself that you wouldn’t say to
someone else. Be gentle and encouraging with yourself. If a negative thought enters your mind, evaluate it rationally
and respond with affirmations of what is good about yourself.
By recognizing the patterns of positive thinking and choosing to be upbeat and optimistic, you enhance the likelihood
of health and happiness – spread the word!

-Chiropractic Testimonies-
“I decided to go to the chiropractor after I had exhausted all other help such as physical therapy,
rehab, my general doctor, and surgery. Some of the biggest struggles I faced was instability while
walking, lower back pain throughout the day, and my right knee becoming worse and worse! After seeking
chiropractic care, I can sleep better and longer; I have
easier movement in my lower legs and more stamina. I’m now more hopeful about small improvements in
my quality of life!”
“I felt a chiropractor would have understanding of the
issues that I was afflicted with since my vehicle accident, and after I received a referral, I chose to go
to Dr. Pettinato’s office to seek help. I once had tightness and pain due to the accident and stress. Now,
I am pain free with no tightness and a renewed
motivation to exercise! I focus less on muscle tension and am more comfortable!”

"Help! I have pain in my knees and I have been told there
is nothing I can do apart from taking painkillers and rest.
"Knee pain is an increasingly more common problem in our society and as a result we see
more and more patients with knee problems.”
The most common complaints relate to 'wear and tear' or osteoarthritis and although a condition such as osteoarthritis is not curable, the symptoms can be reduced and the progression of the problem can be helped
thanks to our unique approach to treatment. Chiropractic treatment is also very effective for many other knee problems. Chiropractic treatment may well be the answer if knee pain is limiting your day-to-day or sporting
activities, if you have been given painkillers and been told to rest with no long-term improvement, or you have
been told you have arthritis and there is nothing that can be done? The knee is a complex joint that relies heavily on ligaments and muscles for stability. The knee is a
major weight bearing joint and is composed of: The tibio-femoral joint (between the thigh and lower leg)
the patello-femoral joint (between the knee cap and the thigh), muscles and ligaments, which gives
active and passive stability to the knee. Two ring shaped cartilage discs in the knee, called the menisci
(one meniscus).
Examination of the Knee Joint When pain is perceived as coming from the knee, all the anatomical components need to be examined and in addition to the knee joint, the low back, pelvis, hip, ankle and foot
need to be examined due to the direct influence they have on the knee, and vice versa. As chiropractors we take a comprehensive medical history and perform a thorough physical and biomechanical examination in order to make an accurate diagnosis - without an accurate diagnosis, the treatment will not be successful.
Our approach of assessing and treating the knee includes the evaluation of the other joints and muscles
relating to the knee.
This is for several reasons: Firstly, pain can be referred from other structures in the low back, pelvis and hip into the knee, in certain conditions. Secondly, if other joints in the lower limb are not working correctly they
can put increased stress on the knee joint, resulting in injury over time. Therefore to resolve the knee pain chiropractors may also treat other areas, to maximize long-term improvement.
Chiropractic Treatment for Knee Pain
We have outlined the process of our treatment below to give you an idea of our approach. We would normally modify the treatment to suit each patient and their specific conditions. So the type of treatment that is most appropriate for one person is not necessarily right for another.
Stage 1: Reduce joint inflammation and reduce pain. How? Avoidance of aggravating factors, use of a support, sports tape
Ice to reduce inflammation, muscle spasm and pain Soft tissue healing: laser, ultrasound and interferential therapy Stage 2: Normalize joint function
How? Specific chiropractic manipulation and mobilization techniques to areas of restricted movement in the knee and surrounding joints, to increase movement, improve the function and reduce pain
Deep soft tissue massage, trigger-point therapy and cross-friction. Stage 3: Use of Supportive Brace
Why? To protect the knee from re-injury allow a higher level of performance
Stage 4: Rehabilitation exercise program When appropriate we introduce exercises to improve strength, endurance and stability. We also work on
improving your balance and your sense of joint position (proprioception). This will help you to return to normal and also prevent new injuries.

5 Tips for Healthy Skin
These 5 tips from the Mayo Clinic:
o Protect your skin from sun exposure, which causes wrinkles, age spots, or more severe skin concerns. Use sunscreen, seek shade and wear protective clothing.
o Don’t smoke. Smoking causes hypoxia (low oxygen levels), constricted blood vessels, depleted skin nutrition, and damaged collagen and elastin which, at best, causes wrinkles.
o Treat your skin gently. Limit bath time because extended hot showers or baths strip the natural oils from your skin. Keep the water warm, not superhot. Choose mild and natural soaps for your skin because harsh detergents are drying. Pat dry instead of rubbing and use a daily moisturizer.
o Eating a balanced, healthy diet daily can help you look and feel your best. Fuel up with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Eat Omega 3 fatty acids.
o Manage stress. This might seem off-the-wall, but uncontrolled stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. To encourage healthy skin, take steps to manage your stress. Set reasonable limits, scale back your to-do list and make time to do the things you enjoy. The results might be more dramatic than you expect.
