the Summer track season in September. Our Club’s first ever Olympian Jess Thornton (was a member of the 4x400 relay team at the 2016 Olympics) has run a Commonwealth Games B qualifier time for the 200m and is training hard to improve on that.

One of our younger athletesImogen Stewart, recently broke a World Age record (12 year olds) in the 3000m track event in a time of 9.26 minutes. She also holds World Age records for 800m, 1500m & the mile. It’s always a pleasure to watch Imogen competing for our Club.

Our Club achieved 18 medals at the State relay Championships which held events for u14 up to Masters age groups. 10 were Gold, 5 were Silver & 3 were Bronze which was a great result from our 35 teams entered. The u16 girls 4x100 team also broke the State record.

Coaches and Senior athletes from the Club have been visiting Revesby Workers’ Little Athletics meets on a Friday evening to coach the young athletes. This has been very beneficial to the athletes as they learn new skills for different events.

The next few months will see our athletes compete in State & National Championships and it won’t be long until we hopefully see Jess racing at the Commonwealth Games in April.

AUSTRALIAN NATIVE ORCHID CLUB Liaison Director: John Rodwell The Orchid Club held its tenth annual Spring Sarcochilus Show during October with over 360 plants on display, this was despite one of our major growers having to cancel at the last minute due to illness

The venue of the Waratah, Gevillia and Acacia rooms proved to be a fantastic venue and the Club would like to express its sincere thanks to the board of the RWC for allowing us to have the use of the this fine venue. A number of office bearers from rival Sydney clubs mention how they would dearly love to have a similar venue rather the church halls etc that they had to make do with.

The title of Grand Champion Orchid was won by Scott Barrie who also won Champion Seedling Orchid and Champion Hybrid Orchid. Don Roberts took out the title of Reserve Champion Orchid, Champion Australian Any Other Orchid was won by Noel Bates. The Champion Novice/Intermediate Orchid was won by Rhonda Jackson and finally the Champion Species Orchid was won by Ian Lawson. Congratulations to all the winners and better luck next year to all who participated

and came away empty handed.

During the show a good number of visitors kept the entry staff and sales table busy, with the ease of parking and the nearness of the railway line a greater number of people attended this years show.

If anyone reading this journal is interested in joining this sub-branch club they will be made most welcome. Meetings are held in the Clubs McArthur room at 7.30 pm on the fourth Wednesday of each month between March and November. We have various guest speakers and monthly plant raffles with a bonus card draw of $10 if a member`s badge number is drawn and they are present at the meeting. At two of the monthly meetings we hold a members auction of plants that they would like to sell. Membership fees are $10 per year.

Further information can be obtained from Don Roberts President on 9771 5474 or Ian Lawson Secretary on 9773 6047 or from the Clubs web-site at RWANOC.com

Welcome back to a new and exiting 2018.

The 2017 President’s Trophy was contested by Anna and Mario Fabiani. Mario - being a terrible husband - didn’t let Anna win the game, so Anna ran away to the U.S.A. to talk to her lawyers - she wanted a divorce and to see Mario pennyless and move out! But then she realised he was just the better player on the night and all is forgiven.

We would like to thank Jean for all the hard work she puts in behind the scenes all year, especially for the presentation night dinner.

A new year is a great time for new members. Please invite your friends and neighbours to come and play.

BOWLS – LAWN (MENS) Liaison Director: Ian Stromborg

The final of the consistency singles championship was played 29th Oct. It was Jan Stiskala versus Peter Chown, who is having a great year after winning the Major Singles this year. Jan is no slouch & has won his share of championships at THE FIBRO. This was sure to be a tough game to win. 10 points must be won each end. 4 points for closest then ,3,2 ,1, for the next closest. Pete

started off well winning the first 3 ends(18-12) , then it was Jan’s turn & he won or drew the next 6 out of the next 7 seven ends to lead. (57-53).This must have scared Chownie because he put the foot down then & in a game that went on for another 17 ends he only surrendered the mat 4 times. Still a close match as Jan really kept his opponent honest, even getting a 9-1 game, not easy. Yes it was The Maestro’s day & Pete ran out a winner 156-124 certainly not a walkover by any means, but a very entertaining match.

