WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO BEFORE YOU DIE?

Posted on Monday, May 14th, 2012 by Natalia Farbiarz

What do you want to do before you die? This website – ‘Before I Die I Want To’ collects the wishes people share on a polaroid: the things I want to do before I die. It’s poignant, emotional and one of the more interesting websites we’ve seen this year!

Make a wish upon a… Polaroid!

Before I Die I Want To – It’s usually said that wishes are not supposed to be shared. If you wish for something when you blow out the birthday candles or see a shooting star – and tell anyone what you asked for – it won’t come true. But what about goals, challenges? They are a wish for an accomplishment… and there’s no better way to take responsibility for them than sharing. Based on the idea that “the human connection of making a promise to someone and understanding that someone cares, notices, and expects something is motivational”, this website comes up with an artistic way to achieve a lifetime goal: What do you want do before you die?

Before I Die I Want To: A poignant, artistic project by Nicole Kenney

Several factors inspired this project brought to the web by the Brooklyn-based artist Nicole Kenney, who with ‘Before I Die I Want To’ intends to explore both universal and intimate, personal themes. On the one hand, ‘Before I Die I Want To’ is particularly poignant given the recent announcement by Polaroid that they are to discontinue their productsas a result of the prevalence of digital photography. On the other, Kenney expects that by asking people, “what do you want to do before you die?”, and asking them to publicly publish their wishes online, will motivate them to actually achieve their stated life goals, by making a promise to themselves and the photographer.

What’s in it for you, reader? You can’t actually contribute to the project – it doesn’t appear to be a social wall that people can add to. But as a library of human experiences and wishes, it’s incredibly interesting to explore as a reader. Nicole asked the ‘Before I Die I Want To’ question to people from the United States, India and a hospice, so there’s a real interest in comparing the life goals and wishes of people from extremely different perspectives. From “Driving a car across the country” to “being 20 years old again”, every desire is as unique as the person who stated it. Don’t miss this chance to feel inspired by other people wishes… you’ll probably find yourself thinking about your own.

FLAPCAST: A GREAT WAY TO DISCOVER, SHARE & STREAM PODCASTS ONLINE

Posted on Monday, May 14th, 2012 by Natalia Farbiarz

Flapcast is a fast and simple way to listen to, share, organize and broadcast podcasts direct from your browser… Read on to see how it works!

Flapcast: An Easy Way To Stream & Play Podcasts Online

Flapcast – The most famous video distribution platform on the web – yes, of course I’m talking about YouTube – invites its users to broadcast themselves. As a result, it allows to billions of people to discover, watch and share originally-created videos. But being the star of an embarrassing video likely to be watched by millions of users takes a lot of courage – and a complete lack of shame. Some people prefer to share their thoughts and talents through a different artistic discipline… using the power of voice. That’s right, podcasts are a great way to share your thoughts, and with Flapcast it’s extremely easy to stream, play and share your podcasts online.

If your music lives in the Cloud, why don’t your podcasts?

There’s no doubt that iTunes is the dominant force in the Podcast world. If you listen to them, they’re probably podcasts you found in the iTunes store (and you probably just listen to them on your iPod / other portable music device). But that takes up space on your device, and there’s also so much noise in the iTunes store that it’s highly unlikely your podcast will get noticed. Flapcast is a great way to solve both problems: You can get your voice heard above the noise, and you can discover and save podcasts you like in the online Cloud (and stream them online too).

How to use Flapcast:

Log in (you don’t even need another social network account, just mail and password), go to “manage subscriptions” and start the list: You can search for podcasts by clicking on the ‘Find new podcasts’ button. Trace the things that suit your taste is easy since you can search by name, episodes or popularity, which guarantees you’ll find the podcast that fits you. Also, you can import your own podcast collection by clicking on the ‘Import podcasts’ button, either if it’s one you loved and didn’t find on the site or one you produced!

PICK A COURSE, ANY COURSE: COURSERA BRINGS TOP UNIVERSITY EDUCATION ONLINE… AND MAKES IT

FREEPosted on Monday, April 30th, 2012 by Natalia Farbiarz

Going to College or University is a huge decision: Which one is the best? Are you willing to move out from your state? And most importantly: Can you afford it? Even though I never had the American experience of studying, I can tell something about my own country, Argentina: It’s the State’s duty to provide it for all its citizens and paying is only a matter of choice. And even better, the public University is considered to be among the top ones in South America. Now imagine such privilege in the USA: having the opportunity to access the world class education so far only available to a select few, with millions of other students, without having to leave your home. ”If you will it, it is no dream” assured Theodore Herzl. I guess Coursera proves him right…

Are you serious? is it really free?

