Dedication
I dedicate this little literal work to my children because they are my strength of inspiration
in most of the things I do, and also to all those who play a huge significant role in my life.
Additionally, to those who direct and indirectly helped me to write this booklet.
Acknowledgement
First and foremost I thank Jehovah God for being always with me in my ups and downs. My
thank also goes to those who believed I would come up with this booklet.

Cães /‘cãis/: dogs
ão=am /ãu/
Dão: give (for “they” and “you-plural”)

A minha mãe me ama muito. (My mother loves me so much)
õe /õi/
Compõe /com’põi/: compose (for subject pronouns ele and ela)
Nacões /na’sõis/: nations
As in English, the vowels have to be combined with the consonants in order to have a word.
For example: m + a = ma
So let’s just put in mind that in Portuguese, the vowels don’t change the sound so often as
they do in English.
Study the following exceptions:
O at the end of a word sounds “u”
Example: Prato /prátü/: plate, dish
Livro /lïvru/: book
Bruno /brunu/: name of somebody
O when used as a definite article sounds “u”. Normally when we are starting a clause. In
other words, when it’s not linked with any other letter.
Example: O livro esta na mesa. (The book is on the table)
It is also used before a proper noun, unlike in English where we are not allowed to do so,
for example we can’t say the Maria is beautiful, but in Portuguese we have to the article (o
and a) when preceding a proper noun.
Example: O Tuba não conhece aquele jovem com o qual ele esteve a conversar. (Tuba
doesn’t know that guy to who he was talking)
A Marta é muito jovem para se casar com aquele senhor. (Marta is very young to get
married to that man)
E when is alone, that is, not linked with any other letter sounds ‘i’ normally when it’s used a
conjunction to mean ‘and’
Example: A Sharonrose e o Tuba não são do mesmo país. (Sharonrose and Tuba are not
from the same country)
Note: s between two vowels sounds z
Casa /kaza/: house
S after ran and before any vowel sounds z
Example: trânsito /trãzitu/: traffic
transar /trãzar/: to have sexual intercourse
C with a (,) under it sounds s
Example: trançar /transar/: to plait, to braid, to twist
Ele não começou bem. (he didn’t start well)
O meu pai foi à caça. (my father went to hunt)
S followed by a consonant sounds sh and sometimes j
Example: Transporte /transhporte/: transport
Especial /eshpecial/: special
Desde /dejde/: since
Transmitir /tranjmitir/: to transmit
The letter e followed by x and a vowel is pronounced z
Exemplo /ezémplu/: example
Exercicio /ezercíciu/: exercise
Exame /ezáme/: exam
Other sounds which may confuse you.
qu + a = qua /kua/ ex: quanto /kuántu/: how much; quarto /kuartu/ bedroom
qu + e = que /ke/ ex: querido (a) /ke’ridu/: dear; quente /‘kente/: hot
qu + i = qui /ki/ ex: quintal /kin’tal/: compound; quimica /‘kiminka/: chemestry

Note: normally the possessive adjectives (possessive pronouns in Portuguese) are followed
with a definite article ‘the’ which in Portuguese are ‘o, a, os, as’ when they are not followed
with a preposition which will be discussed later.
Meu… o meu caderno
Minha… a minha cama
In the third person of singular and plural, the possessive adjectives can change to:

ago)
So, don’t confuse the usage of o seu, a sua, os seus, as suas…. They can either be used for
men or women depending now on the nature of the noun, that is, feminine, masculine,
singular, plural.
If the noun sounds feminine in singular the pronoun to be used is [(a) sua]
Example: a sua igreja esta muito lotada. (Her church is so crowded)
A Bárbara e a Carmen sairam com a sua sobrinha. (Barbara and Carmen went out with their
niece).
If the noun sounds masculine in singular the pronoun to be used is [(o) seu]

O meu padrasto disse-me (or me disse) para ir à cidade. (My step father told me to go to
town)
Eu comprei-te um computador. (I bought you a computer)
O meu vizinho disse-lhes (or lhes disse) para não venderem o carro. (My neighbour told
them not to sell the car)

Verbos (Verbs)

(Verbs are words that indicate the action practiced by somebody, an animal or something)
In order words, verb indicates something done by somebody or animal

What did he do? “He bought a new computer” so bought is the verb which means in
Portuguese comprou (for the 3rd person of singular he and she)
As in English, verbs in Portuguese in infinitive form have a characteristic
In English, a verb in infinitive is characterized by a preceding “to”
Example: to come (vir), to run (correr), to conquer (conquistar), to finish (finalisar, terminar,
acabar), to pull (puxar), to cook (cozinhar)
In Portuguese, a verb in infinitive is identified by the following suffixes: ar, er, ir, or

Negative form
In order for us to form the negative in any tense in Portuguese, we just need to use não
between the personal pronoun (eu, tu, ele, etc) and the verb.
Examples:
Eu não quero ir à escola porque está a chover. (I don’t want to go to school because it is
raining)
Eu não falo Inglês. (I don’t speak English)
A minha prima não estuda. (My cousin doesn’t study)
O meu pai não vive comigo. (My father doesn’t live with me)
Interrogative Form
In order for a verb to be conjugated in interrogative form we just put the question mark at
the end of the sentence although we only notice that it’s a question in speech
Examples:
És Namibiano? (Are you Namibian?)
Tu sabes conduzir? (Do you know how to drive?)
Note that in Portuguese we can just state the verb without the subject pronoun (eu)
Eu sou bonita or sou bonita. (I am beautiful)
Eu não quero ir à escola or não quero ir à escola. (I don’t want to go to school)
EXERCISES
Conjugate the following verbs in affirmative, negative and interrogative form of present
tense.

b) beber e) começar
c) almoçar f) Propôr
g) ligar k) roubar
h) escrever l) gritar
i) fechar m) limpar
j) cobrir n) obedecer
