BirdyBirdy would be an appropriate artist to feature in Maverick as she represents the female minority that has gotten noticed in the music industry, its also particularly hard for women to be successful in Indie Rock music. She is known for her cover of ‘Skinny Love,’ my target audience can relate to this song as it details about love that essentially has gone sour; the sort of love that’s destructive and unsustainable.

What is interesting about Birdy is that she has the certain quality males are drawn to, she is timid and feminine yet strong and expressive in the music she creates. The male target audience will automatically be drawn to females as they are historically known for being nurturing and welcoming, therefore having a female artist included in Maverick may increase sales as well as readership, (young women may become interested).

Jake BuggJake Bugg is also an excellent example of someone who would be featured in Maverick as he has the whole ‘bad boy’ persona that contributes to the Maverick character. He smokes, he doesn’t care about other peoples opinions, he is consumed in making ‘decent’ music and says what he thinks (with no filter). He is what the male target audience would aspire to be like as he is definitely independent and authoritative!

His song ‘Two fingers’ explains his whole approach to life , that you’re young, you make mistakes and the best way to cope with it is to stick two fingers up to yesterday and forget about it.

Ben HowardBen Howard is also popular among the Indie Rock scene. He expresses the laid back attitude. He self-released his depute EP ‘Games in the Dark’ this shows that he is also an independent artist that isn’t singed to any major record labels.

His song ‘keep your head up’ is essentially urging the target audience of Maverick never to loose themselves in relationships to find themselves. He is known for his unique approach to making music, he didn’t go on some TV show to get noticed. Even though it did take several years to get noticed he did it by himself which is much more rewarding. Once again this shows that even though the process is going to be hard and long the end result is beautiful. This encourages people to be hardworking and modest about their achievements.

The MaineThe Maine would be an ideal band to feature in Maverick as they are an American band. This will open up the target audiences minds and add to their knowledge about indie rock bands. The Maine are different from any other Indie Rock band as they produce vinyl records of their albums as well as the more conventional downloadable copies and CDs.

They also are in the process of producing an acoustic EP called ‘Imaginary Numbers’ this is completely different and unexpected as you wouldn’t associate acoustics as indie rock. This shows how far they are prepared to go against the conventions of Indie Rock music in order to express themselves as well as increase their reputation of being an individual indie rock band and not in the same bracket as all the other mundane indie bands trying so desperately to be different.

The KooksThe kooks are another key band that would feature in Maverick. This is because they are one of the first British indie rock bands to form before it became popular to do so. They were heavily inspired by The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Police and David Bowie.

Even though they signed with virgin records they were reluctant to follow the schedules put in place to record an album straight away. Realizing what they did they wanted to break away from it and focus more on their song writing and live performances. This shows the audience not to get too big headed and wait before they make any major decisions. They are a typical British Indie Rock band that many will recognise.

Justin Vernon

Justin Vernon was the founding member of Bon Iver, an indie rock/folk band. He has influenced other musical artists such as Birdy to write their own music. He is one of the best artists to feature in Maverick.

At the Grammys his band won best alternative album and he won the best new artist award. This is particularly helpful as people will recognise him featuring in Maverick, this will increase readership and the magazines exclusivity. Their song Holocene has an extremely unique sound (it can be described as the sound of angels) it is stunningly beautiful. The meaning has a significant impact on the target audience as it reminds them to stay humble and to forget about making it to the top and look behind see who they have hurt, forgotten or stepped on in the process

The Foals

The foals are an inspirational band to feature in Maverick . They are another English Indie rock band. They described themselves as ‘an accidental band.’

This will persuade the target audience of Maverick to form bands of their own and just have fun with making music. This unorganized nature expresses spontaneity as well as a Maverick nature. Everyone wants to impress others its part of human nature, so naturally the target audience will want to be cool and adapt to this Maverick attitude.
