Page 2: POSITIONS OPEN Science Careers Classified Advertising · Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine Applications are invited for an Eminent Schol-ar at the Associate

Ruhr University Bochum invites applications for the positions of three Young Professors

(W2) to constitute a Mercator Research Group on the “Structure of Memory”.

Understanding the mechanisms underlying memory is perhaps the greatest challenge

facing modern neuroscientists. Fostering excellence in research, Stiftung Mercator

(www.stiftung-mercator.de) intends to establish a novel research group on the topic of

semantic and episodic memory that integrates the areas of neuroscience, cognitive

psychology, medicine, neurobiology and philosophy.

Animal brain imaging, coupled with innovative animal models of learning, and electro-

physiology will be integrated with philosophy of mind to attain a new understanding of

the structures, mechanisms and theory of memory in an approach that extends beyond

the traditional borders of the neurosciences. Three young professors will spearhead

this initiative and form an independent research team supplied with state-of-the-art

infrastructure and funds. They will be accompanied by a senior (emeritus) researcher

(one per year), of their choosing, who through his/her extensive experience can act as

a mentor and advisor for the independent research of the young professors.

Professorship 1

The Functional Architecture of Memory

The main focus of this research unit will be the analysis of the functional organisation

and interaction mechanisms of structures relevant for semantic and episodic-like

memory formation in the brains of lower mammals. The development of innovative

animal models at the behavioural level that can be combined with experiments in high

resolution in vivo brain imaging analysis of memory processing will comprise a key

element of the research strategy.

Professorship 2

The Neurobiology of Memory

This research unit will integrate electrophysiological approaches up to the single cell

level with brain imaging strategies to address the neurobiological basis of memory.

Comparative analysis through brain imaging in lower mammals and/or primates can be

part of this goal. Investigations of the role of synaptic, neuronal and network plasticity

in semantic and episodic-like memory formation and the investigation of affected struc-

tures using animal brain imaging in vivo will comprise a key component of research.

Professorship 3

The Theory of Memory

This research unit will have its origins in the area of the philosophy of mind. Its goal

will be to develop an integrative theory of experience-dependent cognitive processes. The

unit will work theoretically but will have strong interdisciplinary links in the area of

neuroscience, particularly in the area of human brain imaging. It will work closely with

the young professors within the “Structure of Memory” programme but also with further

neuroscientists on campus.

The research programme will be supported with funding of ca. 7 million Euro over a six

year period. A newly acquired 7-Tesla magnetic resonance spectroscope for in vivo animal

analysis will be provided for the research work of these projects. An on-site 1.5-Tesla

brain imaging unit for primate or human studies will also be available on campus.

Extensive facilities for animal electrophysiology as well as all further aspects of neuro-

science are well established at Ruhr University. The research groups will be based

at the Center for Synergic Neurosciences of Ruhr University Bochum. Further details

can be viewed at www.rub.de/csn, or by contacting Prof. Onur Güntürkün, Prof. Denise

Manahan-Vaughan or Prof. Albert Newen at Ruhr University Bochum.

The Mercator Young Professorships will be appointed at the W2 Professor level for an ini-

tial period of six years (starting date: early 2009). The professorships are particularly tar-

geted at young neuroscientists at an early stage of their careers, but who have reached a

qualification profile that enables research independence. Successful candidates will be in-

tegrated into the transfacultative neuroscience landscape of Ruhr University. For the two

empirical young professors proven track records in the area of innovative neuroscience

research is required. The candidates for the position in the philosophy of mind should

have a proven track record of relevant interdisciplinary papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Stiftung Mercator is one of

Germany’s largest foundations.

It initiates and funds projects

that promote better educa-

tional opportunities in schools

and universities. In the

spirit of Gerhard Mercator,

it supports initiatives that

embody the idea of open-

mindedness and tolerance

sharing of knowledge and

culture. The foundation

provides a platform for new

ideas to enable people –

regardless of their national,

cultural or social background

– to develop their personality,

become involved in society

and make the most of

the opportunities available

to them. Stiftung Mercator

takes an entrepreneurial,

international and professional

approach to its work.

It has a particular affinity

with the Ruhr area, the home

of its founding family.

traditional boundaries of

academic subjects and depart-

ments. Host to 32,600 students

and 4,700 staff, the University

is a vital institution

of the region and one of the

pillars of the University

Alliance Metropolis Ruhr.

Ruhr-Universität Bochum

Applications, including a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a statement of research interests, and a research concept, must be sent electronically by 15th

September, 2008 to: Prof. Dr. Elmar W. Weiler, Rector of Ruhr University Bochum, re: Mercator Research Group “Structure of Memory”, Ruhr-Universität Bochum,
