Summary of Activities

The YMCA is a local non-profit organization that aims to strengthen the community. One

reason why the YMCA is great is because of its three areas of focus. They focus on: youth

development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The YMCA offers an extensive amount of

programs however the one that I was involved in was their School Age Child Care also known as

“Surround Care”. I was lucky enough to work at two of their Child Care sites. One was at

Emerson Elementary School and the other at Irving Pertzsch Elementary in Onalaska. The two

schools were slightly different in terms of the different types of kids and the environment in

which I worked in. The kids at Irving Pertzsch are slightly easier to work with however the kids

at Emerson are well behaved and like activities that are hands on. While teaching at these two

sites I got to perform my activities to the younger kids (kindergarten through second grade) and

the older kids (third grade through fifth grade). Working with this population is challenging but

it was worthwhile. My first week at both sites I observed. The following week I performed my

activities that I had planned. The types of activities for the first couple of weeks were ones on

paper or hands on type. The first activity at both sites that I did was called: grocery shopping

bingo. For this, every kid had the same bingo sheets with different fruits, vegetables, meats,

and grains on it. I made copies of the bingo sheets and cut out all the squares of all the foods.

In their lunchrooms, I spread out all the squares on the floor. When I said go, the kids had to

pick up a square and whatever food they had, they had to put it on their bingo sheet to the

corresponding one. Everyone was a winner. Another activity that the kids liked that went well

was a guessing game. Kids were paired up and there partner had a notecard with a healthy

food on it. This notecard was then clothe pinned on their back. The person with it on their back

had to try and guess what it was. By guessing it, they had to ask questions. The type of

questions they asked were ones like: is it a fruit? Is it a vegetable? Is it round? Does it grow on a

tree? The kids asked very good questions. A last activity that went well was a drawing one.

This was called: Pictionary. The kids were divided into teams of four. Each kid had a card with a

healthy food on it. Their job was to draw it and have the other kids guess what it was.

Everyone got a turn to draw. Their creativity here was brilliant. A last type of activity that I

performed at both sites involved being active. I incorporated this type of activity because it’s

also important for the kids to stay active on top of eating healthy. One activity that the kids

participated in was called “Go food, slow food” also known as Red Light/ Green Light. For this I

asked the kids what kinds of food make you “go”. They had great responses. They said foods

like: strawberries, blueberries, carrots, chicken and lots of other healthy foods. These foods

help us grow and be strong! In contrary, I asked them what kinds of food make you “slow”.

They said things like pizza, fried chicken, french fries, cupcakes, soda, and candy. I asked them

why they named these. Some of the kids said they have lots of sugar & salt. Eating these foods

on a regular basis makes us fat and slow.

I worked closely with the supervisors and group leaders at both sites. At Emerson, the

site supervisor was Zack and at Irving Pertzsch it was Heather. They made me feel comfortable

when I performed my activities with the kids. It was especially helpful when they have four

group leaders at both sites. At times it was difficult to try and keep the kids attention because

as we all know, kids attention spans aren’t the greatest. Overall from this experience, it was

such an honor to teach the kids about nutrition and healthy eating because it is important to

teach them while they’re young in addition in trying to make healthy eating a habit.

Projects Completed

Guessing fruit & vegetable with clothespin

Description:

Objective: This activity was aimed in trying to have the kids be more aware of the different

types of fruits and vegetables.

The kids were partnered up and one of them was given a

notecard. On the back was written a different type of

fruit or vegetable. One partner was pinned with the

notecard on their back. The kid with the notecard on

their back had to try and guess what it was. How they

had to guess were by asking their partner questions. The

partner without the notecard got a chance to look at it.

To get a better idea of what the food was, there was a picture on the back of the notecard. The

types of questions that were asked consisted of: is it a fruit? Is it a vegetable? Does it grow on a

tree? Can you bake with it? Am I red? Once the person guessed it right it was the other persons

turn and they were given a notecard. The kids especially loved this game because it got them

moving and thinking about all the fruits and vegetables out there.

Some of the fruits and vegetables that were one the cards were:

apple, banana, mango, pear, strawberry, blueberry, green

pepper, potato, tomato, mushroom, celery, squash, cucumber,

broccoli, and spinach.

