Public Schools and City CentreVado Ligure, SV, Italyyear: 2013 - in progressclient: Government of the city of Vado Liguretype: International Competition for a Public Schools and City Centreactivities: Concept, Idea, Preliminary Draftproject leader: Federigo Luzzicollaborator: Roberta Parisize: 9.000 m²budget: 16.791.937 €
http://www.comeonarchitects.com/index.php

Gabicce Mare is a small coastal city on the Adriatic sea that relies
completely on the tourists influx during the summer season. Du-
ring the roaring years of great
touristic development, specially in the ‘70s, the settlement has grown unplanned and chaotic
according to the individual lon-
ging of the local owners, who, out of the blue, found themselves Hotel managers. This resulted in an extremely dense fabric and in
an objective difficulty to feel the sea from within the city.
On the other hand the locality
is placed in an exceptional spot
along the Adriatic coast, as the San Bartolo hill, a natural reser-voir, breaks the monotonous, flat, sandy landscape of the well known beaches of the Emilia Romagna region. Given the be-
autiful natural setting and the
numerous touristic facilities, the proposal focused on restoring
the lost balance between nature
and urbanity in order to achieve a
coherent ecosystem.
The urban strategy focuses on a
suturing approach. Five trasversal
squares are identified and enhan-
ced in the existing fabric: trough small demolitions, surface trea-
tements and levels adjustemnt
these places creates iconic voids
amid the too dense buildings
and reconnect the rear city to the
sea, both visually and physically.
The squares are perpendicularly
tied by the new waterfront. This
promenade extends the mediter-
ranean landscape of San Bortolo right trough the city, and gently creates an hybrid space of transi-
tion between the tall hotels and
the soft beach. The swimming
facilities as well as bars and re-
staurant become integral part of
the system as they facilitate the
access to the beach and merge
into the natural environment.

Detroit’s population has dropped by less than half in the past 40 years, the city has been the stage for vio-
lent racial struggles and fights. Nev-
ertheless it has always been one of
the most fertile grounds for the arts
in the USA, popular for freedom of expression and cultural actions. It’s usually referred to as “the Motor City” as in its territory are based the three
major car manifacturers of the coun-
try, and it used to be the birth place of the most important innovation
in the field of motorized transport - here was the world’s first asphalt road implemented. As an endless in-
dustrial crisis shoke Detroit’s factories in recent times, president Obama allocated a 2,4 $ billions investment to renovate the production towards
electric cars.
In the current shrinkage of econom-
ical and social means, the infrastruc-
ture turns out to be an overdimen-
sioned element of the city, and thus rich in opportunities. In the average american urban practice the infra-
structure, actually the only public owned space, is optimized in order to achieve the best speed and flu-
idity for the goods to circulate. In the other hand, as an impenetrable barrier, it puts away the urban blocks from each other. Anyway, is right there, along the roads, that Amer-icans spend their days and partic-
ipate to the social life. The project
aims to imagine the infrastructure
not anymore as a mere engineered
space, but rather as a typical Ameri-can social place. Thanks to the great potential of Detroi’s industries and to vastness of its territory, the coming of electrical cars seems to be a huge
opportunity to transform the met-
ropolitan experience. To identify a
strong infrastructural mark in the ho-
mogeneus, boring urban landscape, grants a framework to develop new social places in the age of the diffuse
metropolis.
Detroit will be a city anyway if it main-
tains its back-bone in which the real urban life takes place: a Perimeter of Urbanity will garrison a wild territory and the Infrastructure will turn into the object of the city itself instead of
a mere commodity.
