Concept and Propose

Dissolving City: dissolve the city by splitting and reforming each functional space eg: landscape used to be designed in a big open area are now divided in to relatively small space and placed separately in streets.

Sharing Space: Highlight the public participation: every citizen can share the responsibilities and benefits of constructing the city by sharing part of their private land to public space. Meanwhile different communal spaces will stimulate various social activities and adjust local’s colorful lifestyle, hopefully forming a network to wake up the whole city.

We propose placing some strategies in current old town in order to activate the city by adding changeable function in buildings

We propose a progressive transformation of housing by promoting typological diversity: entertainment space, market space, exhibition space, working space, etc.

The Transformation of Zhang-Village & The Design of Community CentreThe Transformation of Zhang-Village & The Design of Community Centre

Phase A: Overall Conditions

Phase B: Zhang-Village Site Analysis

This is a community centre design project, named Zhang-Village, which is located in Wuhan Huangpi district, China. Unlike Wuhan city centre, Zhang-Village is surrounded by plenty of water and rich soil resource. Under the good natural conditions, it is suitable for agricultural utilization, which is kept as an important agricultural base, food producing base and popular science education base.

Phase C: Seeking Problems

Survey and Interview: Site Conditions:

Main Problems: No communications between two Villages / Terrible living environment / Play cards as daily life without jobs / Low education level

Main Reasons: It is far from the Wuhan city centre / Imbalanced Agricultural development level / Villagers have no farming incomes /Wastelands cannot be reused / Inorganic fertilizers are harmful for soil and with low utilization /Imperfect infrastructures (without sewage treatment system) / Young people prefer temporary jobs in towns and cities / Lack of young labour / Unhealthy psychological and physical conditions accompany the old and children / Lacking city vigour and creativity / Information sluggishness / Blind economic profits

Zen concept is philosophical thought emphasizes the expression of rich connotation in the limited space. Using hearts, not eyes, can make restriction become infinite, which could be utilized in pocket tower designing in HongKong. Zen Tower reveals the profound enjoyment of space in the vertical dense tall building. Due to diverse perspectives, the comprehension will be in the different depth.

A handshake, a warm and close contact.

Like hot water in a bottle, warmth bring comfort to

both hands and heart.

Touch, the colosest motion that elders take to contact with the world.

When columns become thin enough for elders to hold with only one hand, warm enough to transmit warmth to people, they are connecting elders and the building itself.

When an elder suddenly holds a column hearby, he/she feels the warmth from the building. Thus, communication is created between man and architecture.

In the old district, many elderly people are of no family, living a lonely life. The apartments are private rooms, and elderly people usually relax and communicate with each other in the space betwen the buildings. We design a elderly home to let old people to live together. The design is based on space in old district. Warm and thin columns are placed in the public space between the buildings, providing a comfortable space for relaxation and communication.

According to the comprehension of surrounding, We try to keep the traditional architectural form and order.

Following one group in the site, three yellow boxes grow continually.

In order to maintain the wholeness of the street, storefronts should turn about 25°.

Using transparent boxes to combine five houses, meanwhile, we try to enhance the using area, public space and keep adequate sun shine.

Leaning Against the Courtyards I Rural House Design Leaning Against the Courtyards I Rural House Design

This is a rural house design project, which is not limited in a specific site, in Hubei Province. The area of this site is only about 120 square meters(12m×10m or 15 m×8m).However, Li-fen residential building, which is the main type of dwellings in modern Wuhan, influences the development of Hubei traditional residential buildings. We do some research on several aspects of plan-layout, construction, decoration, detail design and dwelling form. Consequently, the protection and renovation of modern historical areas and development of modern residence design with local feature of Wuhan should not be ignored.

Leaning Against the Courtyards I Rural House Design Leaning Against the Courtyards I Rural House Design

According to the solar elevation in Wuhan region (the latitude of wuhan is 31°, solar elevation is 83°in summer solstice/ solar elevation is 34°in winter solstice ), we design the shutter angle.

Horizontal sunshade is suitable for South facade, on the other hand, vertical sunshade suits West & East facades. Using the“push-pull type”sunshade components will enrich facade effect.

The holes on the shutters are used for hanging bacon & cured fish and airing clothes.

Foreword:An American scholar Olgyay suggested a concept—'adjustable sunshade' in 1960s. The simplest sun visors will become high-efficent solar radiators as long as adding some elaborative design, which means sheltering from sunshine in summer and indraughting sunshine in winter. That’s the reason why we focus on the sunshade.

The topic of this design is rural house in Wuhan region. Not only should we focus on climate adaptability, but we also pay more attention on material availability, economy rationality, usefulness and aesthetics.

All in all, we choose alloy shutter sunshade. In order to adapt the different orientations, we design two kinds of sunshade components and combine sunshade with airing.

[1] 'Liu Garden'---Ownership passed to Liu Su, another official in 1798 CE. The garden soon acquired the nickname 'Liu Yuan' from the owner's surname. The meaning of the name is 'long lasting between heaven and earth'. Liu Su really loves Calligraphy and Painting.[2] The garden comprises of four sections; its middle section,'Hanbi Mountain Villa', was the quintessential part. The layout of this section was based on mountains and ponds. It was surrounded by mountains, rocks, buildings and pavilions, and had many long corridors and bridges penetrating its landscape.[3] 'Abra is deep and spacious; Stream is winding and zigzag; Clean cold colour of bamboo; Limpid green light of water.'[4] Lingering Garden is famous for its man-made mountains and rocks.[5] 'Bright and Clean Tower'means bright wood and clean water. The mountains made mainly of yellowstones and earth, believed to be designed and piled up by Zhou Binzhong, which look very much archaic and splendiferous.[6] 'Hanbi Mountain Villa', the main buildings in the middle part of the garden, commonly called 'Lotus Hall', is surrounded by exuberant trees, wind pavilions and moon sheds.[7] 'Celestial Hall of Five Peaks'is also called 'Nanmu Hall'which is decorated floridly with graceful furnishings.[8] 'Wen-Mu-Xi-Xiang Pavilion'is the toppest position in the middle. There is an idyllic scene with cool breeze.[9] Flanked by the Auspicious Cloud and Mountainous Cloud peaks, the 6.5-metre-high Cloud-Capped Peak, the highest limestone in the classical gardens of Suzhou, is believed to be left behind by the imperial collector of the Northern Song Dynasty. The texture crosses freely and the form is strange & brave.[10]'Bright and Clean Tower'and'Hanbi Mountain Villa'were built on the land near the central pond, looking like Gaily-painted pleasure-boat.

The layout of this section was based on mountains and ponds . It was surrounded by mountains , ricks , buildings and pavilions , and had many long corridors and bridges penetrating its landscape .

The eastern section had many magnificent and spacious halls , pavilions and corridors ; it also had large and small rockeries.

The western section was based on large rockeries ; it gave a rough feeling , and it had mountains clad with maple trees .

The northern section had a view of nature mountain villages , using a bamboo picked fence enclosing a small garden of miniature trees with many famous species .
