ONSEN POOLS ON THE SPA LEVEL
Situated on a busy street corner, the hotel offers a spa experience like none other. Clients are whisked off to an Icelandic retreat surrounded by the serene atmosphere of Japanese-inspired architecture. The heated pools are scattered in a faceted landscape that extends to an exterior terrace, allowing for a soothing dip even during the middle of snowy winter.RHINO, V-RAY FOR RHINO, PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR

ARCHIVE OF CANADIAN MUSIC CENTRE ARCHIVE | 122 JOHN ST, ONTHE MUSIC ARCHIVE
The Canadian Music Center Archive is located on the busy street corner of John St. and Adelaide St. in the Fashion District. The angular glass facade on the ground level provides a direct view of the archive’s interior for the busy crowds on the street. At night, the solid blank facade erupts into a kaleidescope of ditigal colours that records and visually represents the sounds of passerby. An outdoor performance space is hidden in the back of the building, bordered by an extension of the indoor staircase which doubles as auditorium seating.RHINO, V-RAY FOR RHINO, PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR

The botanical gardens are divided according to the energy gained from the 24 hour cycle of day and night. There is a division between plants which bloom at daybreak and those which open at sundown. In addition, there is the separation of the day/night pleasure gardens from the secluded reed grasses which generate electrical energy for the building.RHINO, V-RAY FOR RHINO, PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR, AUTOCAD

VERTICAL CEMETERY | YOKOHAMA, JAPANTHE EIEN TOWER
EXTERIOR VIEW FROM THE WATER
The Eien Tower is a vertical cemetery conceived as a solution to the decreasing number of available cemetery plots in Japan. In addition to housing cremated remains, the “grave apart-ment” (ohaka nomanshon) also provides fresh water and park space for the city. People are encouraged to pay respects to their ancestors in a serene environment and linger in the rooftop garden with a view of the ocean and the sky.RHINO, V-RAY FOR RHINO, PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR, AUTOCADENTRY FOR CTBUH 2011 COMPETION IN COLLABORATION WITH EMILY GUO, HAYLIE CHAN, AND RONALD TANG.

A rainwater collection system is integrated into the structural membrane of the building.
The exterior structure is made out of concrete-coated steel, forming a strong and flexible exoskeleton which is braced to the interior columns. The concrete-coated steel members allows for the placement of movement joints which helps keep the building balanced and intact during earthquakes. Perforated panels are placed between the steel members to reinforce the structure while still providing a view.
The building uses a double facade system that allows air to circulate freely through the building. The interior is heavily vegetated. Not only do the plants serve to soften the space, but they also convert carbon dioxide to oxygen.
A rooftop garden provides a place of repose for visitors.
One of the by-products of desalination is calcium chloride, a salt which can be added to water to create a desiccant waterfall system that absorbs water from the air and dehumidifies the space. This liquid desiccant system can be easily regenerated by evaporating the water and concentrating the salts, resulting in a passive cooling system that drastically reduces energy use in the building. The rest of the fresh water produced is sent to the city.

OBSERVATORY FOR THE NEW YORK AQUARIUM | BROOKLYN, NEW YORKTHE STINGRAY OBSERVATORY
The Stingray Observatory is an extension of the New York Aquarium for a view of Brooklyn’s local sea life. The building’s name refers to its mimicry of the stingray’s physique and elegant movement in the shallow waters. The stingray’s barbed tail is represented by the sweeping entrance way leading from the grassy dock to the underground observatory - a beautiful connection between land and sea. The Stingray Observatory reinvents the oldest operating aquarium in the world to properly represent the vibrance of the city.RHINO, V-RAY FOR RHINO, PHOTOSHOPENTRY FOR 10th ANNUAL SSEF COMPETITION IN COLLABORATION WITH HAYLIE CHAN.
