NewsCupcakes Inspired by Books

Who doesn’t enjoy reading? Irene Peleteiro-Paniagua in Year 8 absolutely loves it and after a very inspiring conversation we had in EAL on World Book Day, she decided to bake cupcakes, which were based on different books. Can you guess all of them?

Well done, Irene, for being so creative and baking the most delicious cupcakes ever!

NewsYear 11 Drama Exam

Last Friday, Year 11 Drama students performed their final practical exam. This means the students have now completed 60% of their overall GCSE. Extracts from Boys, Teechers and Chatroom were well received by an audience made up of teachers, parents, students and the examiner. NewsPi Day at PPS

Portland Place celebrated another successful Pi Day on Thursday 14th March - the day celebrating the famous mathematical and never-ending constant, pi. The year 7s, as per tradition, had brought (circular) pies into lessons and used these to investigate the meaning of pi and the relationship between the circumference and diameter of circles. The celebration culminated in the annual reciting the digits of pi competition in the hall. And what an exciting competition it was! The winner, Ryder Nayak, managed to recite a whopping 101 digits! What an achievement and testament to the power of memory and what you can do when you put your mind to something. Several other students also took part in the competition and deserve a mention. Please congratulate them all! Ryder Nayak, 101 digitsTom Hallam, 61 digitsMiyu Aikawa, 52 digitsLawton Ballbach, 32 digitsLana Tuite, 29 digitsMuhammad Javaid, 19 digitsEdwin Hounkanli, 5 digits In the other year groups, work was also focussed on pi at different levels; either through using a piece of string to check how many diameters needed to get around the circumference, or doing work with length of arcs or area of sectors. Thank you also to Rebecca Arrigoni, (year 9), Freya Francis-Baum and Jake Sampson (both year 10) who volunteered to make pies for their respective classes.

U13 Rugby Vs Radnor House

With several players unavailable for this match, PPS called upon the services of some of the year 7 players to make up a full squad of 13 players in this away match down in Teddington. Portland started well and showed from the start that they could carry the ball with speed and aggression. Fly-half Lloyd Day nearly broke through the defence and captain Nicolas Bartha made a number of drives through the midfield. Radnor were quick at the breakdown and managed to strip the ball on the floor on numerous occasions. With ball in hand they also had pace and size and forced Portland to make many desperate covering tackles. After 10 minutes the dam broke and Radnor scored a series of tries to go into the lead by 4 tries to nil.It is important to point out that PPS continued to compete and force Radnor to work hard for their tries. Just before the break Edwin Hounkanli scooped up a loose ball and wriggled free of the Radnor defensive line, sprinting 50 yards to score Portland’s first try. This buoyed the boys’ confidence and they continued to press hard in the second half with Day making a great break down the right wing only to be brought down a few metres from the line. Radnor infringed at the ruck and Teddy Faulkner crashed over from the penalty. The final score was 8-2 in tries, to Radnor, who deserved the win for their more open passing and well-drilled rucking. Portland fought hard and didn’t give up; instead they fought back to score two tries of their own. Man of the match: Lloyd Day, for his fast breaks with ball in hand and covering tackles through-out the game. Well done to all.

Girls’ Football

On Monday afternoon the U12s travelled over to Holloway to play North Bridge House at the Sobell Leisure Centre. The girls were enthusiastic and ready to win. NBH had a strong team so our girls had to work hard to compete. Just before half time Violet Brodie had a great shot on target but unfortunately was saved. In the second half, a strong pass across from Sumayyah Mahmoud found Lana Tuite who had a shot on goal, which was again saved by the NBH goal keeper. Towards the middle of the second half, PPS were awarded a penalty. Lana took the penalty and GOAL to PPS! NBH continued to fight and had a strong team; PPS just couldn’t get past their defenders and were struggling to keep the strong NBH attack at bay, losing eventually 7-1. Unlucky girls, great efforts. Player of the match went to Lana!

SportsNetball

Netball

On Wednesday afternoon, we took a mixed netball team over to the Sobell Leisure Centre to play against North Bridge House. This team had never really played together before, as it was a mix of Year 7, 8 and 9. The girls went out with smiling faces and a game plan for the match. Lana Tuite moved excellently around the court in the Centre position. She was always available, moved into space well and made some great passes. Violet Brodie was another champion throughout the game, her efforts, dodging and availability was fantastic to see. Lana and Violet worked well together in the attacking end of the court. Scarlett Willis scored an excellent goal in the first quarter after a pass from Lana. In the second and third quarters Beatrice Thompson played exceptionally well, the best seen this season. Her enthusiasm and energy to move around the court was very beneficial for the team. In defence, Manuela Poquet Serna and Polina Zaluzhskaya worked hard to keep the ball from going into the hoop. Manuela gained a lot of possession from rebounds and was extremely positive. The possession was quite even between the teams, unfortunately Portland Place just couldn’t score the points. This was quite an even game in terms of ability, but NBH took their chances better and eventually won 8-1. Player of the match went to Violet which I believe was well deserved! We look forward to playing North Bridge House in the summer term with rounders.

Cricket

London Youth Games U13 Indoor Cricket Finals

Year 6’s Isaac Meyer and his big brother Sam represented Westminster in the London Youth Games Indoor Cricket Finals at Lords earlier this month. The matches are played over 10 overs, with 8 players per side. Unfortunately, two of the Westminster squad showed up extremely late and so the team were forced to play with just 6 in their semi-final against Bromley, who have won this title three years consecutively. Westminster batted first, putting on 80 runs. Isaac was run-out for 18, whilst Sam retired on 20 – an excellent contribution from the pair. Bromley chased down the total in 8 and a half overs to win the match, meaning Westminster would not qualify for the nationals. The brothers should be congratulated for their efforts, with both bat and ball, as well as with the gloves. The pair were consoled with a guided tour of Lords, including the locker room, the museum and the media centre.