Grocery Store Bingo

Description:

Objective: This activity was aimed at having the kids familiarize themselves with the five food

groups and having an understanding of the different foods found in them.

To start out this activity I asked the kids if they go with their parents grocery shopping. Most of

them said yes because they somewhat have an input of what they want to eat. Following their

responses I asked them what kinds of foods they like to get from the grocery store and what

foods you can find at your local grocery store. Some of

the responses I got about what they like to get from the

store include: strawberries, blueberries, oatmeal,

carrots, and milk. Some of the foods that can be found

at the grocery store that were said included: peanut

butter, jelly, whole wheat bread, fish, pasta, grapes,

tomato, ice cream, cereal, and meats. After the

introduction to the activity, we started the activity. Each

kid got their own and same bingo sheet as everyone

else. Beforehand I had made copies of the bingo sheets and cut out all the foods from the

bingo sheet into little squares. I then bagged them up into little bags. Proceeding this all the

cut out squares of the foods I spread out all over their cafeteria floor. On the top of the bingo

Page 10: Portfolio

sheets it had all the five food groups with five different foods underneath each. When I said go

each kid had to go pick up a square off the floor and whatever food it was they had to put it on

their bingo sheet to the matching food. They could only pick up one at a time. Once they had

five in a row or diagonally, they had bingo. As soon as they got bingo I came over and asked

them what each food was and under which food group it was in. In the end, everyone was a

winner. I say this because there was an incentive once they had won. They each got a silly

band as a prize.

Personal Reflection

Restatement of goals:

- Be able to teach and educate elementary school kids about nutrition at two different schools.

- Create and carry out a lesson plan for at least 15 minutes.- Log 6 hours at both sites by the end of the week.- Carry out a lesson plan aimed at different age groups.- Get kids involved in various lesson plans.- Introduce various kinds of foods unfamiliar to elementary kids.- Log at least 90 hours total by the end of the nutrition field experience.

The above goals were very broad and general. They also should have been more thoughtful

and SMART. At first, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to teach and achieve with this

experience but I knew that I wanted to educate the elementary kids about nutrition as a whole.

The approach I took at both sites were relatively the same. This was because they were both

run the same way and had similar schedules. The kids would get out of school followed by

checking in and giving their name tags to the group leaders. They would then wash hands for

snack and then afterwards I would have the older kids first to do my activity followed by the

younger kids. When I first observed at the two sites I kind of got a better idea of how things

worked and what some of my activities I might be doing. One of my goals was to get the kids

involved. This goal was assessed by the percentage of kids that participated in my activity. At

both sites I would say roughly that between 80-95% of the kids actively participated in my

activity. The ones that didn’t participate was because they weren’t interested and I could not

force a kid to do my activity. Another goal that I had was to introduce various kinds of food to

the kids. How I think I achieved this goal is by over the course of the semester and through all

Page 12: Portfolio

Trevor Little 12

the different kinds of activities I had the kids partake in. The kids had general knowledge of

most of the fruits and vegetables out there. However, there were some fruits and vegetables

that the kids didn’t know. For instance, grapefruit was one fruit they didn’t know and for

vegetables, some of them didn’t know what asparagus was or eggplant. One activity that I did

to help them gain more knowledge of all the different fruits and vegetables out there was by

playing “eat the rainbow”. Whatever color they were wearing on their shirts, I had all the kids

wearing orange come into the circle. We then tried to come up with all the different colored

fruits and vegetables out there. Overall I would say I achieved most of my goals. One highlight

that I had with this experience was every time I would come in they would give me great big

hugs and say “hi Mr. Trevor!” On the other hand, there were some challenges that I was faced

with. I learned that it is very hard to work with elementary kids and that being patient is very

key. It was also challenging in trying to think of different activities that would work well for the

younger kids but also work for the older kids. It was also hard at Emerson to try and keep the

younger kids attention for more than five minutes. At times, some kids weren’t listening or

they were goofing off. So it was important to try and think of an activity that kept the younger

kids moving! In the end I learned that I still love working with the younger population because I

think it’s important nowadays to teach them about nutrition at an early age. I will continue

learning and being involved in nutrition in whatever way I possibly can. Overall, this nutrition

field experience has been such a blast and I have gained valuable skills that I can use in my

future.
