What : A climbing gym and a bridgeWhere : Copenhagen, DenmarkWhen : 2013
The demands in dedicated artificial climb-ing structures are increasing in many countries with a low topography varia-tion. In Copenhagen, there is less than 10 gyms dedicated to this activity.
The selected site for this graduation project is at the crossroad of the sound of Baltic Sea and the Nyhavn canal in Co-penhagen. This area is at the center of three other surrounding climbing clubs, and thus commercially strategical. It also closes a loop set up by the danish archi-tecture center, which highlights several achievements and projects drawn by im-portant local and international offices.
(BIG, Lundgaard & Tranberg, MVRDV, OMA...) Until now, the place was blank, it was a piece of territory where nothing special happened and lacked connection with the water.
This program proposes a special point of view on the architectural dynamic which galvanises the city, while filling this striking blank and responding to in-creasing needs in this activity. The proj-ect also proposes a sort of showcase on climbing thanks to its specific location, as well as a panorama on the harbour for the climbers who ascend the differ-ent walls. It also offers an overview for the spectators who can walk around the building thanks to a slope within the fa-cade. This creates a whole new relation between the actor and the spectator.

What : A masterplan coupled with an architectural projectWhere : Basel, SwitzerlandWhen : 2013Masterplan in collaboration with : R. Barota / S. Holder / C. Takahashi
This masterplan is made of a landscape weaving, spread from South to North. At the southern part, low buildings and urban agriculture respond to the exist-ing blocks, whereas the northern part of the masterplan is made of high-rise volumes responding to the existing fac-tories. At the center, we find a bridge which connects the area to France and a whole new urban space powered by an in-termodal public transport station (tram, boat, car...). Here and there, some public equipments offer a void to this density.
A building such as a public swimming pool, combined with a library, needs an import-ant part of territory. This project pre-tends to be supported by the landscape, somehow it nearly becomes landscape. Slopes and green roof make an offset to the existing topography and allows the building to be walked through.
It converses with its both natural and artificial environment, and tries to sup-ply connections with the city and the Rhine. The programs slide one over the other. They are completed by a parking in basement, and a coffee which sells the production from the urban agriculture of the roof. This volume presents a cohe-sion despite the diversity and indepen-dence of its parts, thanks to straight and stretched lines.

What : A champagne bar on a river bankWhere : Paris, FranceWhen : 2014In collaboration with : S. Holder
At first sight, the site seemed to be re-ally appreciated by its users. We point-ed the necessity of treating the general area with respect, both from a heritage point of view and considering the ex-isting uses. The first idea was to keep the landscape accessible from the up-per platform along the Louvre. In this way, the main volume was maintained in a template, where the height is limited to the street railing. Our objective was to leave accessible the walkway along the river so the walkers could still en-joy this place as they used to. Thus, the lower slab was set up at a height that
allows the pedestrians to go by. The volume was also kept apart from the breast wall in order to keep a breath-ing between the bar and the wall, but also to maintain the existing trees.
The two slabs were pinched and shift-ed to enhance an impression of frame allover the landscape, while leaving the possibility of enjoying the same land-scape beneath the bar. Moreover, the roof was designed as a public space, generating an extra point of view on the historical bridges and the Seine. In brief, the project was thought as a wire which pretends to connect dif-ferent areas of the city by fetching the landscape. The bar stretches out along the river bank in order to enjoy the landscape the widest as possible.

What : Rehabilitation of an old factoryWhere : Bologna, ItalyWhen : 2014In collaboration with : V. Béthenod /J. Bolle-Reddat / C. Doléjal / G. Farbos / S. Holder
The existing building was defined by a particularly expressive architecture, which appears to be unconnected with its context. The factory was introverted because of its textile production. This function is now over and represents an opportunity to bring a new dynamic in the neighbourhood. One of the principal issues of the project was to open this new cultural space in order to change its image and its uses. The ground floor was redesigned to accept more transparen-cy, more openness, and an enhanced flow
between the exterior and the interior. A porch was set up at corner of the two main wings, and allowed us to create a new core for the construction : the patio. This action gave us the opportunity to connect all of the different spaces and bring light deep in the building. We orga-nized a flexible plan. In this way, sever-al parts of the program work together thanks to modular furniture. The space is inhabited by the users and their uses. In the continuity of this plan, we de-signed three terraces, which strengthen the conversation with the context. The former facade seemed very pragmatic for a factory : bring light and keep away the production from prying eyes. We chose to peel the functionalist envelop, in order to dress this industrial box with a light and perforated mesh.

What : An expo pavilionWhere : ?When : 2011In collaboration with : C. Doléjal
'Spaceship' was designed in order to re-spond to a set of issues with the idea to create a viable and aesthetic project. The constraints were thus considered from the start as strategical challenges so they could become advantages. The idea of the exercise was to create a pavilion which could be build with a CNC machine. This space is made of two sorts of wood-en layer : the first ones are continuous from the ground to the top, thus forming a general envelop, whereas the second ones form the link between the first ones and allows the pavilion to enjoy a zenith-al light, thanks to the gap between them.
The volume, looking like a shell, reveals the idea that the pavilion represents both an object and a living organism, at the same time sedentary and nomad. This princip also allows the pavilion to be in-tegrated in an urban or natural environ-ment. The outer envelop also forms the inner furniture.