The final of the Mixed Fours was also played on the same day as above between Dave Raper’s team of Lyn Gallant, Jan Calderon, Denis Gallant with Dave skip, up against Norma Gray, Pam Johanson, Laurie Wilson & skip Amir Kiyani. This was NOT a game of two halves, it was a game of 3 thirds & for the first two thirds Dave’s team were well in control, leading from the start & after 13 ends were in front 18-8 with only 8 ends to go. Just when you would think you were safe a change came over this game. Of those last 8 ends Amir’s team steamrolled his opponents & won 7 ends to come from 10 shots behind to lead with 30, while Dave’s team had a horror finish to only add 1 to their score, going down 30-19. Disappointing for the losers after that start but a great fightback by Amir’s team. As the saying goes “it’s never over till it’s over” or something. Congratulations!

Graffitti or just a doodler? We will call him “Sheldon”, he looks a bit like Sheldon (BBT). Had he been born of a later generation he may well have been a graffiti urchin or perhaps a street artist or he may have written “eternity” everywhere in his teens, or doodled “wot no---?” something or other on the nearest wall, but now in his later years as a mature law abiding citizen “Sheldon” just loves to DOODLE. Doodle anywhere, anytime, he will doodle on anything, tablecloth, doilies, placemats, & now, on the bowling green, with his chalk, on his teams or opponents BOWLS!!! It has become quite a passion for him as he doodles away between shots, doodling all sorts of things on the bowls. Big ones, short ones depending how good or how bad the shot was. They say Einstein was a doodler too. Don’t think he is another Einstein, but we think “Sheldon” is eternally searching for that Utopia, that Paradise, where he will be free as the breeze, able to do as he likes so that he can kick back & POLLY WOLLY DOODLE ALL THE DAY (oh dear).

The Final of the Major/Minor Pairs was played on 18/11/17. The last of our Majors for 2017. The teams were Laurie Wilson/Peter Chown versus Peter Taylor/Shane Matakaiongo (spiff). Unfortunately for Peter Taylor an engagement with a hospital surgeon put paid to his final hopes & Geoff (50 shades of gray) Britton had to fill in for him. Another gem of a game & although the losers won only 10 of the 25 ends played, still,

there was only THREE shots in it at the end. That’s amazing! Many one pointers in this game resulted in another win for Laurie & Chownie, who has had a great year.

It always pays to be early for appointments etc. but sometimes you can just go too far, just ask Jim Foster about that. It was going to be a special day for Jim at our Presentation Day set down for Dec 10th as he had to get a couple of trophies for championships that he won during 2017.He walked in the club all spruced up & dressed proudly in club colours, probably rehearsing his winners speech & quizically asked “er, when are the presentations taking place?”. The reply was “you’re a bit early Jim”. Oh, ok said Jim, how long? “Well you better sit down Jim, cause you are a week early, it won’t be till next Sunday the 10th.Today is 3rd.” Our Jim had got the dates a little mixed up. Should have gone to specsavers Jim?

Good luck to all our members & friends for 2018 & specially to Peter Taylor who, has had a rough time in hospital & we hope is out and about by the time you read this. Onya Pete.

This summer season is well underway, with the finals being played in March. Performances have been mixed, but we are having fun and that is what park cricket is about! Thank you to all the senior captains and junior coaches and managers who have done an excellent job in getting their teams on the field, representing the Club so proudly.

The Milo in2CRICKET programme had been running on Thursday afternoons at Marco Reserve from October until the Christmas break. While the numbers were few, the children were wonderful, as were their parents who participated keenly in the weekly program. Regrettably, our final session, which should have culminated in the pre-Christmas celebrations, with a free BBQ, other goodies and a visit from Santa – for all juniors – had to be cancelled because of the extreme heat on the day.

In late November the Over 40s team played the CBC Bank at Marco Reserve in a very enjoyable and high scoring match, with the mighty Workers going down by a very small margin. The FORCE – Fathers Of Revesby Cricket Eleven – are now focussing on their upcoming g trip (Early April) to Christchurch, NZ. for the next World Golden Oldies Cricket Festival.

We have been proudly enjoying the performances of our former junior cricketer, and now Australian women’s cricket star, Ashleigh (Ash) Gardner, and congratulate

her on her achievements. Well done Ash.

We hope everyone had a very happy Christmas and wish you all a bright and successful 2018.. Enjoy those backyard and beach cricket matches over the summer!

LADIES’ GROUP Liaison Director: Christine Butters

The Ladies’ Group meets every Wednesday morning from 9.30am – 11.30am in the Macarthur Room which is situated in Dixon Lane adjacent to the Revesby Workers Club. We are always happy to welcome new members who will enjoy the friendship and interesting guest speakers who regularly give presentations on many varied subjects. We also have a bus trip each month which is well attended.