Coursera is a “social entrepreneurship company that partners with the top universities in the world to offer courses online for anyone to take, for free.” Envisioning a future where the top universities (including Ivy League colleges like Princeton and Stanford) educate millions of students, the website provides the technology to participate in a global community of students with interactive online courses, led by some of the World’s top professors: from watching high quality lectures, achieving mastery via interactive exercises, and collaborating with the global students community. Also, taking into consideration the busy life most students have, the courses are designed to help students master new concepts quickly and effectively. Besides, feedback is provided frequently to enable students to monitor their progress in mastering the material. Believe it or not, the aim behind this website is to”empower people with education that will improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities they live in.” No profits involved, just a ton of good will.

Take your time, choose between Humanities and Social Sciences, Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics, Helthcare, Medicine and Biology, Economics, Finance and Business or Society, Networks and Information… and join the class! There’s always room for another student!

THREADFLIP REVIEW: SECOND HAND FASHION SHOPPING JUST GOT EASIER

An online second hand clothes sale with real vintage style

There’s an interesting statistic that’s been floating around the All My Faves HQ this week (found by yours truly of course ): Apparently most of us wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time! But why are we wasting our old clothes, locking them away in a closet when someone else might think they have vintage style! Too much of a pain to get rid of them? Well not anymore, because Threadflip has built an online outlet mall for second hand fashion shopping and sales!

Making second hand fashion shopping & selling more reliable…

There’s always been an upside and a downside to buying vintage clothes and other style items second hand, online: the amazing prices often measure against the risk of buying low quality items. Threadflip solves this by bringing you ”What’s Hot” at the best deal! Whether in its intuitive shopping or excellent selling section, Threadflip makes it just so simple to trade second hand fashion and vintage clothing items.

In the shopping section, after you complete a little survey about your size, your favorite colors and brands and most importantly, your personal style, the main page always displays the best fits for you in terms of all your choices. And the selling section is, in this reviewer’s opinion, even better: you simply post any item you don’t want yourself, or take advantage of “The White Glove Service”, which allows you to send your unwanted items to Threadflip to photograph in a pre-paid box that arrives at your door when you ask for it… and they sell your fashion items and gently worn clothes for you. Win win!

Until now, there’s never been a fashion shopping website that made it so simple to sell second hand clothes, and at the same time buy from others the little, unwanted jewels with vintage style hidden in their closets… So instead of imagining cashing 80% of the money your unwanted clothes are worth and being able to spend it on the 20% you actually need, just click here to try out Threadflip!

WISHWISHWISH – BLOG OF THE WEEK: A LOVE LETTER TO LONDON VINTAGE

FASHION

We all know the expression, “a picture paints a thousand words”. Well in Spanish (I’m Argentinian by the way!) the expression goes: “a picture says more than a thousand words”, and having explored this week’s most fashionable Weekly Fave, WishWishWish, it would appear that its author Carrie has nailed the idea!

WishWishWish is a blog by a student in London that has a simple aim: “inspiring somebody in some way”.

And the student in question, Carrie does this by posting beautiful pictures daily in categories such as Art and Craft, Clothing and Accesories, Giveaways, Hair and Beauty, Shopping, Trips and Travel, among many others. The site also contains her and her readers’ personal musings, whimsical encounters in the UK’s capital city, and opinions on things that matter to them, whether that be fashion, style, design, people and places. Each post is made of several pics and a cute story about how the situation in which she took them.Click here to enjoy the work of this great designer and photographer!

CHILD’S OWN STUDIO: A WONDERFUL EXPRESSION OF CHILDHOOD!

Child’s Own Studio – Let’s play a little game. Close your eyes. Concentrate. Keep them closed. Now try to remember your first drawing as a child. You were probably four or five years old. Do you remember? Yes, it’s really hard. Now, what would have happened if your drawings actually came alive?

Child’s Own Studio is an exciting and original new concept in celebrating children’s art and imagination. It started with the idea of making a recognizable soft toy for a 4 year old boy based on his drawings and became a home-based launched business. The artist custom makes the stuffed toy as accurate as possible in terms of details and color choices: “The child’s drawing is the starting point of the collaborative project.” The objective is to reproduce it as accurately as possible so that it is immediately recognizable. And the amazement of the results is undeniable. Every toy is as unique as the child who pictured it.

Only one last warning: Be patient! Due to the big waiting list the artist is currently not accepting any new orders but you can still visit the other softie-makers recommended by the site. Get ready for the fun and rewarding process of creating a “keepsake to be cherished for a lifetime”.