What : A sculpture within the landscapeWhere : Andlau, FranceWhen : 2011In collaboration with : M. Bénichou / S. Holder
The founding idea of 'Skyline' is the fact that a landscape is almost always seen from a precise point of view. This is why we have set up this installation from a precise point, at the foot of a hill.
We wanted to play a game based on the depth of field, with several objects placed at a variety of distances, in or-der to highlight the fact that a skyline is the exact contrary of a simple line on an unique plan, but the result of an infinite assembly of points placed at different depths.
'Skyline' underlines the ridgeline with vertical elements made of dead wood-en sticks, handcrafted in order to make them differ from the natural canvas. It's an original way to understand how a nat-ural element can easily become artificial, but also to figure out how natural and artificial can cooperate within the land-scape.

What : A digital experimentationWhere : Delft, NetherlandsWhen : 2012In collaboration with : O. Poulat
Founded in 2008 and integrated to the TU Delft by Winy Maas, the Why? Factory is a research laboratory around the cities of the future. The 'Copy / Paste' work-shop was initiated after the following statement : we notice nowadays around the world that the architectural design is more and more frequently copied. Inter-net is partially responsible of the fast propagation ot the ideas, and it seems that conceptual design lacks of the spec-ificity of the handicraft. Copy is easy, fast and cheap. Many offices are now in crises, while innovation asks for time and patience. Copy / Paste was estab-
lished in order to propose a method to copy systematically, freely and without any guilt. Not only to recreate system-atically the same models through the world, but essentially to create hybrid species, new specimens, infanted by known models.
This workshop was based on determining the different species existing in archi-tectural design and their origins, in order to set up a family tree and try to invent new species. The species I worked on was the spherical volume. I tried to highlight the fact that a sphere is essentially an assembly of an infinity of points set at the same distance from a first one. I de-cided to pick up a piece of BIG's Kimball Art Center in order to create a sort of spherical and experimental architecture.

What : Urban design in a suburban spaceWhere : Vitrolles, FranceWhen : 2013In collaboration with : Bellastock team
In july 2013, the charitable organization Bellastock proposed to a hundred of students in design and architecture to invest the city of Vitrolles and its dis-trict 'Les Pins' in order to propose to its inhabitants to reinvest the public space through the construction of urban fur-niture.
The primary school 'Louis Pergaud' is lo-cated in the heart of the estate. It wel-comes children from the surroundings and is essentially accessible by foot. The square in front of it is an import-ant location in the district, but its gen-
eral layout does not offer an appropri-ate status to this possible articulation.
The main goal of our intervention was to propose a seat to the parents wait-ing for their children at the end of the day, but at the same time to maintain the necessary flows through the square and the possibility of setting up ephemeral installations. In this way, the project is established on three points at the rim of the square, trying to gain on the cen-ter of the space. It's a composition of 3 sorts of gabion bench of different sizes, sometimes associated with tables made of bathtub, sunshades or even small vegetable boxes. On the last day of the workshop, this new square was the place of an unique meeting between the inhab-itants, during a festal evening.

What : Photography in urban spaceWhere : Barcelona, Hamburg, Marseille...When : 2013-2014
Far from mastering the field, photog-raphy is however a discipline for which I feel lots of interest.
Traditional film, digital or even pinhole photographs, I like to try every kind of form possible. This activity allows me to understand better how light interferes with the subject, that is to say mostly architecture and by extension, cities.
I don't deliberately try to harmonize the shots I take, but I generally like to cap-ture facades, textures, perspectives, and lights of the cities I visit.
Sometimes I come back with a sort of catalogue of different cityscapes, build-ings or atmospheres I observed.
These few shots are essentially taken from my travels, in Barcelona, Hamburg or Marseille.

What : Personal visual identityWhere : ?When : 2014
Graphic design, as well as industrial de-sign, is one of the fields that calls out my interest for well-finished objects. At the end of my studies, during which I made my best to display my works the clearest and most presentable as possi-ble, I felt I had to do the same to intro-duce myself to the working world.
These few examples are the result of a visual identity research I made in order to present my character, my works and my experiences. I am however perpetu-ally trying to improve it, because I feel the purpose of an architect is to always do better.
This started with the design of a logo, which I believe was a manner to sum up my identity. Svn / sb / g is for Sven / Sébastien / Gutleben : the characteris-tic of a person mixed within three geo-graphic origins / scales : Denmark / France / Alsace. The number 3 is by the way quite interesting, as long as it is the number related to stability, to balance. These initials take place on three fac-es of a cube, a simple volume. But these three faces hide a more complex identity inspired by several fields, which feed the architectural reflexion that char-acterises me. The whole is supplied with a few cups of coffee.
