Joe Keller- I see a guy who is keeping up appearances. He is doing whatever he can to keep up his economic standing to support his family. That includes choosing to ignore, consciously or subconsciously, the opportunities he would have to do the right thing. He is so tired, but doing his best not to show it.

Chris Keller- Civilian Chris is gentle, youthful, and seemingly innocent. This should clash with the stories told about him during the war. He has capacity for great pain that can and will surface at any moment, but is doing his best to keep up appearances.

Kate Keller- Kate wears her heart on her sleeve much more than anyone else in the family. She is very open about her desperate hope that Larry will return in spite of the conflict it creates with her husband and son. It is as if it is physically incapable for her to let go.

Ann Deever- Ann moves ahead, feels strongly about those she cares about, but not with reckless abandon. She is surprisingly mature for her age. A lot of people underestimate her because she is young and pretty, and at some level she knows that.

Jim Bayliss- Like Joe, Jim avoids truth for a more comfortable lie. He gives up on research to treat unchallenging suburban hypochondriacs. He knows about Joe’s guilt. He blames his wife instead of taking charge of his situation.

George Deever- George is nervous and neurotic. Throughout the play, his main conflict is seeing if he can stand on his own feet under the barrage from bigger personalities like Joe and Chris. I see him as pale and wide eyed.

Sue Bayliss (on right)- Sue, like really all of the characters, is focused on how to keep her financial situation good. To do that, she resorts to manipulation, of both her husband and Ann. She plays nice and polite, but is mostly in the game for herself.

Frank Lubey- He’s a bit clueless and charmingly naïve. He was lucky enough to miss the war. He doesn’t do much but make Larry’s horoscope. He doesn’t understand much outside of his own neighborhood.

Bert- A neighborhood boy. He is full of energy and has a wild imagination. He is basically any little white boy in any show not specifically about a little white boy. Anyone in the cast have a kid?

Lydia Lubey- Like her husband Frank, she is a bit clueless about the world. She’s kind of vapid and mostly hangs out at the Keller’s house to fiddle with their toaster.
