Portugal Empire
Portugal dates back as a world power from the 15th to the 16th century.
As Portugal lost its trade monopoly, so did it lose power to English, France, and the Dutch.
It is one of the longest lived European Empire, and the first as a global, colonial empire.
Empire History Portuguese empire known as the
Overseas Empire or the Colonial Empire.
Control spanned from Africa to Brazil. The outposts and colonies provided
much wealth to the empire. Empire ended in a string of
independence declarations across the colonies.
Gold Portugal had a strong fascination for
gathering gold. Most gold collecting in the colonies
was done by slaves. Gold had to be sent back to the
Portuguese government as a tribute. Portuguese settlers would fight off
natives just to keep their establishments for gold.
