This handy, schematic map or the

Delhi metro lines was a sug gesteddesign solution to tackle tourist infux

during the Commonwealth Games

in Delhi, 2010. The design is based

on extensive user research and data

analysis so as to determine the ap-

propriate order and arrangement o

inormation on the map.

This map was designed or the

navigating stage o a user’s public

transport use. The map is a represen-

tation o the Delhi metro routes along

with its 137 stations (some o which

were under construction during this

project), various tourist sites and

Commonwealth games sites.

This project was part o the workdone or revising the Indian Road

Congress’ Road sig n manual, IR C67.

The manual, not updated since 1967,

had several discrepancies. The picto-

grams, especially, were blatant copies

o the ones used in UK road signs.

The suggested pictograms or the

artwork which were to be used in the

cautionary, inormatory and manda-

tory road signs were tweaked and

redrawn to make them distinct andclean while conveying the inorma-

tion with ease. The typographic

layouts, typeace specications and

colours were also standardized. The

nal revised version, IRC67:2010 was

published in late 2010.

As an extension o the classroom pro-

jects we did in our second semester,

me and my batchmates were given

a chance to be part o a workshop

jointly organized by the National

Institute o Design, India and Institute

or Inormation Design, Japan in To-

kyo, Japan in July, 2008. This systems

thinking based workshop was an

exercise in observing and analysing

a oreign culture in the constrained

context o interactions using publicspaces, local trade centres and sto-

rytelling. This group project resulted

in several service based products to

induce spontaneous and engaging

communication in public spaces.

This easily accessible mobile applica-

tion was designed to help users navi-

gate through a city using only public

transport. The easy interactions made

usable inormation readily available

on a popular medium.

The interaction o the application

was a simple three step process

wherein the user has to put in his

current location and destination, optto view a roadmap in case he is plan-

ning to navigate in his own vehicle

or a Transmap, which is the same

route shown as accessible by public

transport. The Transmap displayed

the route mapped schematically with

intermediate stops/stations, ares and

distances marked.

This web based application was

designed to provide a uniorm, usable

platorm or all kinds o inorma-

tion that one might need during the

planning stages o navigation to and/

or within a city. Simple interactions

based on inormation made available

through photographs increased its

reliability. Open orums and inputs

rom other people who have visited

the city also added to the reliability o

the inormation.

This project was an attempt at

understanding an individual’s visual

perception and the ability to absorb

inormation while in an emergency

situation. Taking the case study o an

airport’s departure lounge, a detailed

evacuation plan, complete with loca-

tions and content was developed.

This was a proposal or the Sardar

Vallabhbhai Patel International

Airport, Ahmedabad. The system was

designed on the basis o extrapolat-

ing the area’s crowd fow analysis and

time & placement study. Various de-

tails such as ont, colour, placement,

orientation and size were modied to

maximize the viability o the signage

system during emergencies.

This project ocused on the way a

user understands and uses icons.

The objective was to take the case o

a common household device, in this

case a compact digital camera, and

try and analyse its usabil ity. Various

cameras with similar unctional-ity were considered, studied and

compared with each other to nd

the signicance o each icon and

determine their communication

capability. Usuability testing methods

such as ranking tests, task analysis

and critical conusion were used to

compare the cameras. The nal goal

was to produce a set o simple, well-

executed and ecient icons.

This project was done as a case

study o three adjoining villages near

Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Using

the existing system o waste manage-

ment, a suggested model was devel-

oped which can be superimposedand implemented while retaining the

various components o the existing

system. The visual language o the

inographics were kept extremely

simple by including visuals that were

observed during the research phase,

usage o primary colours and using

photographs instead o abstract

graphics. The nal inographics and

the process was documented and

sent to the Ahmedabad Municipal

Corporation and local panchayats asa proposal.
