At Gensler Chicago, I had the opportunity to work on a global headquarters for Johnson Controls Inc. The 35,000 square meter, approximately 370,000 square feet, building is located in Shanghai, China and anticipated to be finished in the beginning of 2017. The main concept of the project was build a showcase rather than an office building. The entire space would feature Johnson Controls’ technology and products. The headquarters will house multiple businesses in one building, a new innovative experience for Johnson Controls employees and businesses.

Four business will share certain collaborative spaces such as the innovation center and the learning and multipurpose rooms. Larger collaborative spaces are located on the second floor creating one widely accessible collective of team-working spaces for all four businesses.
The entire third and fourth floors are dedicated to typical workplace. Through the use of spaces of work, collaboration, and rest, neighborhoods are formed. Together, these neighborhoods form the work floors.I worked with my coworkers to create an effective layout of spaces that met the desired ratios of collaboration to work seats.

One studio at DAAP focused on the creation and development of a library over the course of an entire semester. We began with the study of posture and how people use space when they read. I took the idea of having a space that is used in many different ways as the beginning of my thought process. From there I worked towards the concept of having solid masses penetrated by free-formed vertical extrusions. These extrusions create unique spaces that facilitate the program of a library.
CREATING A LIBRARY

The exercise of designing a library began by studying posture. Through collage, I reflected on how I like to read and in what environment. The environment I tend to read in is my bed. Such a space allows for many positions and postures while reading. From there I studied how a large free formed object can act as reading space. This sculptural piece would be able to accommodate all shapes, sizes, and positions.

Through posture and promenade studies, I came to how my final model will look. The library will be composed as a large, heavy, massive object with light flexible and transformative vertical elements piercing through the solid floor plates. This would create a membranous building that would selectively allow passage of light, people, sound, along with other effects from one space to another.

For my first co-op opportunity, I worked for Collective Architecture, small firm with 12 designers located in Washington, DC. They specialize in corporate, retail, and restaurant interior architecture, brand design, and consulting. During my time at Collective, I aided with a number of interior renovations through space plans and finish selection of speculative suites. I mostly worked on technical aspects of small corporate projects. The following project is a renovation of the Baker & Miller office on Pennsylvania Avenue. I drafted details, elevations, and floor plans, and rendered elevations and plans for client review.

To help learn about spaces and transitions, we used buildings on campus as case studies. Working with a group, Van Wormer Hall was experienced, investigated, and later documented. Though the building is the oldest on campus, it was renovated in 2006. What used to be a library is now administrative offices. This space is unique in the sense of having been repurposed and therefore gives the interiors a distinct feeling. The entrance is tall and grand but the vestibule creates a small compressed space that then opens to the core of the building.

The first year in the School of Architecture and Interior Design was spent learning and understanding space and how to define space in a new way. Those two semesters introduced group projects and challenged me to think differently. A few exercises from this first year are shown ranging in scale from six inch by six inch cubes to six foot by six foot cubes.
