The 1st and 1st project located in the post-industrial environments of the former Jeune Lune Theatre in Minneapolis. The new program is constrained only by the need to preserve the existing performance space and its exibili-ty. In addition, the main facade cannot be touched for preservation.

The building was a warehouse, which is dark, deep and complicated as a maze. During the research, I found that when the light comes into the dim building, the visual experience is wonderful. Thus, I would like to design a visual art school, welcoming people to experience the interaction between dierent light conditions and the old building (materials, structures and furnishings), inspiring them to create visual arts.

The vidual art school includes sculture studio, painting studio, photography studio, ceremic studio, oces and exhibition hall. Thinking about how to invite light and how could the light inspire people in various spaces, I divide the building into light , soft, dim and dark. Then I open the roof in couple of places and bring light into it in numerous ways, inserting new materials to emphasis the interactions.

This project located next to St.Antheny Avenue and Fry Street in St. Paul. 3 people in a group worked for 3 dierent clients who will live together in the site. The site should be designed by group coorperation, and every single buildings is designed seperately.

My client is Saymookda Scott, who is a modern writer and poet. She loves pure and owing spaces with no structure exposed. She need a nice, quiet and bright working place with blank walls where she could write on, a large public space combining with the living room and the kitchen, and a bedroom she does not take seriously. She prefers founctional furnishings with less decoration.

After an interview with my client, the idea of “Oreo Cookies” came out. I would like to design a live+work building with 3 groups of spaces which are keeping purety but carrying dierent characters. Those spaces are founc-tional organized and convenient for my client. Just like an oreo cookie. My goal is not only meet my client’s need, but also provide unexpected interest-ing spaces for her beautiful life.

Thinking about a good neighorhood, we would like to provide a shared courtyard for these 3 clients. Having a communicated space, our clients own their private outside spaces as well. We let the buildings shape the courtyard and make the courtyard shapes those houses in return.

Far away from the main street, Saymookda’s house needs an unique entrance to welcome friends, keep private, and manifest the charac-ters of the house.

Project Key Plan

The whole site is located in the downtown east, Minneapolis. Our task is build up a group of high-rise residential community in the eld without touching the original buildings. The urban design is based on the group discussion. Then each one of us get one section of the site by lottery. Everyone should choose an architect and an artist, and then act as the architect and work for the artist. On our own site, each needs to design a high-rise building for 130 units, considering the neighbors, the blocks, the site, and the city.

I choose Louis Kahn and Picasso, and pick a quote from Kahn as my concept. “Between Silence and Light”, which means space is shaped by shadows rather than closing a room door. To do this, I should think about the relation between transparency and opacity, letting the light create the feeling of space.

At the cross of the 10th ST and the Park Ave, in the southwest corner, facing the central green park, where lays my site. There are two old building standing around. One is a funeral in the south, another is a lawyer oce to the east. Facing the green space, I continue the street-side facade, leaving an entrance from the Park Ave and an open for the funeral building. In order to extend the green space into the site, I create several courtyard between the lower building and a central tower, which with a sculpture garden at the bottom of it. Working together with my neighbor, I create a square in the center of the our block. Thus, the public spaces has been lined up.

Inspiration is the feeling of behinning at the threshold where Silence and Light meet. Silence, The unmeasurable, desire to be, desire to express, the source of new need, meets light, the measurable, giver of all presence, by will, be law, the measure of things already made, at a threshold which is inspira-tion, the sancturay of art, the Treasurt of Shadow.

The bedroom, in the UnitC. Skylight comes from the roof.

A share courtyard is at the west side of the building, giving a communiate space at the back side of the old oce. People could walk through the sculpture garden under the tower to the Park Ave.

There is an oce supply store and a gallery on the rst and second oor. The third oor contains a tness center and a small sculpture school for children. From to third to the top, there are residential units for nuclear family. There are several sky gardens and roof gardens in the building , providing spaces for communication and activities.

The order is not a way to solute problems, but the realization of nature. Think about what the city wants to be, what the streets want to be,what the building wants to be. Then let the street formthe inner and outer spaces, and let the spaces form the entire building.

Thre main entrance from the Park Ave. People could easily get into the gallery, the store and the tower from here. The material is red brick, which is cooperating the atmoaphere of the old building around.

The gallery is the plcae where the concept has been conveyed most. Light could come from the top, bottom, front , back , left, and right. Reacting with the shape of the space and the possition of walls, the lights and shadows provide a serie of intriging spaces.