In September we had a very interesting talk from a young lady from Coolaburoo Neighbourhood Centre on the perils

and pitfalls one can experience when purchasing items on the internet. One of the members shared her experiences on a recent trip to Perth via Broome and Shannon gave us an interesting insight into her aborigine ancestors, also showing some beautiful aborigine artefacts including her wonderful didgeridoo.

In October our bus trip took us to Wollongong with views of the lovely Sea Cliff bridge that spans out over the water at Stanwell Tops. Also in October we had a guest from The Nuclear Imagining Group. He spoke of the benefits of imagining as being very helpful in diagnosing some medical conditions. The menu for our Christmas lunch was decided on and also the Christmas bus trip which will be a Lunch Cruise. Steve from Bankstown Police Station spoke to us about personal safety and safety in the home.

We had a fashion parade which was successful for both sellers and purchasers. As a result we received $170, also a lovely necklet and handbag for future raffles. In November we had a fantastic bus trip to the Recycling Plant, Cristal came on board and gave us a great talk, she loves her job and is very knowledgeable. (Who knew rubbish could be so interesting) we then had lunch at Kemps Creek Bowling Club.

Also in November Susan Curd from Beautiful Minds at Bankstown Hospital told us the plans for assisting mental health clients in the area. It was decided to forgo the Kris Kringle gift at the Christmas party and instead to give the $10 to charity. On 29th November, local chiropractor and osteopath, Christopher Kelly gave us some excellent advice on caring for our backs and necks.

It was decided that the charity we would gift the Kris Kringle to would be the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse. On the 20th of December we ended the year with a lovely Christmas party in the Acacia Room at the Workers Club. Many thanks to Christine our Liaison Director and to the parent club for support and assistance throughout the year.

Adjudicated by Dennis and Christine, Peter Moore and Ben Morrison took home the prizes for guessing the average length of service by members of the Hawksbury Unit which is 8.348007 years. Catering was by the Mooney Mooney Club and as always was excellent. In 2018 we will be continuing our endeavours to procure floating docks for our two Rescue Vessels. REVESBY WRITERS Liaison Director: John Rodwell

On behalf of the members of the Revesby Writers, I wish you a happy and successful year. Our group invites those who made a New Year Resolution involving writing, to join us. Sometimes a little encouragement is needed to start the family history or that ‘best seller’. We understand that writing is sometimes a difficult and solitary task. You may have stopped writing and are ready to start again or would appreciate the opportunity to read your story aloud to an audience. Each month a topic is suggested for a short story or poem to be read at the next meeting, this sometimes is enough to renew the desire to write. You will be welcome at our meetings.

Plans have commenced to invite two guests during the year to share their knowledge and passion for writing and assist us to improve our creative writing skills. We have also commenced to selecting our stories for the next book. There will also be a celebration to thank and acknowledge Carney who has been a member of the Group for twenty years and was president for many years.

We meet the first Saturday of each month, except January and December. The

meeting is held in the Macarthur Room, 20 Dixon Lane, Revesby. Commencing at 1pm, finishing at 4pm. Parking is available and the meeting room is very close to the Revesby Railway Station.

TENNIS (JUNIOR) Liaison Director: Dennis HaywardThe Canterbury Bankstown Tennis Association’s Saturday morning Juniors competition during Term 4, 2017 was well attended. A lot of the Revesby Workers Junior players have advanced out of this competition and play in the Mid-Western competition or at this time of the year, Sydney Badge competition.

However, the juniors that played the Saturday morning competition enjoyed it very much and most celebrated after the trophy presentation in a Christmas Party with a “Hit the Target” from Tennis NSW and lots of games and food.

Results of the competition saw the following children do quite well:

Supercomp team of Emmanuela Viner and Cecelia Chenh came through from 3rd position to win the semis and compete in the finals. The girls’ team was narrowly beaten in a tie breaker finish. Danny Lien and James Papathanasiou had led the competition in points in this the top division, but were unfortunately beaten in the semis. A few nerves came into play I think. Both boys were the individual best for their position as well. Such a shame! Max Papathananasic was the winner of the individual best no 2 player trophy for his division.

In division 1, the team of Jerome Estephan and Bethany Robinson led on points throughout the competition. They played very well in the finals to take the winner’s trophy at the end. In division 2, the team of Alisa Greyze and Lucas Dona were the top scoring team throughout the competition. Luckily they held on and, in a tight finish, won through to the winner’s circle.

Any children wanting to play tennis next year contact us or register on line during the New Year period.
