Position Description - Stepping Into Program Position Title Department of Environment and Energy – Australian Antarctic Division Intern Location Hobart Position Duration 152 hours Commencing June / July Position Overview The Business and Property Services Group (BPSG) provides leadership and strategic direction in environmental and WHS management with particular emphasis on implementing and maintaining management systems, building a positive environmental and safety culture and supporting continual improvement in performance across all aspects of the Australian Antarctic Program. The BPSG provides oversight of audits and systems reporting including regular and annual reporting to ensure ongoing compliance with AS/NZS 14001:2016 for Environmental Management Systems and AS/NZS 4801:2001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, as well as legislative compliance. Position Overview

The Business and Property Services Group (BPSG) provides leadership and strategic direction in

environmental and WHS management with particular emphasis on implementing and maintaining

management systems, building a positive environmental and safety culture and supporting

continual improvement in performance across all aspects of the Australian Antarctic Program. The

BPSG provides oversight of audits and systems reporting including regular and annual reporting to

ensure ongoing compliance with AS/NZS 14001:2016 for Environmental Management Systems

and AS/NZS 4801:2001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, as well as

legislative compliance.

Major tasks of the role

1. Research and identify legislation applicable to AAD activities (using the AAD intranet, e-

records, online lawlex registers and contacting AAD work groups).

Understand AAD activities

Discuss activities with work groups/Managers.

Research legislation and Standards that are/could be applicable.

Source AAD operating procedures and match with applicable legislation.

Identify compliance and review with work group/Managers.

2. Update the legislative compliance status of the Environmental aspects and WHS hazards

registers (Excel spreadsheet).

3. Update and review the Environmental and WHS compliance directory (Word document).

AS/NZS 14001:2016 for Environmental Management Systems.

AS/NZS 4801:2001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.

4. Draft the AAD Safety and Environment Newsletter, July/August 2018 (Word document).

Collect articles and committee minutes (from various AAD members).

Draft document (template provided).

Research information and/or review articles as required.

Circulate to team for review and comment.

Forward final document to Manager(s) for approval.

Major Project for Placement

Verification and documentation (compliance directory and registers) of conformity to standards

AS/NZS 14001:2016 for Environmental Management Systems and AS/NZS 4801:2001 for

Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.

This work will help the student understand the broader context of the Division, especially in relation

to protecting and managing the WHS and environmental aspects of Australia’s activities in the

Antarctic, sub-Antarctic and Australia.

The AAD Business and Property Services Group is team based, with the opportunity to work on

set tasks individually (with assistance from the supervisor) and provide feedback/suggestions as

appropriate.

The Environmental / WHS registers require individual program management, such as

setting own priorities and organising meetings with key stakeholders across the AAD and

within the AAD BPSG.
